"They all deserve to die. Tell you why, Mrs. Lovett, tell you why! Because in all of the whole human race, Mrs. Lovett, there are two kinds of men and only two. There's the one staying put in his proper place and one with his foot in the other one's face. Look at me, Mrs Lovett! Look at you! No, we all deserve to die... Even you, Mrs Lovett, even I! Because the lives of the wicked should be made brief. For the rest of us death will be a relief. We all deserve to die... And I'll never see Johanna, no I'll never hug my girl to me... FINISHED!"
No place like london!!! There was a barber and his wife.... And they we're beautiful.... Poor thing... Poor thing... Nothings gonna harm you! Not while I'm around!
The Demon Barber what a superb Broadway show turned musical movie. Every role in this film was well done even with the suprise of Sacha Cohen being thrown into a couple of the songs talk about a surprise. Angela Lansbury would be so proud haha well maybe she was surprised as well but theres no doubt that from the characters (Rickman by the way is always an absolute bad guy) to the music I even appreciated the vintage like effects. The only thing I would have to comment on as far as an opportunity would be the blood yes I said it I know the feel that they were trying to grasp onto as far as the whole film in general but really ? .. Seriously I shouldnt have to actually question something like that. Should I ?
i always love and admire to all Tim Burton masterpiece or his magnum opus. Burton's humor is part and parcel of his sheer brilliance, as alwys my fav, mr Depp is intense and positively unforgettable. All performances are electric, and the film draws us deeper and deeper with every moment into its stunning blend of the grotesque and the undeniably beautiful..
Once you get used to the Musical-styled bits, it's a very well done work by Tim Burton. The fake blood is slightly comical and amusing and the adaptation they used was perfect.
I was impressed by the dark world and the delightful characters as well as the blend of musical numbers and the black and bloody humor. I loved the cast and man did this movie fit the directing style of Tim Burton. Here he combined the strangest, and therefor strongest elements of all that makes his movies special and made something that is so rare as a truly unique blend.
If it weren't for the load of unnecessary use of gore and some of the singing voices I would give this show five stars. It is truly a beautiful piece well told by Tim Burton. And although Carter had an iffy voice she played Mrs. Lovett exceptionally well. As for Johnny...AMAZING! His voice maybe was 100% cut out for Sweeney Todd but he did a wonderful job. If you don't mind blood definitely watch this show
The musical numbers really slowed down the story. There are some good moments and fine performances but the singing was a distraction, it just didn't seem to fit in.
Any film advertised as a musical is going to elicit some skepticism from me, even one that has been directed by Tim Burton. Even as I realized this isn't exactly "My Fair Lady" or "The Sound of Music," I could not help but feel some doubt about whether I would like this movie. That said, I was able to overlook the crater-sized plot-holes and the annoying tendency for characters to suddenly begin singing (as a required musical convention, of course) and appreciate the artistry on display. Depp's performance, in particular, must be appreciated, since he is required to sing and act all at the same time. His singing may not rival his acting, but overall his creepy expressions while he is singing does enhance the presentation of Todd's decline into madness. Without question, this is Tim Burton's bleakest movie to date. There really isn't any humorous set-ups or tender moments like those found in his other collaborations with Depp. Todd is a sympathetic character to a point, but his vengeful bent and the indiscriminate killings that he undertakes make him basically an unredeemable figure as well. Carter's role is every bit as demanding as Depp's, and she proves more than up to the task set before her. But again, I found it hard to pity Mrs. Lovett, seeing that she is quite obviously an obsessive psychopath who exhibits no conflicts about assisting a murderer. The graphic violence will bother some, and the last hour is quite bloody, so be forewarned if you do not already have some idea about what awaits beforehand. Not close to being one of Burton's best, but also well above some good movies he has made, and I must confess, a few of those songs are just catchy enough to have gotten stuck in my head since the evening I watched this.
I'll admit I was incredibly apprehensive about Sweeney Todd because I'm not really down with musicals. Even if Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are involved. And its not because its a clinical fact that they drain you of heterosexuality points but because people bursting into song is one of the most annoying things on the planet. But for some reason its cool when Gene Kelley does it. Don't know what to tell you. But as far as Sweeney Todd goes I was surprised at how much I didn't hate it and how little I was annoyed. It looked incredible, the singing wasn't bad and I wasn't sent me into a blind rage. And dare I say that some of the songs were... catchy. But where this movie does lose points is with the characters and plot that needed way more fleshing out. I know its a musical and a lot of musical fans MAY BE but necessarily aren't idiots but do they really need to be treated that way? Other than that the acting was very good except for that little kid who really blew. Sweeney Todd's worth checking out if you think your stomach can handle it. And I'm not talking about the mass quantities of blood either.
Depp is Excellent and so is Carter. It's a Tim Burton film so what to expect? If the blood hadn't been so unreal I would have been scared to death. Great movie and music. Watch it!
I usually don't watch musicals but I took a chance on this one. And it was a waste of time. The singing, songs and story were all bad. THe special effects where cheesey. I would say to only watch this movie if you want to find some humor in it, but don't expect much from it.
This is a very entertaining and well put together movie, as is usually the case with Tim Burton films. Even if you are like me, and do not usually enjoy musicals, this one's worth making an exception for. The usual whimsical tone and over-the top corniness you may find in an Andrew Lloyd Weber styled musical is replaced by Burton's signature gloomy and macabre visual style. Also, there are no punches pulled when it comes to the story. The villains are not just evil, they are outlandishly cruel, and the violence depicted is not just gory, but gratuitously bloody. If ever there was a director who could do this story justice on the silver screen, it is Tim Burton, and luckily for us, he has done just that.
This movie has some surprising things to say about the relationship between revenge and justice, and the destructive effects that a blind, misguided love can have.
The singing could have been better... But still, a fun (in a really morbid kind of way) and impressive appearance by Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
Alot of dang singing....and thats just first 30 minutes. Hand it to Tim Burton though...he makes for great entertainment. Whenever Johnny Depp steps into his world...A film you cant turn away from.
A uniquely well-tailored plot! This violent musical is a fresh experience to me, particularly because of its dark layout and nice songs. Besides those bloody and breathtaking killings, some scenes are quite cheerful and laughable (like the deposits of bodies). Tim Burton makes use the devastating ending to illustrate how hatred poisons one's mind which leads to an irreversible tragedy, and I am totally in shock to see it ends like that!
