Plot: Bigger isn't always better, but for anyone who enjoyed Pitch Black, a nominal sequel like The Chronicles of Riddick should prove adequately entertaining. Writer-director David Twohy retu...( read more read more... )rns with expansive sets, detailed costumes, an army of CGI effects artists, and the star he helped launch--Vin Diesel--bearing his franchise burden quite nicely as he reprises his title role. The Furian renegade Riddick has another bounty on his head, but when he escapes from his mercenary captors, he's plunged into an epic-scale war waged by the Necromongers. A fascist master race led by Lord Marshal (Colm Feore), they're determined to conquer all enemies in their quest for the Underverse, the appeal of which is largely unexplained (since Twohy is presumably reserving details for subsequent "chronicles"). With tissue-thin plotting, scant character development, and skimpy roles that waste the talents of Thandie Newton (as a Necromonger conspirator) and Judi Dench (as a wispy "Elemental" priestess), Twohy's back in the B-movie territory he started in (with The Arrival), brought to vivid life on a vast digital landscape with the conceptual allure of a lavish graphic novel. But does Riddick have leadership skills on his resumé? To get an answer to that question, sci-fi fans will welcome another sequel. --Jeff Shannon

'The Chronicles of Riddick' seems to be a movie that is always on the receiving end of unfair flak. I can understand why in most cases, but I question whether some of the critics have seen the film. After all, it can hardly be considered a 'nominal sequel', as one critic stated. There is nothing nominal about it, when compared with 'Pitch Black'. A 'nominal' sequel to this film would no doubt take some people back to the planet it was set on, and face the same monsters again - and more of them. Most likely, the people would not be at all related to the first film. That is the suit that most sequels follow - more of the same. Chronicles is certainly not this. In fact, it is hardly a sequel at all - which is perhaps why it has never once been pegged as one.

Many have complained about the lack of character development. Fair enough. However, it's not needed, and if you would like, there is an entire film dedicated quite separately to the character development of Riddick - 'Pitch Black'. Still, I would contend that Riddick's character develops a fair bit during the film - for crying out loud the guy is crying at the end of the film! I had hardly imagined that possible even having seen 'Pitch Black', yet I did not question it at all by the end of Chronicles.

As to the weak plot, If you say Chronicles doesn't, then I would argue that few if any sci-fi operas, or epic fantasy films have. I actually found it well put together, and felt the story was very full. Many have complained about the place names, but lets be honest, those are exactly the sorts of names our society would give! Just look at the American West if you want proof! This alone makes the universe in this movie seem more connected to ours.

Admittedly the talent is not taken full advantage of, but as this film was intended as part of a trilogy (as yet unmade), with 'Pitch Black' as a separate but connected tale (like 'the Hobbit' is to 'Lord of the Rings', according to Vin Diesel), it would be expected that more would be seen of these characters in later installments. When taken in this context, the film serves as an excellent introduction to a larger story and some of its principle players.

Considering the current state of mind bogglingly unoriginal and empty fantasy films which seem to have dominated the market for the last few years, it is a breath of fresh air to find a space opera with beautiful art direction and imagery. It's also nice to find a film on such a scale that is not childish, and is wonderfully dark. In the end I hope we see the other two films made in this series. The story looks to be epic, and I very much look forward to see where its going.

It's a movie that had potentail, with some genuine ideas hidden amidst Vin Diesel kicking anyone and everyone's ass. And I have to admit that although he's by no means a great actor, he's certainly grown on me. But this movie suffers, amongst other things, from the cheesiness that ruins so many potentially good Science Fiction films. Apparently the same prop-master that works on those aweful Sci-Fi channel movies was also free to work on this film.

After a while, this movie just got really old. Nothing really new with Vin Diesel. Just the same old kick ass, save woman, save the day movie. I thought Pitch Black was a hell of a lot better.

Pitch Black was exciting and kept close to the Aliens theme. I found this sequel to have a more original theme but using Riddick from Pitch Black.
There are many awesome kick ass fight scenes with dudes who think they are as hard as nails.
One funny moment was the prison kill scene; where Riddick threathens to kill the inmates with a cup.
Overall, it has the right amount of action weaved with adventure.

Oh ya, almost forgot! Play the game; Escape from Butcher Bay to learn more about the origins of Riddick.

Vin Diesel reprises his role of "Riddick," a an escaped convict with the ability to see in darkness, who is caught in a war between the "Necromongers" and the people of the world he ends up on while running from a group of bounty hunters.

The movie is most certainly high on action and computer-generated special effects, but the dialogue is a little to be desired.

The characters are not greatly defined, possibly because this is a sequel of "Pitch Black," a movie I haven't seen. I am not sure, with exception of "Riddick", which of the characters are introduced in this movie, and which were introduced in the first movie. I suggest that you see the first movie just in case, which is something I should have done myself.

Despite not knowing which characters came from the first movie, and which didn't, I noticed that this movie has a lot more action than most sci-fi movies I've seen. This movie thrives more on action than dialogue, which can be good and bad at the same time. However, you forget the fairly weak dialogue because you get such a short break between action scenes.

Despite not seeing the first movie, I pretty much liked this particular movie. It didn't make me want to see the first movie as soon as possible, but it does have me a bit curious about it.

    "Furyans. Defiant to the end."
A great sci-fi action movie with great special effects and a great score by Graeme Revell. Great cast with Colm Feore as The Lord Marshal, Linus Roache as The Purifier, Karl Urban as Lord Vaako, Alexa Davalos as Kyra, Judi Dench as Aereon and Vin Diesel as Riddick.

This sequel to the 2000 sleeper hit scifi cult flick takes Riddick, Diesel again, to a prison planet of extreme heat and cold. This movie is just manic, like the planet, and has new effects, but is just lacking in everything else.

Never thought they'd make a sequel to Pitch Black. The story that follows the Hitchcockian Sci-Fi flick tends to explain more why Riddick is the way he is than expand upon the clever drama of the first film. The near mythological prophecy gets a little ridiculous, considering where the character started out at, but this film definitely needs a third one to complete the tale. Where things were left at, it feels more like the conclusion of a reinterpretation of a Shakespeare play than an action movie. Otherwise, the movie is worth watching if you haven't seen the first film just for the side characters played by Karl Urban, Thandie Newton, and Nick Chinlund. Their machinations to win big nearly steal the screen from Diesel.

Saw it on the telly the other night. Definitely not as good as Pitch Black, but still worth a viewing. Good effects and action with basic plot. I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy the dvd.

Alot of people hate this movie, but they shouldnt. Its quite fun to watch, with all the running, stabing & Vin Diesel. But at times it seems more like a computer game then a movie.

Considering this was made after Pitch black your expecting something really good, but then it turns out really bad, the fighting is brilliatn and having jack back is perfect. Vin Diesel is the same as always on top form and at the end you knew it was comming but still i'm not impressed, it could've been much better than it was.

Okay so maybe this movie wasn't as brilliant as it seems but it is freaking awesome! Evryone who loves science fiction should really see this movie it is so intresting. The building, weapons, technology right down to the peoples clothing was way cool. I like the little boomerang looking knofes Riddick had they were so cool! My favorite part was when the wolf things came out and they tried to eat the people but Riddick like, hypnotized them and they didn't kill him. Confusing yes, but totally wicked a sci-fi must see!

I must admit, Riddick was even better then Pitch Black. Great Acting, Great special effects. I love this Movie. I enjoyed the first one in Germany and this one in German as well. The Voice in German is just great.
Pitch Black and Riddick always moves me to think if Vin Diesel could be a great as Sam Fisher. (Tom Clancy`s Splinter Cell)
However, Vin Diesel was just convicing as a COOOOLLL GUY. Nah I just love this Movie in German language. By the way the Voice I m talking about, even Steven Spielberg was impressed by the voice of Martin Kessler.

Definitely a good movie! Action, cool characters, smart lines, twists and turns. Visually beautiful, tasteful effects... What else can one hope for?

It is good to see "Pitch Black" before this movie, but it isn't terribly necessary. There are little remarks between the movies, which are good for the viewers who enjoy these kind of things (like me).

Diesel's act as Riddick is a little more macho than in "Pitch Black", but it still doesn't disturb the rest of the movie. He also gets beaten up some, which evens things out.

Karl Urban great in his role as Lord Vaako.

I'm not the biggest fan of Vin Diesel, but I have to say I was really impressed with Pitch Black. And I've got this movie waiting for me at home, so I'm hoping it will be just as good.

The only three reasons I didn't give this movie a full five stars was 1) The beginning was kind of 'fuzzy,' Twohy should have made everything as if this movie wasn't a sequel. 2) There should have been more character development, and a few characters had 'flat' personalities, and 3) There should have been more information of the Necromongers' beliefs.

Other than that this is an amazing movie!

Pitch Black was awsome, Riddick is just as good. I rekon that Vin Diesel is the absolute best ani-hero ever and his character Riddick, the Murdurer on the run, is one of my all time favorites.
