Matrix films do what they do,still too much hype around them at the time, would rather watch a proper martial arts film.
This is a good film with a lot of intricate plot details and amzing fight scenes. It is unfortunate that it followed in the steps of Blade and Mission Impossible, by having two extremely bad sequels becuase I think it had the potential to be an amzing trilogy.
This is an awesome and provoking movie. In a way, it tells us a lot about our own collective unconsciousness . Keanu Reeves is a terrible actor though...
The concept of humans being used by machines as batteries is cool and scary. I like the premise that the matrix is created to satisfy the human batteries in their slumber, and I love the twist that deja vu is described as a glitch in the matrix. That draws the viewer in as actors in the film. Did they have to go and get Keanu Reeves, though? I guess this movie was more up his alley than many others because he has very few speaking lines, therefore not causing himself to betray his deficit of acting skills. I watched this movie the other week and the fight scenes were so obviously choreagraphed to be almost silly, but the camera work and special effects are amazing.
I did not want to like this movie because of the folks who were worshipping it when it started to catch on, but I thought it was quite well produced and a great execution of a concept. I often re-watch this when it comes around on cable again.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
To me?? a mind-blowing ass-kicker movie.
The begginig of the legendary trilogy, and YES it IS the most copied movie of all times, and at the same time the most HATED one...
And is simply because people dont want to understand it, and they always fear what they dont understand.
But the Wachowski Bro´s added the CG element to it, and they made it understandable even for the most primitive mind. So they hate it...
I think is the same phenomenum from Ang Lee´s HULK; he picked a character so cheap and useless and bring it into a hole new level...he gave it life to something absurd and insipid (those who dont know, the HULK is green only because a printing error)
It was too much for them, like giving pearls to the pigs.
So people hate it that movie, without knowing why.
Its funny, in the end its like giving to a CAVEMAN a brand new DVD Player :P
I was studying Graphic Design when that appeared... it was a "esthetic revolution" on visual art expression.
Besides, this film, the first one, has not only great fights, but also great deep and strong meanings... Don't make it easy as "which one is the reality"... If you pay attention you'll see a good metaphore about world system... (and what's more important, do you really want to know how the system is? do you really want to realize about it?... keep making questions yourself...)
I'm always amazed at people who don't 'get' The Matrix.
They're probably the same people who can't understand the concept behind the Internet.....
When I first saw this film at the cinemas, I came out looking at everything around me, and found myself asking how did I *KNOW* the world around me is REALITY????
No other film has ever affected me in such a profound way...
(Except maybe when I was a kid and Star Wars came out PMSL)
