Plot: God and man and math: The tawdry meets the Talmudic in this complex thriller about a tortured computer genius trying to beat the stock market.
Claustrofobico e psichedelico, Pi greco è un film girato in bianco e nero di grande intensità. Grezzo ma efficace, ammicca per certi versi al successivo Requiem for a Dream.
ENGLISH: A paranoid and phobic mathematician descends into growing layers of madness, while researching patterns in the number Pi.
The soundtrack plays an important role in creating an insane atmosphere, with its obsessive electronic sounds, and there are some intense acting moments (especially the meetings between the mathematician and his old professor).
It is a pity that the director indulges too much in long and repetitive depictions of some actions of the main character (such as taking pills, suffering from headache, crushing insects,...), which break the otherwise hectic pace of the movie.
If you ever wondered what having a surrealist nightmare in math class after reading The Da Vinci Code was like then this is the film for you.
'Mathematics is the language of nature', i take an interest in movies that portray symptoms of epophenia.
''There will be no order, only chaos.''
A paranoid mathematician searches for a key number that will unlock the universal patterns found in nature.
Faith in Chaos.
Sean Gullette: Maximillian Cohen
Max is a mathematician who tries to find the perfect number/equation to life, to everything. Upon finding it, people will do anything to get what he knows.
Beautiful sounds and music, fantastic camera work are a few aspects Pi has to offer. The whole flashes, views through keyholes, the ants, the black and white filming intensifies the ordeal that is Pi.
I liked the Jewish lettering and numbering system. Was especially fascinating with some awe defining comparisons and links to certain symbolic aspects within the Torah.
Darren Aronofsky has crafted a superb, psychological, analytical movie that spirals out of control to dizzying heights. Paranoia and madness soaked.
Sean Gullette portrays Max in such a believable fashion. Incredible.
Very meaningful quotes for instance, the following examples:
''When i was a little boy my mother told me not to stare into the sun.
So once when i was six i did''.
''1. Mathematics is the language of nature.
2. Everything around us can be represented and understood through numbers.
3. If you graph these numbers, patterns emerge. Therefore: there are patterns everywhere in nature.''Some interesting ambient music from some surreal groups too like Aphex Twin, orbital, Ront Size, Massive attack, David Holmes, Autechre and Clint Mansell.
Pi is perfected in it's capturing of numbers and the mixture of faith and religion. Even in religions and nature numbers are in everything, which begs the idea that God, the big everything, or whatever you believe, patterns are in everything, reflecting how numbers are everywhere.
The whole film is surreal, beautiful and shot so differently yet originally. Reminds me of the Silent Hill video games on parts the way it messes with your head and stretches your fear of the unknown. Also is similar to Taxi-driver how its main guy seems to plummet and be consumed by craziness and chaos. How you get to the stage where you snap and there's no going back.
What begins as an obsession to beat the stock market slowly transcends into something altogether higher and pivotal yet dangerous.
Watch immediately if you are into deep films because Pi certainly is near the top of the pile.
Darren Aronofsky, I see what he's trying to achieve here. In all his films. Has to be watched again and again to take into account all it's deeper messages and meanings.
Simply Amazing, spirals into perfection and infinity like it's chaotic numeric, faithful subject matter.
Faith is indeed in chaos, a myriad of God, man and math.
The first feature movie by Darren Aronofsky, one of the very few bright American directors still working today.Complex, disturbing, sophisticated movie about a mathematician's attempt to "understand the world". Does the world really follow a pattern?!
We haven't seen Aronofsky's groundbreaking film yet.His debut clearly presents the effects of mystery and fantasy genres mingled in one speciment of cinematic quiz.Maths and theory colliding.
Brilliant, high-concept, hyperkinetic, and heart-stopping. Still my favorite movie ever. The stark black-and-white imagery, the music, everything is perfect. I can watch this any time and never get bored.
A beautiful black & white film about something I or you don't really understand. It's a film for Vessel of God to watch.
Pi is an awesome film made by a great director! Even if you're not into mathematics, you will like it, i'm telling you. The lead role is nicely played from A to Z, i was almost sitting on the edge of my seat throughout the motion picture. The music is also very good and fits perfectly the weird ambiance of the whole movie.
not really that good. some good visuals, but other than that, a pointless whimper of what good have been a good film.
A really messed up movie. So, of course I'm going to give it a high rating. Again the cinematography in another one of Darren's films is amazing.
Neurotic, black& white search for what lies beneath reality...a pattern?God?doesn't really matter if you're not looking for a philosophic essay(which this movie is not).Halfway between hallucinations caused by headaches and reality the protagonist finds himself persecuted by nightmares, headaches and organizations that want the formula...absolutely bright thriller, with suspenseful claustrophobic direction.
"I have discovered (*puts on spectacles*), according to my calculations, that 'anti-derivative' and 'anti-Christ' have the same prefix. I will make a movie involving mathematics and the metaphysical and show everyone what I learned at Harvard. I will become famous; you can worship me then. Yay me."
My Aronofsky rant was in response to the rancor that I had for his films following "Pi" - I still can't get over them. That aside, though, I should mention that this film is one of the best film debuts I've seen. This Aronofsky guy is pretty talented; I just hope that he stays reluctant to filming the hegemoniously toxic films that are related to Hollywood. Aronofsky better comply.
Intentionally filmed in a dark, noire style... with a 16mm hand-held video-tape camera that was expanded up to the 35mm standard, all in Black and White, this gritty, dark surreal film about the nature of numbers.
Pi in particular, will take you on a journey you had no idea you were going to take.
Sean Gullette makes an outstanding performance - accompanied by captivating score that never seizes to amaze me.
But the basic plot of a man, anti-sociable genius, struggling to discover the answer to one of the universe, the greatest mysteries... will he find the answer?
Be warned, the crazy dealings of a man searching beyond, stretching the boundary of the mind and finding the magic two-hundred sixteen digits: that some claim to be the he answer to the stock Market crash, while others think it's god name.
You might want to watch this film three or four more times in a row.
If you liked A Beautiful Mind WATCH THIS! The Ending is a minor let-down.
PS: You don't need to be mathematician to understand this masterpiece.
LA Weekly | Manohla Dargis
A triumph of low-end production design, shot in sizzling, solarized black and white, and driven by a propulsive, insinuating score, Pi is a horror movie that makes you think and an indie film that makes you squirm.
I was little disappointed?
That film feels incomplete in some way. Maybe because the blood was black? Maybe for some other reasons?
And Pi? Why Pi?
Just because it has to do with Mathematics?
my all time favorite film, detailing the descent into madness and paranoia that can come from obcession with order and perfection, combined with cripiling lonliness. The soundtrack and the black+white shots only heighten the mood of tension, and in the end, realizes if the cost of absolute knowledge is truely worth the price
Visually impressive with its distinct lack of colour. It doesn't take a mathematical genius to enjoy this film's darkness and light.
Totally insane and surreal little brilliant masterpiece by Mr. Aronofski, unbelievable at moments but undeniably awesome.
94/100
Darren Aronofsky's feature debut. And a really interesting film. I was always rubbish at maths, still am to this day, yet number theory fascinates me, as does this film. Great acting and the film looks incredible in stark black and white. A great story and great acting. A glimpse of the genius that is to come from Aronofsky. Very fitting score and use of music by Clint Mansell, once again.
Aronofsky creates a great movie with practically no money. The low budget shows but just adds to the atmosphere.

Infamous Hugo:
"A bit more interesting thjan Requiem for a Dream in my opinion but it fails at keep the attention until the end like Aronosky's previous film."
Pi was his first movie.
I thought this movie was pretty good, a bit phsycological and dramatic at the same time. A good start for the filmmaker Darren Aronofsky.
