one of the greatest films in drug history just watch it and the unrated cut please! you will understand the ones like me who have done drugs are so fucked up in the head
A great film.Really gripping,at times funny,at times shocking and you can feel the characters' paranoia.A great trip into the lives and minds of a group of drud addled friends and the people around them.
pretty good picture of meth users not coke/speed users. To be a swedish director, I have to say it must be the best swedish film ever made.
This movie isnt the greatest, It tripped me out mildly. Mind numbingly simple yet suprising at the same time
So this was a pretty cool story. Sort of what requiem for a dream would have been like on speed. You can tell that the editing techniques are sort of similar, but not as well thought out. The soundtrack, provided by Billy Corgan, was wonderful, definitely helps to set the tone of the movie. Overall, an entertaining flick.. but not rigid enough to truly describe what it's like to be thrown into the life of a speed freak. But indeed, a funny movie. There were some great moments with Leguzama.
All star cast, music by Billy Corgan, what more could you ask for? Another great drug drenched flick that is fast paced and packed full of humor. So many unexpected cameos from Corgan himself to Rob Halford. Then you finally see a role that Eric Roberts lives up to. Mickey Rourke is classic. I laughed at every scene that he was in.
It's been three years since I last screened this movie, so watching it last night and reflecting upon all the horror movies I've been watching, I realize that I've been letting too many movies get away with sloppy scripts. As SPUN demonstrates, a great script is easily achievable if there is any talent behind the effort. This film is more humorous to me now that I've seen the shock moments in the past, and can now view the film more objectively. Rourke is insansely awesome in this role, so much so that when I saw it first 3 years ago, I did not recognize him until the credits rolled. All the acting is top notch here. I really don't know who Brittany Murphy is other than she gets alot of press attention and people say she is overrated as an actress; I disagree based on her performance in this, if she is atrocious at other roles, at least she has "crankhead" to fall back on. Love the cinematography style, the realistic bent of the story and characters.
One has to have thick skin not to be weirded out be this movie; it is, after all, a portrait of meth addicts, and that world accurately translated could never be pretty. Also, the score by Billy Corgan is amazing with special mention of Corgan's band Zwan covering "The Number of the Beast" acoustically, which is the title credits theme. Just a great film, will cause me to relieve some inferior pieces of unjustifiable stars.
"So Fucked Up" highlight:
girl tied to bed for days listening to loud CD player skipping
This movie was probably considered "cool" and "edgy" 5 years ago, but it's mostly just annoying because of those damn quick cuts and those Requiem for a Dream "I'm all drugged up" scenes. To be fair, aside from being irritating, it can also be enjoying. Mickey Rourke is especially a plus to this movie. Nice to see Debbie Harry, too. I guess Schwartzman did this movie before he realized he should stop wasting his time and just work with folks like Wes Anderson.
This movie was kind of like a much more dirty adult version of 'Better of Dead' with no happy ending, mixed with a Trainspotting like message but tabout meth addiction, I had to go take a shower after the film was over.
I think Flixter thinks I have a crush on Brittany Murphy. Maybe I do.
But they shouldn't know that. She comes up more than any actress in recommendations. The film? Yeah, it's pretty good. The soundtrack features a beautiful song by Zwan.
It wasn't a terrible movie, but it was definitely anxiety-inducing and really had no point other than to make you feel sorry for druggie idiots...no real redemptive or lesson-learning moments, since I already feel sorry for those poeple. But Mickey Rourke is a badass.
If it doesn't bother you when a director blatantly rips off another movie, take this one for a spin. It's Requiem for a Dream for the methamphetamine crowd. Not as good, of course, but it's a fun ride. Lots of quick edits, lots of Oliver Stone weird, sweaty, extreme close-ups, and absolutely no substance. It's just a week, or so, in the life of a bunch of speed freaks. Nothing more.
BIlly Corgan contributes some good stuff, via Djali Zwan to the soundtrack and gets in a quick cameo. There's lots of cameos alongside the ensemble cast. Leguizamo's a little over the top, and Mira Sorvino seemed a little stretched, but all in all not too bad. It's a fine line between over-acting and acting like you're freakin' on speed, so I'm not going to complain.
Spun is also surprising explicit in a number of ways: Leguizamo's masturbation scene wearing nothing but a sock; the shot of a little turd splashing in the toilet while Sorvino takes a dump; a girl tied to a bed for pretty much the length of the movie, naked and spread eagle with gaffer's tape over her mouth and eyes forced to listen to a skipping CD the whole time.
There is no moral to the story. Heck, there really isn't any story. It's just one big buzz with events. I don't mind that it's a Requiem for a Dream clone in style, not substance. I would imagine this kind of physical film making via power-edits would be difficult to do, and I think this first time director did a credible job.
Nicely done. Reminds me a lot of Requiem for a dream. It's very well known subject - life of a junky with some great actors.
A hidden gem. One of the most original and stylish films I have seen. It cleverly borrows aspects of its influences and puts its own unique spin (no pun intended) on them.
Another tripped out drug movie, some of the scenes cracked me up, like who ties someone up and leaves them for three days? lol
Akerlund manages to provide a vivid and disturbing film, schwartzman is very impressive, compelling until the end
Utter crap. Aside from a few amusing dark comedy scenes, this film is a waste of time. Half a star is too much.
A meth-fueled rollercoaster ride in the lives of a bunch of tweakers, which essentially goes nowhere. But then that's the point of the movie. It's spread over the course of three sleepless days, so the viewer as well as the characters lose track of time. Through the editing, dialogue, and various situations in the movie, I think the filmmakers did a great job of placing the viewer into the mindset of a speed freak. I like the animation that's integrated into the film in various (appropriate) places too. There's some great characters in the film like John Leguizamo as Spider Mike and his strung-out girlfriend Cookie, played by Mena Suvari. Their dysfunctional relastionship is interesting to watch (and downright funny in some scenes). Ross, played by Jason Schwartzman, is the main character in the movie and is arguably the most grounded person in the film. Though over the course of the three day adventure he becomes just as spun as everbody else. He becomes important in the lives of all the characters primarily because he's the only one who has a car. Mickey Rourke plays "The Cook", and he's great as usual. One of my favorite characters is Frisbee, a black metal-loving tweaker always hanging out at Spider Mike's place. By the way, the video Frisbee's watching in his bedroom when the cops raid his place is the black metal band Satyricon's "Mother North". Check out the full video below:Flixster - Share Movies
Here's a bit of trivia (and probably the reason for the black metal connection); the director, Jonas Akerlund, was drummer for the band Bathory from 1983 to 1984. If you're looking for a drug-related movie that's fairly realistic, but still has a healthy dose of humor, then this should fit the bill. It doesn't delve too deep into the horrors of addiction, so it's not a depressing ride like REQUIEM FOR A DREAM (which is a great film). And it doesn't stray all the way out into the left field of surrealism and paranoia like FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (another great film, by the way). Just be sure to get the unrated "director's cut"version.
Crazy, frenetic film about meth-heads. being in WV I've known a good deal of meth-heads and know that they get paranoid easy. Angry easy. They are easily distracted, but can do the same thing for hours. And they never sleep, eyes sunken in and red as the Devil. This movie touches on all that, but makes it funny and less annoying than actually being around these creepy people. So kudos for that, Spun.
Great performance from Jason Schwartzman. It was nice to see him try something different. He has incredible range. I am really tired of seeing Brittany Murphy playing the same drugged out tramp. John Leguizamo was great as usual. This direction of this movie reminded me allot of The Salton Sea. Check that one out if you liked Spun.
Incredible screenwriting debut by my buddy/roommate Wil de los Santos. Miss you Wil, where ever you are! Manic, fearless filmmaking by first-time director Jonas Akerlund (of "Smack My Bitch Up" fame). Guiness Book of World Record holder for most edits. Knockout performances from Jason Schwartzman, Brittany Murphy, John Leguizamo, Mickey Rourke, Mena Suvari and Debbie Harry. Brutally honest and hilarious renderings of meth addled psychobabblings and distopia. A classic look at the "Big Sleazy" (LA) valley culture and the Draino cycle of downward mobility and tweakerism.
All the actors on here do a fantastic job, great soundtrack, and the little animation parts, with the fast forwarding after each hit, is phenomenal.
Muy provocativa y hasta perturbadora por la forma en que muestra la miseria de los personajes, pero buena. Aún así no llega a ser lo que es "Requiem for a Dream"
