Except for a few scenes and the ending, the film stay close to the book.
It is a fun movie to watch after reading the book which original title for the book was "The Fog."
The elder teacher was my favorite character in the book.
In the movie she was a bit waterdown.

First of all, the Computer-generated imagery looked TERRIBLE. Every time there is a digital creature, you can instantly tell its digital. Why not use practical effects?

Next , there is no real suspense, and overall, really bad dialog

And the ending... **** Super SPOILER **** The father, his kid, the teacher, and two elderly people escape in a vehicle. Well, they seem to avoid all the bugs, and drive until they run out of gas. Then, they all agree to commit suicide. The dad kills his kid, the woman, and the old couple. Pretty crappy ending. The movie was bad enough, then dad just offs everybody for no real reason. Come on... they go through all that trouble to survive, just to run out of gas and BANG BANG BANG BANG. Movie over. Guess there were 5 of them, but 4 bullets. Does Hollywood really think people want an ending like that? It was stupid!!!

One of the most disappointing films I've seen in years. ....

Well, i actually don't really like the story, but it was okay.
It was strange, mist came from nowhere it disappear suddenly in the end.
I can't really feel the thrill of horror of this supposed-to-be horror thrilling movie.
But I like the reactions of stressed and under constant pressure people inside the store.
People are beginning to find someone who can give them hope.
Somehow they turned to Ms. Carmody. Marcia Gay Harden was acting really great. She made me really hate her and wanna kill her when she said 'those peoples... who angered God, split his atoms, blah blah..'
OMG... she was acting really good, that I was so happy when she was shot right on her head.
The story was just complicated and strange... One second they wanna go outside, the other second they were so afraid to even open the door.
One second there can be tons of beasts and strange poisonous insects and spiders, and suddenly they all disappear on the way to the pharmacy.

The ending was.... how can I say it...?
Yeah... they're out of gas and suddenly decided shot themselves... very 'funny'...
And few minutes later... tanks and all the army rescued him...
OMG... that was so . . . . left me hanging.
One of the most annoying ending I've ever seen.

I think this is a great movie, the monster didn't play big part in this movie, but the message of this film was so good, which is "never stop to trying and think very clearly before you do something"

I discovered this Frank Darabout jem in the video store, after hearing good word of mouth about it.
What I originally thought was a rip-off of "the Fog" was something all together different indeed, the film is not as much a "monster" movie as it is a character study in human nature.
A very effective adaptation of Stephen King's novella, Darabout(Green Mile,Shawshank Redemption) who is a self proclaimed "King" nut is drawn to these types of stories that center around the action and/or inactions of the main characters of the film and the consequences they create.
The film features a who's who of veteran character and b list actors including the very talented Marcia Gay Harden, Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, Laurie Holden ,and Thomas Jane in the lead role.
The effects are subtle but convincing, not interferring with the story or overwhelming the general look of the film.
If you haven't seen it check it out...I highly reccomend it!
Fantastic acting all around especially from Marcia Gay Harden as Ms. Carmody, and you'll never forget the shocking ending....EVER!

I thought that I had seen this movie before, but I guess I really just saw it in my mind, as I read the original novella years ago. The "real" movie was a great adaptation, though, and the ending was quite a twist...wow...!

Everything that director Frank Darabont touches that comes from Stephen King turns to gold! It is rare to find a good entertaining horror movie with a great story, great acting, great character development (you know, so you actually care about what happens to people when danger lurks... what a concept!), great pacing, and is genuinely creepy. You'll get that all here, as well as what has got to be one of the most shocking endings in movie history. An amazing movie that I would highly recommend. Whereas one of Darabont's other King adaptations, The Shawshank Redemption, is about hope, this is more about hopelessness, so it may not be for everyone.

On one given morning a mist covered one small town. It's not an ordinary mist, it had horrors that no human being, alive, can tell.

5 people, try to get out of town, try to running from the mist. They got 4 wheel-drive vehicle run them through the darkness of the mist. But the mist just too thick. The horrors, just won't let them get away.

Trapped, cold, feared. At this moment, they know, die far more beautiful then the horrors they must face. They know, there will be no help coming from any direction. Even from above. The only help they see is a 66' Magnum with 4 bullets in it. But there are 5 of em.

How the last one, the unlucky one must end his life?

The Mist was written by Stephen King, one of my favorite author on Horror reading. The thing I like about The Mist is, there is no hero in this story. All character equally involved on the story. All got cried, all got punished.

I have to admitted, Stephen King is the King.

The plot is pretty much a horror standard: a bunch of different people trapped in a building with something that wants to eat them lurking outside, causing them to quarrel amongst themselves. In this case, it's a mysterious mist filled with truly bizarre creatures. The CGI effects of the film are incredibly weak, but it actually doesn't matter because the interactions between the characters are so fascinating--and the film wisely keeps its monsters unseen as much as possible. This is also a great film in the sense that the viewer cannot simply predict who lives and dies. The ending does not work for some viewers, but I found it to be a terrific punch in the gut that only a good horror story can provide.

Adorei!!! Os exageros e o descontrole podem gerar catástrofes! Ótimo filme para refletir sobre ciência e religiosidade, para perceber que a falta de limites em qualquer dos aspectos pode destruir o ser humano.

i loved it. good old sci/fi horror has to have a moral question as the genesis of the story. this movie takes care of that order extremely well. this film asks the question of what exactly are fear and faith and do they exist entirely apart from each other? do they have the power to cancel each other out? the creepy suspenseful parts were well done. the cgi doesn't become overwhelmingly cheesy because there is a good script and actors bolstering the whole story. more of a philosophical and sociological commentary on group and individual dynamics than an out and gorefest -- don't mistake me, there is gore enough for everyone. it was pretty old school in approach which i applaud. jane and gay harden carry the movie very well.

Good B movie. Marcia Gay Harden succeeded in making me dislike her strongly. Only let down was Thomas Janes performance at the end. Didn't have the acting ability to pull off the final scene. I wont givwe it away but watch it and you will understand. I did however, like the idea for the ending.

This is one good horror film! Before eye go into whats so awsome about the movie first eye'm going to tell you what you won't find, standard pretty boy or hottie girl, bad acting, cheesey effects, and laughable moments. Here is what you well find though, realistic tension, cool creatures, realistic characters, one scarey religious freak, and a shocking ending. If only horror movies of this caliber were to be released more often. Unfortunitly eye read the short story by Stephen King so the movie wasn't as scarey as it wouldv'e of been were eye not to know what would happen in the movie. For those who haven't read the short story, man you're in for a treat. For all horror fans this is a must see!

I'm not a weak stomached person. I can handle gore and scary movies but the ending of this movie turns my stomach every time i think about it. The would have to be one of the most horrible things in the world. If you watched it you know what i'm talking abot. If you haven't watched it, prepare your stomach for the ending.

If anyone is looking the song at the very end of the show its, The Host of Seraphim by Dead Can Dance. If you have iTunes, it should be in iTunes store.

Its a beatiful and haunting song.

The film wasn't bad at all even if it was flawed, I believe all people have a dark side waiting to come out & nothing like panic or fear of the unknown would bring the monster out. The true monsters in this film are the people in the grocery store not the ones in the mist. The ending , however was completely uncalled for & lacked any kind of logic; why not wait in the car for as long as they can, why rush things?

I do have to say that I was not a huge fan of this movie. It was alright, but there were things that could have been redone. The book is a lot better and I prefer that ending. This ending did nothing for me. As far as the "crazy lady" that was a huge idea of the story, she is meant to be hated, that's the point. I think if Stephen King had more of a hand in the making of this movie it would be better.

To me this is a typical Stephen King movie/book when the concept is basically a simple one and then it is hammered over and over again. These instant-characters who basically come out of a cartoon. I don't care about the special effects so that is not my complaint.

The characters go to the next door drugstore but can't get to the car that is visible from the store window? "Hey, who owns the 2004 Scion"??

The "heroes" go through what they do, only to allow themselves to be shot because they run out of gas? Then the tragic emergence of the Marines 5 minutes after the guy kills his son? C'mon. This seems like a f-you from Stephen King seeing what people will swallow.

Oh. I forgot to say, I hated this film.

It's a very well thought story about where desperation may lead you in times of criciss,I was shocked how quicklly people turned one against the other and how they were listening to all that bullshit from that fake prophet, seeing that pour souldier getting stabbed to death kinda remined me of Jesus on he's last road on this earth. And that end....left me speachless I think most of us whould have done the same. This movie wasn't made to be extremly scarry or to be a huge hit in the box office, but was made to show the hidden dark "otherside" in our human mentality.

Did anyone besides me get the prophetic references (not in what the Bible lady said, but in the events of the movie themselves)? It parallels a lot of what it says in the Book of Revelation in the Bible.

p.s. I agree with what barbadosx said, also.

To everyone who goes on about the monsters weren't that scary or whatever - the monsters weren't supposed to be the scary part! What humanity is capable of is supposed to be what chills you, and this movie - delivers! And brilliantly, too.

I loved the scary parts of this movie that would be the only reason i'd tell people to watch it but I hate the ending that tops my list of awful endings. Also the characters are terrible most of them are real stupid I think there just supposed to be crazy but no. I thought even the main charcter Thomas jane plays was bad. He leaves his kid alone most of the film and in the end you all know what he does... I'd like to say so much more but i'll end up typing forever...
