One of the very best horror movies to come out in ages. A japanese man kills his wife and the a bad spiritual imprint was left on the house. The movie was entertainin enough, very much in a "The Ring" vein. Creepy lady with long greasy black hair, moving very slowly towards you. I get it.

Maybe the Asian horror novelty effect is wearing off, maybe it's the fact that I had already seen the sequel to the original (Ju On 2), which felt almost like the original of this remake (which I haven't seen and don't plan to), or maybe I just don't like the principle of "Americanizing" Japanese horror by injecting box office stars whose potential is under-exploited (don't expect to see Bill Pullman much), but I found this film rather boring and uninvolving. Moreover, I prefer my Asian ghosts to have more psychological depth about them than just a plain desire to kill people. So I'll stay with "Dark Water" and "Two Sisters".

It was all scary at first because it introduced us to a new sort of scary figure (girl with long hair over face with a white dress).. That's the thing that scared me the most.. now it's like, egh.

Scary images, dumb story. This movie is nothing without startling scares. And they're sort of only scary the first time you see it.

Yet another Japanese horror film brought here to America. This has to be one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen. Just steer clear no matter what. Not worth anyone's time.

This movie moves waaaaay too slowly and doesn't deliver the scares. The creepy stuff is creepy, but there just isn't enough. Rifftrax turns this awful movie into a delight, though.

I didnt hate it but it was not as good as I was hoping, especially after seeing The Ring, and I was able to predict the next step throughout.

Do something! PLEASE! Do something. It's like being attacked by a funeral procession!! DO SOMETHING. Hey it's that guy from LOST - what a waste. I think she wore that in the last season of Buffy. I liked Buffy. Things happened on Buffy. No THINGS happen in this. And oil that door! What? Oooooh that's the "Grudge sound" - got it. Doing my bills is more frightening.

the japanese girl at the end is the scariest part like crawling down the stairs and in the closet. other than that i really don't see it as a good movie. there really was no motivation for any of this, too many unanswered questions. i dont like that. the ring is waaaay better

This movie scared the bejesus outta me the first time I sat down and watched it.. Second time coming around it doesn't have as much of a effect on me and I understood the movie well.. On another topic, the movie wasn't the best, though kayako appearing every time whether it'd be beneath the bed, in the showers, or outside of your houseis still a scary though.. I loved Sarah Michele Gellar in the movie, she's not just a pretty face (though she really is) but she has done some good acting, she's also done some good work in her previous films like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, I know what you did last summer etc so I'm a big fan and also her birthday is exactly the same day as mine :P.. Overall I'd recommend it though I wouldn't say it was fantastic, I only really liked it cos of Sarah Michelle Gellar, The Ring would be a better recommendation.

    Synopsis (taken from Rotten Tomatoes)
In Sam Raimi and Columbia Pictures' powerful thriller The Grudge, based on the Japanese blockbuster JU-ON: THE GRUDGE, the normal façade of a modest house in Tokyo belies the hidden terror within. It is possessed by a violent plague that destroys the lives of everyone who enters. Known as "The Grudge," this curse causes its victims to die in the grip of a powerful rage. Those who are fatally afflicted by the curse die and a new curse is born - passed like a virus to all those who enter the house in an endless, growing chain of horror. Karen (SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR) is an exchange student studying social work in Japan who innocently agrees to cover for a nurse who didn't show up for work. When she enters the assigned home, she discovers an elderly American woman, Emma (GRACE ZABRISKIE), who is lost in a catatonic state while the rest of the house appears deserted and disheveled. As she is tending to the stricken old woman, Karen hears scratching sounds from upstairs. When she investigates, she is faced with a supernatural horror more frightening than she could ever imagine. Within this house, a chain of terror has been set in motion resulting from a terrifying evil that was born years before. As more people die, Karen is pulled into the cycle of horror and learns the secret of the vengeful curse that has taken root in this house. Now she must stop it before it's too late. Comment for Ellen Rothwell:

Let me take a guess, you are only watching the crappy hollywood 'horror' films? Spread your horizons, make sure you rent films from different countries, such as The Devils Backbone....and especially Japanese horror films such as The Eye and A Tale of Two Sisters.
