Babylon A.D. based of the book Babylon baby?! Is about as odd as they come.
*Spoiler alert*
The movie starts out when our hero, soon gets attacked by a baby Killer (and they mention this (baby killing) so much you leave the scene with the word echoing in your head so loud that you almost miss the next part of the plot [perhaps they where afraid that you would get confused about who the hero is]). This after killing this very evil dude he goes with the evil dude's friends to find out they are working for a different evil dude. Don't ask me where all these dudes are coming from, dude. I have no Idea how my mind works. Anyway the man (other evil dude that is) wants him to pick up a girl at a church and deliver her to America no matter what (Neither rain or Sleet, or crazy people hired by her crazy dad.)
The plot did not make sense, the church that the girl came from was really a way to prove that the girl was a virgin (since it was a all women church.) because her father made her for the religious people as a women who would give birth even without a man, as a miracle of their god (what a original idea). Never mind the fact that the doctor could have easily impregnated her. The cool thing in this movie was a few inventions, like the electronic map and the lie-detecting gun. |

Pretty good action/spy movie that keeps you guessing throughout the whole movie. Don Cheadle is very good as the American spy. Overall it's a good entertaining popcorn flick that will keep you on the edge of your seat. |

It's pretty good for the first two acts, though I wish they were a bit more engaging. The third act is even better, with some good twists, including the last one, which was great, even though now that I think about it, I'm not entirely sure how it's supposed to work, logicwise. |

Definitely one of the worst movies of the year. The ending has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the film.

An interesting little SciFi thrillerthat ws entertaining, with inconsistent and inconsequential details (Thoorop's left leg is artificial, yet we see skin on the same leg about 5 minutes later, why artificial?) and an ending that leaves more questions, and zero answers. |

What a disappointment, to say the least..
I have nothing against Vin Diesel. But Hollywood should already realize by now that the guy just can not act.
As for the movie, it was shot poorly, had awful cinematography, progressed awkwardly from start to finish, had little or no story structure and had unbelievably vague story background for what miniscule story "meat" it had.
As for the actors, all of them were painfully miss cast and had absolutely no chemistry with one another at all.
And what's worst, the ending of this movie was THE WORST I've seen in a long time.
Don't even bother wasting your money on this one.
But on a personal note, I did love Melanie Thienny on screen who played the lead female role, Aurora. Aside from being absolutely beautiful and arresting in the big screen, she gave a good enough performance for a fledgling actress and exuded engaging stage presence.
I pray that this awful movie doesn't mar her chance on making it big in the movie industry. |

It was decent filmwork. Gripping Imagery. Cool visuals. State of the Art Special Effects & CGI. Kind of a generic plot as it unfolded. Not really th direction I was thinking. An anti-hero who gets caught up in a unique special assignment that only he is a badass enough to complete. yadayadayada....
I was kind of looking for a bigger picture. I'm not mad tho. |

I enjoyed it, for what it was. it wrapped a bit quick and some (lots) things were left kinda like "huh?". I didn't mind spending the money (on the water, cause I had a get in free ticket). and it's nice to see Vin on the big screen again. fight scenes were way too close focused on, could barely understand what was happening. come on, we all know Vin & Michelle can fight...lets see it. |

I was enjoying it for the action, not expecting too much plot. But then the last five minutes came out of nowhere, left half a dozen hanging plot points, and made no sense when compared with the rest of the film. Story felt unfinished, like they ran out of budget. |

I was told to avoid this, but it was free so what the hell. With all the controversy with the director and the studios i wanted to see what the problem was. There were problems oh so many.
So many problems that i'm finding it difficult to fathom it all and write them down. The film has been compared to Children of Men so i may aswell compare it aswell. It had a similar plotline, however Children of Men actually had some story structure. In Children of Men you see the problem, the society, basically the situation. Then you saw the solution, well the base for the film, the journey as it were.
Babylon AD was pretty much the same, guy told to transport girl, weird situation. However it was never ever told what the hell was with the girl, what was at stake, not even the date. It was so convoluted with rubbish that it made absolutely no sense.
Here's one example. About 75 minutes into the film it goes to New York and someone says something about religion and i went "What? Since when was this film about religion?!" It was THAT bad.
Here's another reason (i almost forgot this im the mist of awfulness), Melanie Thierry is horrid. It doesn't help that we have no idea what makes her so special, and even in the end it makes no sense what she is or anything. But her character, even though she's meant to be all holy and good, she just ends up being whiny and annoying. Really not good.
Enough of the ranting, although it was so so bad, there were some positives. The editing and the stunts were very good and visually the film was nicely shot, good locations, good action sequences.
Vin Diesel aswell, although it wasn't a great performance, it was solid. I like Vin Diesel as an actor. He's not brilliant but he knows that. He's found what he's good at and he sticks to it. Basically Richard B Riddick, who is of course awesome.
So yeah, totally avoid this film. It was no sense what so ever. |

imagine if you will that you are vin diedel. you have three hits that firmly place you in the top drawer of action movies. you have the looks, you have have the moves and you have the voice.
the world is you oyster.
and then ooops.
babylon AD is vin's stab at action hero redemption. it was close but no cigar.
it is the near future russia and china are backward messes. all grim despair and destitution - yet everyone has clean clothes.
new york is gleaming bright lights and fast cars. so not much of a propaganda thing there.
the confused story treads the same sort of ground that "children of men" did, but clive owen acted a little more than vin does.
there are some potential exciting action scene, but the editing is so heavy handed that they are not all that good.
and the rather poor free running moment is, well. embarassing.
it is full of missed opurtunities.
i loved the awful "cyborg hand" that crops up later in the movie. some of the least inventive sfx ever.
the reason this gets 2 stars is because of the ever wonderful, ever beautiful michelle yeoh.
next up for vin "are we making another movie yet 3" |

Too much action, not enough SciFi, there was a plot in there but the movie ended while it was still a fetus. Mostly a vehicle for V.D. to shoot and kick ass. Oh, and fire the director for shooting the action scenes so poorly, or maybe he was just threading what footage he had and trying his best to keep us from hurling. Most pitiful chase: a set of Land Rovers after a bunch of Hummers? What, no helicopters allowed in the future? Most pitiful line: "Are you prepared to die for her?" "Yes." BANG! -- can you say "running a little long"? |

Now this was a movie I didn't expect much from. Just as well because that is exactly what I got. Fairly standard, banal stuff with the requisite wooden performance by VD, and a pretty woeful plot involving virgin births and a girl that suddenly develops super powers (as well as a personality disorder). Incoherent at best, with a routine post-apocalyptic tone, best avoided unless you are a VD completist. |

Despite all the controversy about the studio and director 'at war' and the director going so far as to bad mouth the film upon release, this is generally pretty watchable bunkum... it's no return to form for Vin Diesel, but then again, his 'form' generally seemed to be 'xXx' and 'The Fast and the Furious' so the further away from 'form' he gets, the better.
This is a very post-'Children of Men' sci-fi flick with shades of 'Blade Runner' and a handful of other flicks, yet it's all doused with a number of shoot-outs and action sequences that often go nowhere or serve no purpose other than to make a big noise. Yet it all remains quite passable...
Until somewhere near the end, when the 'plot' gets 'explained' and then it just finishes... it's one of the biggest anti-climaxes I've seen in a long time, there are no amazing revelations or twists or character choices or any of the things that would make the end of a film interesting or exciting or, at least, mildly satisfying. It really is |

I cdn't sleep after watching this, I love a movie where the protagonist argues theologically first with his enemies and only after that works and when they endanger innocents, resorts to violence.
For me, a key idea embedded in this movie is whether a person seeking to serve God first and foremost can avoid being accused of being a traitor to her/his country/people/religion....
