Plot: Cecil B. DeMille's original silent version of the classic biblical tale is a two-part saga that moves from Old Testament times to the immorality of the Roaring Twenties. The tale of Moses is told as a...( read more read more... ) prologue: Divinely inspired, Moses (Theodore Roberts) frees the Jewish slaves of Egypt from the bondage of the whip-wielding pharaoh Rameses (Charles De Roche). In true DeMille style, the director lavishly re-creates the splendor and decadent wealth of Ancient Egypt with a stylish 1920s Art Deco flair. A cast of thousands flees the great city and passes through the parted Red Sea in a stunning, technologically advanced sequence. The film also features hand-painted frames of fire and brimstone that engulf the screen and fade to black when DeMille deftly switches gears and tells a modern moral parable set in the 1920s household of a pious widow (Edythe Chapman) who reads from the Bible to her grown sons, expounding on the moral virtue of the Ten Commandments. This early classic is an intriguing combination of DeMille's passion for biblical spectacle and his love of entertaining morality tales.

    The Cecil B. DeMille
masterpiece. As epics go, so is the path of this one of biblical proportions. As stories put to screen come and go, this one is second to none.

Looking back at "The Ten Commandments", one can't help but marvel at it's epic scale . Scenes of chariots racing accross the desert and of the Israelites dancing in front of the golden calf are spellbinding. The special effects equally impressive, given the state of movies at the time. Both parts of this film, the first being a biblical epic and the second being a contemporary morality tale, are equally compelling. Excellent acting and story telling propel this into the classics category.

This has got to be the most over played film on TV in the world. It's okay, but it certainly feels like I'm at a play, not a movie.

Everybody has to follow the Ten Commandments because its the Lords request for us to worship him and what he has to say to obey.

"frees the Jewish slaves of Egypt from the bondage of the whip-wielding pharaoh Rameses".

Could they have made it sound more wrong? Honestly?

This movie makes Ben Hur look like an epic. Seriously over the top and spectacular, holds up surprisingly well today.

Though lacking in some points of accuracy with the scripture, this is an epic film to be enjoyed through the ages.

I'm not much for the EFFING Bible or anything, and it pisses me off that people are serious about trying to prove that the story of Moses really happened. What I'm all for is seeing the spokesman of the NRA leading a bunch of religious nuts throught the desert, now THAT'S entertainment!

This is the 1923 version, not the one with Charlton Heston.
