"Speed Racer is a young man with natural racing instincts whose goal is to win The Crucible, a cross-country car racing rally that took the life of his older brother, Rex Racer. Speed is loyal to the family business, run by his parents Pops and Mom. Pops designed Speed's car, the Mach 5. The owner of Royalton Industries makes Speed a lucrative offer, Speed rejects the offer, angering the owner. Speed also uncovers a secret that top corporate interests, including Royalton, are fixing races and cheating to gain profit. With the offer to Speed denied, Royalton wants to ensure that Speed will not win races. Speed finds support from his parents and his girlfriend Trixie and enters The Crucible in a partnership with his one-time rival, Racer X, seeking to rescue his family's business and the racing sport itself. "
MY APPRAISAL
Damn it's hard not to like Speed Racer since it's totally irresistable. Doesn't everyone loves a good visual effects and car racing?
Racing's in our blood. Like for Pops, it isn't just a sport. It's way more important than that. It's like a religion. And in our house, the major sponsors are kind of like the devil. I don't mean to offend you, sir, and I do appreciate your offer, but after all we've been through, I don't think this kind of deal is for me.

I have to say that I think that Speed Racer is one of the worst films of the year so far if not of all time and there are many reasons for this. Reason number one: the acting was absolutely dreadful apart from John Goodman. Reason number two: The direction was really bad but was quite decent in racing scenes, the plot was appauling and so was the writing of the film. I have to say that this film has one of the weakest plots that I have ever seen and reason number three: because it felt like it didnt mean anything to anyone involved in it. I was really hoping that this film would be great but I was disappointed with it. In fact, I was devestated because I was really hoping to like it but I didnt at all. I mean, what a stupid name Speed Racer is! Who would call their son that? It is embarassing for him to have a name like that and also because of the names of his parents: Pop Racer and Mom Racer. How pathetic is that! Its like being named Brill Player or something like that in football haha! Pathetic I know but needed to say it.
I cant believe Emile Hirsch was in a masterpiece like Into The Wild and was then in a terrible film like this. I have always admired Christina Ricci in her films but I dont really like her as much now because she was in this film. I loved her performances in Sleepy Hollow and Monster but she is being in some rubbish films. I am presuming that Penelopé will be awful too even though I havent seen it yet. John Goodman was quite funny in a slight way but was quite a stupid character. But mostly I cant believe an Oscar winning actress and a great actress like Susan Sarandon was in a film like this. She wasnt really very good either. She acted like she had no clue what she was doing.
The direction from the Wachowski Brothers was pretty bad really because after doing The Matrix trilogy, they are losing their taste in the films that they are doing. I think the only films that they have directed are The Matrix films, Speed Racer and a film called Bound. On the other hand, I did think the directing during the action scenes were quite good. It was badly written by the Wachowski Brothers. I was really hoping that it will be well written just like The Matrix films are but was greatly disappointed.
There are a few believeable qualities that this film does have and that is because of the racing car moments. It is obviously a fantasy film but can be a loving film for little kids because of this. I mean, I love kids films but this one was too kiddie and comical for me. Also, kids will love it too because of its comic uses with cars and their fast speed and what type and colour they are. The visual effects were realistic indeed which I was certainly expecting.
I couldn?t feel any love between Speed and Trixie at all because both acting was terrible. Even though the words were love, it felt like they were brother and sister more than anything and also because Trixie was in a lot of scenes with Speeds parents, I got the impression that Speeds girlfriend lived with them.
The sound effects are absolutely amazing in this film which is one of the few things that I loved and pretty much sums up the one star in this film along with the visual effects.
Despite how much I hated this film, I do think it could be an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound because I did like the sound effects in it which is I find really good about the Wachowskis. It probably wont but it could be a possibility that it could.
This film is a disgrace to 2008 summer blockbusters as far as Im concerned. It rips-off Star Wars, off PIXARs Cars even though I didnt really like that very much. Also, it was on for a very long time and went on for a bit too long for my liking. It was like it wanted to drag attention to people but it didn?t draw my attention at all really. The story was really lame as it says earlier in my review. Despite of how bad this film is, I have seen worst films this year like 10,000 B.C. and Be Kind Rewind. Cant believe it is directed by the two guys who created one of the most popular franchises of all time that is The Matrix. It makes the Matrix seem quite bad because the people who made it is the same as the awful film that is Speed Racer. Almost hit one of the worst films of all time list.
i was a bit disappointed with this movie. i was as a child a great fan of the cartoon speed racer, and i guess i was expecting about the same. i personally think they should had kept this movie as animated. this is horrible that such great actors as john goodman, susan saradon and christina ricci had to act in this extremely too bright of a movie. the special effects are great, that is probably why i rated it 3 stars. but thank god i did not waste my money by going to see this in the movie theater.
This was an enjoyable high-octane re-imaging of the American version of this classic series. I enjoyed the stunning action nostalgia and way this film was shot.
Don't quite know what to make of this one...I was entertained, but something is off-kilter. Maybe it's the over-elaborate cartoon cgi blended with live action, or it could be some of the stilted acting because of it. Not sure, but it was enjoyable and worth a rent.
A freakishly stylized WACHOWSKI adaptation to an old shitty cartoon.
Sure the CGI effects are AWESOME but the PAINFULLY LACKING PLOT and TERRIBLE ACTING will make you want to SPEED through the crap just to get to what little action there is.
WACHOWSKI fans and CHILDREN under the age of 10 might enjoy this but everyone else should just STEER CLEAR. FANS ONLY!
An awesome fun movie! I enjoyed all the bright colors and action. The different races were thrilling. I liked the futuristic cars which could spin, flip, jump, defy gravity and release different weapons and defenses. I liked the different racers with their assortment of costumes and personalities. The techno music was pounding and catchy. A real ride! The characters were cartoonish with some family backstory thrown in. The kid and the monkey ruined some nice romantic scenes; but they were mostly harmless and amusing. The editing was creative and colorful; I like how they superimposed characters over pulsating chromatic patterns and used people and objects to wipe between shots. It's a unique movie, unlike any other and I loved it.
I was never a fan of this character and i tryed like hell 2 hate diz movie, but it is a fantastic family film with an actual story and message 2 it. A pleasant surprise im happy 2 say and i was very impressed. Its just a fun a movie
I remember the theme song from i was a kid, and thats about all i can remember. It was an expensive movie, and didnt make back the money in box office records.
I did not expect too much from this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. Any film that can immediately hook and make me cry within the first 10 minutes forces me to highly recommend it to others.
I never saw this movie but I watched the first 5 minutes of it and sure enough like the critics were saying it made me sick...literally. The flying whirling crazy colors and over the top camera work makes the viewer feel like they're watching a bad home movie that makes them dizzy and ill
Good clean fun for all the family (unless you're epilectic, in which case you'll be convolting on the floor). Stupendously fast racing, sillyness, bright flashing colours and christina ricci - what else do you want?
WTF!? Just finished watching this flick.. it was actually more like a child flick.. =( I'm really disappointed.. =( A lot looked so screened and computerized.. so it actually didn't look too good.. =S Maybe because of the clear background colors.. making it so "unreal".. it felt a little like "Spy Kids" or what ever the children's action flick is called.. =(
Let me just start this by saying that if you are prone to seizures, then you should probably have your medication with you before you watch this movie. It's not terrible, but with the quick lighting changes, the scene transitions that occur more often than the main storyline, and the fact that Trixie wears pink all of the time that is so bright your eyes tear up whenever you see her, the strain on your eyes is going to be evident. The story was alright, but there were non-sequitors (espcially with the kid brother and monkey) that made me go "WTF?". In any case, it's not a terrible movie, but it doesn't really follow anything from the cartoon version of a story and, as mentioned before, your eyes might hurt. Oh, and as a final note, the cinematography looked like if you took the actors/actresses and put them in the world of "Mirrors Edge". If you've not yet seen the trailer or played the demo, I suggest looking at that. In any case, most of the world of "Speed Racer" is very cartoony and very bright which almost looks out of place for the actors, which can be very distracting from everything else going on.
WOW! I spent the car races glued to the end of my seat and have developed another crush on a fictional man. This one's name is 'Racer X'. What can I say...he's tall, dark and brooding! Sound like anyone else we know? Loved the racing, colors, actions. >Go, Speed Racer, Go, Speed Racer, Go, Speed Racer, Go ! (yeah it stucks)
