Excellent stuff. a very dreamy and intimate portrayal of adolescence. Didn't fall into any kind of cliche resolution I was expecting and the film is about much more than its central incident. Love the Nino Rota music and the Scorpio Rising-like 8 mm footage of the skateboarding subculture.
A superb, heartrending piece of beauty with great performances (from quite a few actors that are making their debut no less), strong story structure and downright poetic cinematography. Memo to Gus Van Sant: Last Days is forgiven.
heightened realism is the method behind the bold madness of this poetic effort, the ambient sound at once tells of the culture and unconscious lull of adolescence, time and memory fuse in this thoughtful work
Paranoid Park can easily be grouped with director Gus Van Sant's last few experimental films that have similar aesthetics and cinematography among other shared traits (Gerry, Last Days and Elephant).
Occasionally the movie gets pretentious and meandering. It's also interesting and has artistic merit. The story is a murder mystery involving a young skateboarder. He's questioned at the beginning of the movie by a detective regarding the murder at night of a night watchmen at a train station near a skate board track. The main character is caught in a dysfunctional family situation and lives a detached personal life. The plot follows his daily life showing how he copes with the accusations in a very subtle and lingering way. This kind of avant-guard art house film making isn't for everyone. Some scenes are protracted and go on longer than the average hyper active hollywood blockbuster. Probably this type of film will divide people. It will test some other people's patience.
This is a neat film, but I have to admit I have a bit of a bias because it was filmed in Portland, and I like things that are filmed in places I am familiar with. There wasn't a lot to this film, a lot of slow motion shots, but I think it was well done. It's most likely a one timer. I like Gus Van Sant, and I don't really think this is his best film, as nothing comes close to Finding Forrester, but this was an interesting film.
This board looks lonely. Be the first to talk about "Paranoid Park" !
