great fantasy family movie! i felt like a kid again while i was watching this movie. Not only for kids! =)
this movie is not really interesting then the movie but still nice too watch ... not really enjoy lol
There is no doubt in my mind that this film would never have made it to theaters if not for the giant success of the Harry Potter series. I'm not much of a fan of Harry Potter, and consequently I didn't enjoy this film much either. The story is based on a best-selling children's book. I haven't read it, but my guess is that the book is a much more satisfying experience. The movie's plot seems rushed, and several aspects that were probably described in great detail in the novel are merely glossed over. In addition, when reading the book the reader is free to use his/her imagination in regards to the appearance of the many fantasy creatures involved here, including goblins, fairies, ogres, etc. The movie audience, however, is forced to accept the filmmaker's bland and reused interpretation of how these imaginary beings should look. I usually turn my nose up when someone claims that "the book was much better than the movie," but in this case it must be true. At least I hope so since the movie is pretty poor.
Now apart from the fact that this film is just plain shite, this film makes about as much sense as England's border control. First off, why would the villain need the book to kill all the happy, gay fairy things? You never find out! Second (and this is just my opinion) why is the hero of the film some insolent little shit that doesn't need a chance to save the little gay fairies, but instead needs a damn good smack 'round the head. A single mum that has three kids and doesn't give the one that never does what he's fucking told a damn good thrashing? THAT is a true fairy tale. Oh, and the special effects are shit.
This was HORRIBLE. I didn't like it all, no imagination even for a child's film! I was bored out of my mind, and I think even my 2yr old son was bored too.
This is a great flick for young kids and the young at heart! Goblins and creeps come after a family who has moved to the country! But all in all-it's a cool adventure! Worth watching!
This was a good movie that makes me want to go back and read the book to see what was added or left out.
For the kids? Yes, indeed. For everyone else? Not so much. The acting by everyone else except Highmore is wooden and dull.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. It's more violent than I thought it would be but it was good!
Didnīt like it much. Fantastic creatures... where? I thought it would be much better. Sorry folks...
God, I'm such a sucker for fantasy movies. I read these books when I was younger and they did a good job moving it up so their readers (who are now much older) could really still enjoy the film.
boy did this movie suck. it was a poorly made, modern-day copy-cat version of the chronicles of Narnia. i watched this movie two times just to make sure, and it sucked both times. this movie makes no sense, and serves no purpose. i was greatly disappointed.
I am such a fan of movies that have to do with magical worlds, especially ones with faeries in them. :] This movie allowed me to escape this blah place for a while and that always makes me happy. I don't think I'll ever outgrow these types of movies. <3
I was kinda dissapointed with this Fantasy movie which was ok about twin brothers Jared and Simon played by Freddie Highmore in both roles who find themselves pulled into a fantasy world of faieries and other magical creatures.
A fun and magical family film. The performances from the child actors are very good and the story is easy to follow without getting lost. What I don't like about these fantasy films recently is that some have to much stuff going on and too many characters all scattered throughout the plot and you get somewhat overwhelmed or lost in its convoluted plot. This one goes right into the thick of things and rolls with it. No wasting any time. Plus I'm a sucker for fantastical and mythological creatures, and the effects were amazing.
VERY GOOD I REALLY ENJOYED IT, BUT THE NAMES OF SOME BEINGS WEREN'T VERY WELL DONE. THE FILM WAS KIND OF SHORT TOO, NEAR THE END EVERYTHING WAS MUDDLED TOGETHER FOR A MEMORABLE FINISH. I PERSONALLY ENJOYED THE OGRE'S DEMISE THOUGH.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE ! it makes me want to go outside and start the NEW ADVENTURES! you must watch this movie!!!! :x
Smashing children's fantasy tale with believable special effects and a fully formed pretext. Highmore is lovable but struggles with the enforced american accent. Strathairn looks bewildered. Fine for young children but the family life lessons are a bit trite.
The basic idea of the story was good, the effects and creation of the monsters etc was very good. Freddie was good as both roles, liked his performances. I thought all around it was a enjoyable family movie.
I was getting peeved at the beginning but as it came towards the end, it was nice to see, not fascinating but still well-handled. This does not forgive the rather sloppy start and film-making at the beginning. No set-up and nothing to feel emotion for, bad dialogue or bad directing, it was a lesson for all and to see how sometimes to be longer is fundamental for a better film
Saw this on my way to Australia. This is a very short ver. story tale telling like Lords of the Ring sereis
f. highmore in a twin role is well-played. the story has no weak moments, but also no surprising moment... something is missing and sometimes good special effects cannot fill this...
This was a charming and fine adventure/fantasy movie for the whole family or perhaps not for the youngest because there are som really scary and creepy creatures in it. Pretty much the same story like the most movies in this genre; good v/s evil, children in the mainroles, great effects/animations and a lots of odd figures. If you are a fan of films like Narnia, Willow and so on, this could be something for you.
Very good movie...
Great CG, funny creatures and a touchy performance by Joan Plowright makes this my favorite of these "children" movies. The CG is pure class, it has the right mix of reality and fantasy.
The Spiderwick Chronicles undeniably makes fantasy and magic fun. While a few scenes of unnecessary predicaments involving the children's divorced parents could have been cut, the film manages not to be overly preachy, even with its many positive messages and abounding morals. With pleasing characters, family-friendly magical adventure and a mind-bogglingly fantastical world of faeries, goblins and ogres, The Spiderwick Chronicles is extraordinarily entertaining fantasy fun.
I love it.

You'd be missing out on a good movie if you listen to Richard Roeper's review from the show, same goes for the review of his friend. They both don't know what they are talking about.
very good movie. they changed a lot from what is in the books, but if you do not take the books into account then the movie was really great!
I admit it was good but it is not like the books. It has some stuff from the books but its all twisted and different and they added stuff. I wish they would just have stuck to the books and not changed it so much.
