The warm and funny adventure leads her to realize the most important life lesson, "I like myself the way I am." Penelope Wilhern (Christina Ricci), born to wealthy socialites (Catherine O'Hara and Robert E. Grant), is afflicted by the Wilhern spell that can only be broken when she finds love. Hidden away in her family's estate, the lonely girl meets a string of suitors in her parent's futile attempt to break the curse. Each eligible bachelor is enamored with Penelope and her sizable dowry; until her curse is revealed. Lemon (Peter Dinklage), a mischievous and eager tabloid reporter wants a photograph of the mysterious Penelope and hires Max (James McAvoy) to pose as a prospective suitor to get the shot. The handsome down-on-his luck gambler finds himself falling for Penelope, but not wanting to disappoint her or to expose his surreptitious ways, he decides to disappear. Fed up by his latest betrayal and determined to live life on her own terms, Penelope breaks free from her family and ventures into the world alone. She finds adventure with Annie, her first friend (Reese Witherspoon) and becomes the person she was meant to be.

the story was great & the actors pulled it off . i think that the running & screaming was a little over the top . i have seen plenty of UGLIER women than her , & that without a pig nose !!!!!! sad but true .
i think that it is a lovely film & good for all families & for pretty much anyone .

08-31-08 --Even though this movie wasn't directed by Tim Burton it is still such a Burton/Ricci movie. Maybe a little lighter than any Burton creation but still remeniscent. This movie seemed like it went fast. Not much happens. Pretty much everything you see in the trailer but "extended". Definately a good watch.

Penelope was a very good and cute movie all at the same time. This review is coming from a guys point of view. When I had first seen the trailer to this movie I was expecting just what I got out of this movie when I had seen it. This movie is not disappointing at all. This movie to me like inspired me to actually not be afraid of the world we live in. It showed you to just get out there and live life to the fullest before it's to late. This movie had an excellent story to it because no matter what you look like it a guy should still be able to fall in love with you. Christina Ricci did a great job playing a girl who was born with a pig snout for a nose. The guy that was meant for her did an excellent job acting as well. I thought they made a cute couple for each other. The direction it was going was to not be afraid of the world and to be yourself. Overall this was a very cute and at some scenes funny. So I think that this movie is for teenagers mostly. So just give it a chance and go see it especially if you like cute romantic teen movies. James McAvoy was great playing the guy who liked Penelope. I don't want to give anything away though so just go see it.

This is a cute movie. I think it is more a child movie, but the life lesson make it more interesting.

A fun fantasy that's a little too heavy on the moral. Ricci is mostly wasted here with little/no development and McAvoy does a bang-up job. The pacing is uneven, but the character spotlight moments make up for it - Dinklage steals ever scene he's in. Worth a rent.

Yeah, it's a simple fairy tale. But it's a simple fairy tale with a great cast. While it is never overly complex, it's certainly watchable for the kid in you.

I will be honest, this movie was fun to watch. I mean, if there were flaws in here, they were lost in the myriad of charming moments inherent in this film itself. I like Ricci's acting in particular, it was fantastic to see it.

Even though the film differed from the book in a few ways, it still made for a very entertaining and visually stimulating movie.

Fantastic tale about self acceptance and self esteem. Perfect for any young girl to see in this perfect image world we live in these days. Witty, dramatic, romantic and charming story, plot and characters. I really liked the chemistry between Christina and James' characters and the companionship/friendship between Reese and Christina's characters. Cute movie, great effects and almost believeable sets. Although, it might have been cooler for the moral of the story if it ended differently. :) Still go rent it!

Very charming little tale without being too cutsie-wootsie. Good message for a family movie and very nice performances by Ricci, Witherspoon (who also produced this film) and Peter Dinklage who is one that always impresses me. But (be still my heart)James McAvoy was an oohhh so fine for this role.

Fantastic and wonderful! Lovely and enchanted! But I got a doubt...if she acepted herself as she was...why her nose was gone? I prefer her as a pig than as a normal girl. Well, its a movie...thats why in EARTH people prefer the beauty knowing that beauty dosnt stay forever..it gets old and dirty...and then dies...and its true...your not beautiful forever...its sad but true. People should accept them as they are, by heart, not cause she or he is handsome or gorgeous or has a great body...hell no. Anyway, great cast, great film, cool and funny...its worth it...yeah it is. Recomend it!

this looks good not only because of the fact that it turns out to be a love story and we all love {L.O.V.E.} But it is a story of compassion. We all need to know of compassion. Christ preached it but we still didn't get it. He preached it through music; trough lyics of other singers voices, but did we get it? No! So lets try and get it when He opens up some whop butt in a movie, this is God's Compassion trying to say no matter what race, no matter what color, no matter what size, no matter what the person did He will still love us and He does. Come on people open your hearts and if not your hearts then your eyes and if not your eyes then at least read what I'm saying and try and understand it. Christ died for you not because it was something He had to do but because He wanted to, it was His compassion for us. God Bless!
