I watched this movie without subtitles so i missed some of the arabic dialogue. However, this allowed me to study the acting and kind of get a feeling of what was going on through their body language. I didn't think the movie was as good as the critics raved but it was entertaining. It reminds me of movies like The Insider, which mix politics and suspence to the best of the ability. I have to give this a second viewing to get a better feeling.
If there had been subtitles when people weren't speaking english, that would have helped. But I guess it was an artistic choice, or something.
I wasn't expecting this to be anything more than the almost fashionable political drama of the likes of Traffic. Indeed, in style and plot and storyline devices, the two films are very similar with only details relating to the actual topic that differs.
In both, we have various sides/stories of the people at different levels that form the story and in both, the range of the involvement of the various parties is what makes this film interesting.
But this is so much more watchable than Traffic was. Where Traffic was without doubt a film that you have to work at watching this is one that filters out a lot of the smaller aspects and gets right into the meat of it.
This is what makes it a better to watch film. It is also something that makes it weaker as a statement. On the one hand, it gives an almost typical Hollywood style political statement but then again, by skipping on some of the more human aspects of the story events, you don't get the same level of grit as you do in something like traffic.
Top notch performances from all the cast who are lucky in that they all have meaty roles to play with. Whereas in Traffic, there are definite lead roles in each of the stories, here you get more of a feeling that all the roles are equal and are there to serve the story telling.
Worth a watch even if this isn't your normal cup of tea.
i just couldnt get into it...i made it an hour and got distracted...too much going on and nothing tied together in a timely manner...
An interesting political drama with plenty of actors and many storylines but the result is a bit dissapointing. The movie is too long with many details which made sometimes very hard to follow so you may easily lose your interest. The general plot of the movie is very important for me at least (since I live in the heart of the events) because it analyzes many political actions made by governments benefiting from the chaos in the Middle East (whether they are foriegn governments or even Middle Eastern governments). Anyway, the cast gave good performances especialy Clooney and Amr Waked, the Egyptian actor who played Sheik Mohamed, some scenes were well made like the tortutring secne and finally may be some other movies having multiplots like Crash and Babel is way better than this one but Syriana stills watchable.
If youve read most of my recent reviews you would probably agree that i am not the most broad minded individual. In fact, many movies i have a strong distaste for. This however is not that case, i do enjoy a wider range of movie Genres, and Syrianna has striked my attention. It seems like an interesting movie tht would leave you befuddled, but somewhat pleased with the outcome, and also leave you thinking about it long after youve seen it. That happened to me with "Lord Of War", and this looks to do the same with different viewpoints and a unique angle.
Personally , I just didn't like it.. I thought the whole presentation was wrong and the caption in English on the screen took away from the movie,,
