Plot: Carmen and Juni Cortez will soon find out that their favorite bedtime story, "The Spies Who Fell in Love," is really the story of their parents. So begins this affable fantasy, a James Bond adventure ...( read more read more... )for wee ones with all the trimmings. When Dad and Mom (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) mess up their first mission after coming out of retirement, their kids must come to the rescue, equipped with some cool gadgets. The Cortez family gets involved in a bizarre plot hatched by a Pee-wee Herman-type entertainer named Fegan Floop (a wonderfully hammy Alan Cumming) that's as giddy as it is ridiculous. Needless to say there is plenty of derring-do concerning long-lost uncles, goofy monsters, double agents, evil robots, look-alikes, and energized chases. Did we mention the gadgets? Although Banderas and Gugino make terrific impressions, the movie is carried (as it should be) by the younger Cortezes, winningly played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara. Who would have thought an action/horror studio (Dimension) and writer-director Robert Rodriguez had this pleasing family film up their sleeves? Rodriquez (who produced with his wife Elizabeth Avellán) seemed to be mired in cheesy horror films but here breaks out by capitalizing on the talent that gave him instant status with his debut, El Mariachi (1992). Spy Kids has plenty of verve but never swerves into potty humor (OK, there is one good potty joke) or wicked gunplay. All 7-year-olds should have a film as fun as this in their movie-going lives. --Doug Thomas

For kids, and adults wanting to stay a kid, only. Then again Carla Gugino and Antonio Banderas are appealing and Tony Shalhoub makes for a great villain.

I watched this. It was cute-ish. Sometimes you just have to watch things to numb your brain. This one is great for that.

This film not only says these words bluntly, but also imaginatively illustrates how to keep a family together, though the fun may distract you from these themes. A second viewing may help them become more apparent.

The production values are very high, although several set and story elements are boldly fantastic.

An added benefit for a select few: if you are a father with once young, impressionable children who in the ancient past watched "Pee Wee's Playhouse", this film will be especially satisfying.

The casting for Spy Kids is top drawer. The children, perhaps not the leading performers of the century, are completely well suited for this film – I wouldn't change them for anyone. (You shouldn't either.) The parents are also wonderful. And watch for several other familiar performers – my family are particular fans of Tony Shaloub (Minion). You may have seen Tony in "Monk", or "Galaxy Quest" or elsewhere.

Warning – some people have said this movie is dumb. So, if you have no imagination, no appreciation for transcendence or appetite for family unity, if you'd rather throw mud and poke people with sticks, I recommend you stay away. But if you love all that is good, genuinely subtle and clever, too, watch carefully
