Plot: Perky teen starlet Hilary Duff wholeheartedly embraces the kind of earnest innocence all parents wish their daughters had. In Raise Your Voice, Terri Fletcher (Duff, A Cinderella Story, ...( read more read more... )The Lizzie McGuire Movie) yearns to go to a prestigious music conservatory in Los Angeles. Her father (David Keith, An Officer and a Gentleman) won't let her because L.A. is a bad place--but her loving mom (Rita Wilson) and kooky aunt (Rebecca DeMornay, Risky Business) sneak her away. Once there, she gets a sassy roommate-of-color, geeky cool friends, a snooty rival, and a sexy British boyfriend (Oliver James, What a Girl Wants). Of course, all conflicts with family and friends come to a head at a big competition at which Terri rediscovers herself. Formulaic?Yes (see also Fame, Dirty Dancing, and School of Rock). Bland? Yes. Will preteen girls enjoy it anyway? Maybe, because Duff plays it so sincere. --Bret Fetzer

IM a big fan of hilary duff and this movie was not a let down on her part i could feel the emotions i cried at the end of the movie espcially the part where his brother that he loved died and she blames her self with the "what ifs" but somehow she found happiness in something she's passionate about even thought it took time and someone to have confident in her..
so next time you go to your local blockbuster make sure to check out raise your voice you won't be dissapointed.

I don?t know what I expected when I started watching this film, everything about it screams shit but I took the advice of a friend and watched it anyway. It?ll be the last time I listen to that friend about movies. I suppose the first clue would have to be Hilary Duff. Just because she can sing relatively decently does not mean that she should be thrown into every film that involves a character singing. I believe they couldn?t have changed her voice anymore even if it was possible. I don?t think she sung one note properly for the duration of the film. Her character is annoying and you don?t feel sorry for her even if her brother did die. I can?t stand whiney characters and hers just takes the biscuit. The rest of the actors in the film give poor performances so when Duff fails to carry the film, falling back on the rest of the cast doesn?t work because they?re all rubbish as well. The plot isn?t a terrible one and if they characterisation was done to a higher standard, and choice of actors was different, then maybe the film would have had a chance. I heard that Evan Rachel Wood was originally going to play the lead, which was a much better choice, but what you going to do. If it was her, there would be something else wrong with the film.

sugary goodness... the overcome-it-all-by-letting-go-of-the-pain formula with a touch of teen romance and a dash of away-from-home setting still works for this tween type movie... got me through a overnight hospital stay

Agh, this movie kind of bothered me. She lies to her dad the whole movie and gets rewarded in the end, and yet they do a great job of making you sympathize with HER, and feel all inspired and stuff anyway... I guess it was just "okay".

I was caught of guard on what a great movie this is. I think it's the best work of Hilary's so far. I absolutely admire the music in there. Dana Davis is sooo cool at the violin. Everyone is amazingly talented and I really admire that.

The casting is great and the storyline is not bad. Bit cheesy at times, but overall enjoyable.

Okay, goddamn it, I watched it! But fuck, it was 2005, fucking hell.

Anyway. This is not a film as much as a business deal for Ms. Duff-- and it serves the same damn morals we're used to get in every 'inspirational' teen movie. But there is a little something that sets it apart-- clearly NOT Hilary's frustrating white-bread acting style-- a somewhat fresh cast and a reasonably realistic take on artistic authenticity. This film IS about music, and to the tween generation, it's a solid value to be taught.

So, in terms of filmmaking, it's pure fucking soap-- but I guess it serves some sort of purpose. Good.

Probably Hilary's best movie as it had a good storyline and even though it was a tad predictable it's still a good flick.

The composition of the film itself was not that bad. Duff plays the character perfectly because this is the kind of thing she does best. It might not have been the most memorable but it was pretty decent. It got to be a bit anticlimactic towards the end, though.

Didn't think I'd like it much, I can watch Hilary Duff but I'm not a massive fan. I got it out to see if Oliver James would sing (he has a great voice) and actually really enjoyed it, although it's so predictable, I even cried how ashemed am I? Crying at a Hilary Duff film. I love the song at the end and I just love John Corbett in anything.

The song at the end of the movie,"Someone's Watching Over Me" was so touching... i could feel the lyrics swarming all around me even after days of first watching the movie... and the sadness she shows about her brother's death....Hilary's best work till date(apart from her songs, of course)!!!
