MCT:August 31, 2008Saw this for the first time last night. Tim Curry was really good.. a lot of the songs are quite catchy and of course the time warp being the one I already knew, was great to see the actual context of it. The film itself was odd of course and I can see why it's a cult fave, but it didn't impress me that much.

What a terrible movie. Even being wasted didn't help me tolerate this movie all that much. I've tried to watch it once before, b/c a girl i liked blah blah blah...and i couldn't get throuh more than 10 min. of it.
The only reason i actually saw it this time was b/c a friend wanted to go see this for her birthday. -

Okay, everyone's seen this movie and it almost seems blasphemous to sh*t on it. After all, it is a movie that did very poorly during its initial theatrical run, but made insane money during the midnight movie craze. Heck, it is THE midnight movie of all time. But here's the deal: It actually isn't that good.
The beginning starts to kind of win me over. The opening song really refers to all the movies that inspired this film. Watching that, I really thought, "Man, those are some great movies and I totally know what I'm getting into." Too bad that this movie doesn't even remotely hold a candle to any of those movies. What this movie is should be considered shocking for shocking's sake. I mean, we all know the image of Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-n-Furter, the sweet transvestite from Transexual Transylvania. But beyond that, there's nothing else to really be said for the film. It's actually really boring and doesn't make a lot of sense.
That's not to say that the movie is absolutely terrible. Usually, I reserve this low of a score for absolutely abysmal films. There's a bit of cool to this movie that the film really relies on. The music, while totally unrelated to the plot in many instances, is pretty decent and the performances are kind of fun. It's great to see Susan Sarandon not make a political jackass out of herself and I guess that is a victory in itself. Barry Bostwick, on a similar note, is very fun. Sure, these are all one dimensional characatures of horror's yesteryear, but the performances are kind of fun. I can't say anything about the performances and outside of the music kind of just filling space, it is pretty okay.
I think my main problem with this movie is the same thing that I have with my distaste for John Waters. Waters films are dependent on that shock factor. It's the oh-look-a-conservative-man-doing-something-sexual bit. Frankly, I never really found that joke all that funny. For some reason, any time I see this kind of film, I realize that the director is totally relying on that joke to carry the film, so all other aspects of the film are kind of just thrown away. In this case, it is the plot. Aimless and ridiculous. It's almost painful to watch sometimes and that really hurts me as a lover of film. (A modest lover of film.)
One of the things I should really delve into is the fact that this movie kind of carries the pulp banner. There is a certain kind of movie that always really bothers me. It is the movie that goes out to be really culty. Now, there have been a few successes. I can't say that they are all terrible, but this one certainly is. This and Being John Malkovich. There's a certain knowledge with what they are making. They know that this kind of movie wasn't appealing to the mass consensus. If it was honestly made by a bunch of transexual movie nerds who really dug sci-fi, I couldn't begrudge them. But look at this cast! You know that this movie was trying to be so shocking that it was going to gain an audience simply based on the fact that it was going to upset parents.
I admit, I can't blame this movie soley. After all, it is an adaptation of a London stage play. But someone pushed to make this movie very public. Bewteen the producers of the stage play and the creators of the film, someone really wanted a lot of attention from shocking people out of their comfort zones. Frankly, I don't really care how it affected society. I think it is all bollocks.
Honestly, I don't see what everyone is talking about. I know that this movie seems counter-culture, but in my opinion, the movie is aimed at people who are being rebellous because they are disillusioned. The movie isn't very good and probably doesn't deserve the attention that it has gotten over the past three decades. -

I LOOOOOOVEEEE this movie!!! Really weird but perfect casting and great songs to sing along to. I love Rocky and his gold boxers and Dr Frankenfurt. Tim Curry is really brilliant and his costume is quite intriguing....

This movie was hilarious if you watched it in its entire context, i have become a big Tim Curry fan ever since. I think that this movie has been addicted to the song, 'and a jump to the riii-iii--ght, out your hands on your hips and pulls your knees in tiiigghhhtt..', this movie is brilliant in its own stupid way. Transvestite, a supposed reincarnation of frankenstein(but more handsome) and a young couple in love. You have to be patient with all the singing and dancing but its an hour of amusement thats definately worth your time.

I like this film; I grew up with it. I was a teenager when it was popular and went to many midnight showings. This is a good musical with great music! About Brad & Janet, a young couple stranded in a rain storm and took refuge in a scary castle and the events that take place there. I like this musical and highly recommend it!

I am not a hedonist, I have morals, but this movie probably liberated millions of people to explore their sexuality around the world... as a piece of art it is magnificent but as a teaching or philosophy it is abhorant... when I was in church I gave away my CD and destroyed my poster and any trace of the film on video... then bought the sound track AGAIN upon leaving church LOL, and the DVD

Pretty harsh, MorpheusOne. Maybe you should give this masterpiece another chance. I don't know anyone who has seen it and not fell in love (a few in lust). I think in the right atmosphere you might like it better. Get some of your friends together, put on some fishnets and party hats and get up and Time Warp with the your fellow Transylvanians. I think you will see the light shining off of those luscious lips and think, "What have I been missing? Thank you jarvismiranda for talking me into reconsidering my views of this delicious film."

I love this movie! I went to many midnight showings as a teenager and threw food and other things like the rest. "Let's do the time warp again". Love this movie!

I would have given it "0" stars if I could have! This is DEFINITELY one of the worst movies, one of the most OVERATED movies, EVER, in the history of western civilization!
If you like soap opera's and musicals then this piece of garbage is for you. Don't come near me or have anything to do with my gene pool. You should cut off and/or out your sexual organs and don't you dare pollute this world with your seed!

The first time i saw this movie i was 5 years old, you have to love this movie, it is by far one of the best movies ever made. I can't wait to dress up and go to the midnight show this Halloween!!!!
