When I heard of this version I was terribly excited about it. When I finally saw it I was somewhat disappointed. The fact that a lot of Donner's original material was either lost or incomplete necessitated the blending of his material and Richard Lester's material, which makes this version shoddy at best when compared with the original. Some excellent "new" scenes have been added (including CG-enhanced scenes with Marlon Brando which was not seen in the original) but a number of original scenes have been cut, most notably during the fight between the Kryptonians and the Army in the midwest. I was uncomfortable with the change in the ending as well. Donner has Superman go back in time again, which I think isn't all that dramatic or credible when you remember that he did it in the first film. To be fair though, I didn't think his "mind wipe" of Lois in Lester's version was all that convincing either. Final thought: worth seeing for a Superman fan and still a great film but it loses a star when you consider the potential Donner had to make it perfect.
P.S. - He took away the scene with Superman returning the American flag to the White House! I LOVED that scene. Damn you, Donner.
The movie itself is not complete. But the exercise in its assembly, the exceptional footage that has finally seen the light of day, and the definitive story of what happened here - that denied us all of what would have been an amazing sequel - is worth the watch. Exceptional presentation, well worth the time.
This movie is a better version than the Richard Lester version. It fits better into Superman Returns and sets it up well. The scenes that were added were well worth it and made more sense. So if you like Superman you should get this.
Just as good as Lester version and in some scenes much, much better.
For instance the destruction of The Phantom Zone releasing Zod, Ursa and Non and the absence of the plastic incasing S icon that Superman throws from his chest.
Also the siege of The White House was much better than the rushed cut-up one in the Lester version.
I thought the scene in the very beginning where Lois is suspicious about Clack Kent being Superman was done much better as well as the way she really finds out.
Superman: "You realize of course if you'd been wrong, Clark Kent would have been killed"
Lois: "With Blanks?"
DOH!
One big problem with this version was the final scene after Superman turns back time. The diner scene at the end. This was stupid as he turned back time and that scene made no sense.
Best line of the film...
The President:
"Oh GOD"
Zod:
"...Zod"
With a patronizing voice.
Every bit as good as the original, though because Donner directed both the first and second ones it's intended as one movie. Watching both, you can really tell the difference in quality. Apparently Richard Lester was just a pawn to finish the film the producers' way and it's noticeable. Donner wants nothing less than the best - his way - and he gets it done here. One of the best superhero movies made, but let's forget about 3 and 4, shall we?
this is certainly better because its darker and gotten ridden of tyhe cheesy camp elements!thank god for having footage of marlon brando!the WB made the right decision in giving richard donner the chance to cut together his vision of SUPERMAN II
MUCH better than the horrid attempt that Richard Lester gave us. This film is the definition of two things - 1/ Why the Salkinds and Lester aren't making movies anymore, and 2/ How this series could have evolved into a truly epic, respectful film arch had the same cast and crew remained. If I had to sum up in one reason why this film is superior, then it would be this - the bullcrap magic and hocus-pocus of the Lester version is non-existant in this, and the film is strengthened ten fold even just from that.
