A very cool movie whose style makes up for a poor story. A completely unique movie, well worth seeing.
Action that will leave you dizzy along with good production are the main attractions to this mixed bag of zombies, martial-arts, guns, and gore. You don't actually care about the characters who are so poorly written because you are just bewildered by some amazing fight choreography and graphic gore. People fly through the air, kicking and chopping at everything they can or blasting everything that moves to pieces leaving blood, guts, spit and ass all over the woods.
The only thing that stops the rating from being higher is the attempt to cram a plot in where it doesn't belong. Although some might get tired of this attempt and switch off after 60 minutes, it's still a fun mix of horror, humor and good old teeth breaking carnage![]()
Nice and gruesome. Just the way a film like this should be!!! I love Tak's character. So laid back and not caring.
THIS FILM IS THE DEFINITION OF AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was totally blown away by its action, violence, UNIQUE fight scenes and the always present "cool factor". Ryuhei Kitamura (Azumi [2003]) brings his trully first remarkably fun film that defined his great style of filmmaking. This made my week so happy :D :D :D :D
77/100
A glorious B-movie fest. Like the hero, it knows it's cool as hell, but still manages not to take itself too seriously. If you loved Evil Dead II, I don't see how you could resist this one.
Deep in one of the forests of Japan, portal 444 of 666 exists, the portal to the 'other side'. In this place, the dead come back to life. Or something. Basically, it's another Zombie movie, and honestly the plot is best completely ignored/glossed over in this one (in fact the film starts to come off the tracks whenever it takes itself seriously - thankfully not often). Best seen as a show-off of inventive blood and gore effects and witty deaths, as well as cool Evil Dead style 'camera on stick' fancy tricks, there's much to enjoy here before it outstays its welcome. Which it inevitably does, about an hour and 10 minutes in. As soon as the exposition starts coming and the film just tries to give Tak Sakaguchi and Hideo Sakaki excuses to look vaguely cool-ish, tedium gradually increases until the penultimate showdown, which is very satisfying indeed. For some reason though, there's also tagged on a horribly cheap looking, and - I'm presuming - unintentionally hilarious far-future scene; hopefully not a foundation for a future-bound sequel. Performances are over the top but not un-enjoyably so, aside from a truly *awful* Chieko Misaki, and much of Versus is pretty good times.
I was expecting a bit more from this one, Kitamura has some creative camera ideas but needs to get over the fact that he didn't directed "The Matrix" films.
The film stretches way longer than it should, with long pauses of the two leads just standing around trying to look cool. Not really worth all the cult following that it got.
I wanted to rate this higher but that ending was just ridiculous, if they had cut that part out I'd say it was hilarious and deserves 3 and a half stars

I'm one of those folks who just didn't get it. It started out great, zombies and gangsters, but then it just stalls for the rest of it's running time. Sure there's nonstop action, but who cares? I am interested in seeing the director's cut since I heard he actually trims the film rather than adding to it.
Good mixture of Comedy/Horror/Action in this one. I found myself very interested for both the good and bad guys.
When watching it I was at first skeptical.
I mean..it's crazy samurai ninja zombies reincarnated and wanting to gain more power and all of this other crap....I can't even explain it.
But ultimately, it's really funny and has some great martial arts scenes.
Especially the final scene where that dude's eyes are amber.
It also kinda brilliant that the director was able to make a movie this appealing and shoot it all in the woods somewhere.
Don;'t really bother focusing on the story, because you'll just get lost. Just enjoy the wacky and seemingly pointless characters.
strange Zombie/Sci-fi/Action flick that kind of sucks you in to an unsure world that doesn't really want to explain itself!!!
A cult film that shows a low budget movie that still can be awesome.Find Director's Cut if you want more gore and action.
Absolutely amazing. It's funny, bloody, fast-paced, entertaining, and strangely beautiful. The cast is phenomenal and the dark humor accents the story amazingly. The camera work is beautiful as is the cast -- just about everyone in this flick is sexy, man. It's over the top and totally amazing.
Pretty Good. Good story line, a bit of Black Humor here and there, but the movie seemed like it was set out as a video game lol. Some of the fighting scenes got a bit boring after a while. Worth a watch.
After a recommendation from a friend about some "must see zombie flicks" I finally got a copy of Versus and I must say, it was pretty enjoyable.
Not really knowing what to expect, I went into this film thinking it might be a completely serious film about a group of people fighting off zombies. This movie definitely entertains, but it throws you into the action and reveals the plot as the film moves forward.
While Zombies are featured in the film, they are really just a minor plot detail, used to allow for huge amounts of action to take place and a few gory scenes of death to satiate us gore hounds.
Versus however is a little incoherent, it plays as a tale of good "Versus" evil in the attempt of evil to open one of the 666 portals of evil on earth. The protagonist and antagonist have a history together and have been fighting one another for the key to open the portal for over a hundred years. Since where the portal is located in the Forest Of Ressurection it has the power to bring the dead back to life.
Versus also has alot of tongue in cheek comedy from the supporting players, who say some hilarious stuff but most of the comedy is physical, with characters making goofy faces and getting punched kicked and slapped at inappropriate times, it's a another great aspect of Versus.
While I will warn, if you are looking for something with a strong coherent plot, I'd look elsewhere, Versus strengths come from it's battles with the undead and battles with each other as the choreography in the film is amazing and pulled off masterfully, also the cinematography in Versus is it's second strength, quick fast cuts and quick focal points while capturing the action at a break neck pace is the selling point. Versus is for martial arts fans with a bit of horrofic ghoulish zombie action thrown in to give it a twist. If that sounds up your alley you should definitely check it out.
A great Japanese action flik with, yakuza, demon people, samurai, guns, swords, and zombies! How do you fit so many amazing subjects into one movie you ask? Make one guy fight them all!
Martial-arts, zombies, mobsters, zombie mobsters and katana's that fall from the heavens. Over the top kung-fu zombie action. A tounge-in-cheek hommage to evil dead, Romero and anything kung-fu. I recommend the theatrical cut, as the wild nonsense action will get a tad boring in the longer directors cut.
