It's hard for me to like a movie like this - where the vast majority of it is depressing and frustrating. Yet it is undoubtedly a moving film, with excellent acting all around, most prominent of course being Whoopi's role.
Wonderful and fantastic movie made by Stephen Spielberg which first introduced Whoopi Goldberg starring as Celie. All actors portrayed in this movie from Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover were all fantastic in this touching movie. It's too bad that Spielberg did not get an Oscar nod for this masterpiece. A winner.
This is a perfect example of something brilliant being shot down. There is no excuse. Everything about this film is perfect, with the exception of the dubbed singing voice of Shug Avery.
The struggles and the obstacles have to be overcame with much pride and dignity, Goldberg shines, and this movie made me a fan of hers
really good story the best performances of whoopi goldberg oprah winfrey and danny glover in their lives. inspired by a pulitzer prize book. directed by the only steven spielberg, wat else do u want from a movie?
I like the story and danny Glover and whoopie Goldberg where very good and this was one of the first movie for oprea
a top film must see one of the best films she every has done whoopi has put her heart into this film
It took me nearly twenty years to finally get to see this film. I am so happy I got the chance. It was an amazing, emotional but never sentimental drama of life pictured by an exceptional female cast. Chapeau bas to everyone involved in this film
Based on the award winning novel, 'The Color Purple' is the story of Celie, a young African-American woman living in the deep south with her Father and younger sister Nettie. Forever being told she is ugly and worthless, Celie rarely shares any of her thoughts with anyone except Nettie and God, but when she is married off to a cruel man she knows only as 'Mr' and separated from her beloved Nettie, Celie suffers in silence for most of her adult life. That is until she meets the charismatic singer Shug Avery and strong-willed Sofia, with whom she develops close and important relationships with. From then on she begins to find the courage to believe in herself and the ability to change. A profound story of patience and hope, 'The Color Purple' will take you in to the depths of sadness but also to the heights of happiness. Spielberg's gentle direction allows the films emotionally complex nature to be as sincere as possible, at all times the film is controlled, honest and clear of its direction, making it all the more powerful and moving. There is an outstanding cast, particularly Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg who shines in her reserved portrayal of Celie. She radiates a silent strength which carries the film to astonishing emotional heights. A superb melodrama with a lot of heart, 'The Color Purple' will leave you moved to distraction. Wonderful.
This movie came out when I was in my 20's, and I cried thru the whole movie, I could not believe that people were treated the way they were. But, I loved it, and I have seen it over and over, Woopy Goldburg is a very good actress.
one of the best movies of all time.....comedy......drama......all that and then \some...........worth it to watch. u show is ugly....and believe me whoopi was in the color purple...
Another Top 10 rating here...the book itself is magnificent, and the movie, although straying in some parts, really puts the faces to the characters. Breathtaking performances by the whole cast!!
My girlfriend had me sit through this. It wasn't as bad as Fried Green Tomatoes, but I could have done just fine without seeing it. It was just "blah" and kept going on and on.
It's a very fine story, with a vibrant quality. The ups-and-downs of the main character hooks you to the story.
Epic drama about an African-American woman's struggle to overcome the hardships of life in the southern united states. Uplifting, and with a fantastic performance by Whoopi Goldberg, this is unashamedly emotional, although tends to suffer in places from a lack of empathy from helmer Steven Spielberg
This movie was really amazing.
It's really tragic what African-American women went through back then.
It was very heartbreaking to see
Whoopi Goldberg's character suffer through so much pain and misery during her whole life.
Oprah Winfrey's character was amazing, she was so strong willed and knew how to stand up for herself.
It was a wonderful movie with a great cast.
This is definitely my all time favorite move! The only thing i dont like about this movie is the lack of credit given to Desreta (young Celie). Her acting was just as good if not better than that of whoopie. I felt that she has not been given the proper recognition for her mahor role in this movie. Hats off to you Desreta!
Okay so I've been meaning to rate this movie for quite some time, but didn't know what to say- and I still don't but- eh. So I think it was brilliant. Excellent plot, characters, acting, ending. I loved it all, I laughed, cried, stared in shock, etc. This is one of the best films of all time.
I enjoye dreading the book took a little while to get use to the movie but with so much of my favourite actors involved it was worth the time
This is a great movie with a very moving ending! On "My 5 Star Dramas" & "I Cry Everytime" lists. VHS.
it is for me the best drama i have ever seen... a tearjerker!
the acting of the then newcomer whoopi goldberg is flawless... celie is one of my childhood heroine... i love the book by alice cooper but the adaptaion is excellently justified... steven created a masterpiece tha is undoubtedly could stand the test of time when it comes to heartfelt film making... bravo!
Just Brilliant!! The performances from Whoopi and Oprah were simply outstanding and would surely have won Oscars if not for the time. Still grates on me that they didn't.
This was Steven Spielberg's first "serious" dramatic film, and I must say, it doesn't disappoint. I'm aware that the film tones down some of the more controversial and edgy content that was present in Alice Walker's source material (and does so quite a bit), but that is not a problem. People criticized him for directing this (the African American community), feeling he wasn't the right director for the job, but I say he was. Alice Walker herself even suggested that he do it. Some might say that with Spielberg's toning down of the material doesn't make it quite as much of a mature film as it could/should have been, but again, not a problem. He delivered in that area in spades later on, and besides, this was his first "serious" film-give him a break. The performances here are brilliant and flawless. No one screws up here. It's sad that this was Whioopi Goldberg's first major film, and that she has yet to return to serious fare like this, instead opted for comedy, and eventually, seemingly fading off into obscurity. Oprah annoys me now a days, but in this film, she delivers a performance so strong and great that I'm willing to forget that she bugs me. Sad, happy, funny, touching, compelling, inspiring, hopeful, uplifting, cruel, painful, wonderful, moving, and beautiful. These are all words that perfectly describe The Color Purple. I'm mad that this film was nominated for 11 Oscars and won none, but that, like the subject matter in the film, is (like it or not) an unfortunate fact of life. This was one of the best films of the 1980's, and everyone needs to see it. They will be a better person for doing so.
