Plot:
Oliver Parker, a stage and film actor (Hellraiser), made his directorial debut with this scaled-back version of Shakespeare's play about the paranoid Moor, Othello (Laurence Fishburne), and his...( read more

Dude...Branagh plays such a good manipulator. The black general shall not stay with the white woman. Haha...
I didn't think I would like Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh together, but they pulled it off.
"I hate the Moor... And it is thought abroad that 'twixt my sheets, he's done my office. I know not if it be true but I, for mere suspicion in that kind will do as if for surety. He holds me well, the better shall my purpose work on him. Cassio's a proper man. Let me see now- To get his place and to plume up my will in double knavery. How? Hm! How? I have it. It is engendered. Hell and night must bring this monstrous birth to the world's light."
Excellent cast with among others, Laurence Fishburne(Othello), Irčne Jacob(Desdemona), Michael Maloney(Roderigo), Nathaniel Parker (Cassio) and especially Kenneth Branagh as Iago who blows them all away with a knockout performance. Great score by Charlie Mole. A fantastic Shakespeare film directed by Oliver Parker.
this was a great film. not quite the entire original story, but a great film with good acting. the themes in this sory are powerful and the degredation of the likeable othello is dissapointing but interesting to watch.
A fantastic version of the play that shows all the not-so-romantic images of the time period whie remaining faithful to Shakespeare's play.
no offence to the people that like shakespear but im not a shakespear fan. i was forsed into watching this in english. it was quite easy to follow but being middleage english i didn't understand a word they were saying.
Borrows sparingly from Welles' 1952 conception but otherwise an entertaining film with an interesting 20th century reading. Branagh's fascinating act is accompanied by Fishbourne and Jacob's great acting.
LOL i saw it in my grade 11 english classs haha it was alright, LOL the accent was funny !! but stil worth watchin for Shakerpears literary magnificense !!
though Branagh didn't direct, it feels very much like he did. He was an awesome Iago, but Sir Laurence Olivier is the better Othello (Fishburne was mediocre, but still good).
I wanted him to get the girl. Such a beautiful version of Shakespeare's piece. Kenneth Braugh is such a good evil man.
Laurence Fishburne is brillaint. Kenneth Branagh just seems effortless. Although i can't thinking he wants to be Laurence Oliiver
Actually, not a bad adaptation. The only problem is that his ego gets in the way of his character work. It's less Othello than it is Morpheus.
Lawrence Fishbourne has done a better "Othello" than he who set the bar: Lawrence Olivier. The direction and editing are flawless. This is one of Shakespeare best films.
Not the best Shakespeare i've seen... dragged in places and was rather traditional, but still quite enjoyable. the director came up with some fun little things to keep it visually interesting, the cast was quite good. made the story ALMOST seem believable.
A wonderful adaptation of a powerful Shakespeare play. Irene Jacob does a wonderful job at depicting the innocent Desdemona. The role of Iago is masterfully played by Kenneth Branagh, one of the best Shakespearean actors of our time.
We are studying Othello in school these weeks. Although I hate Shakespeare because I couldn't understand his text, I really appreciate this movie - excellent in acting and great direction. This is the best Shakespeare movie I have ever seen~! Hope I could change my bad impression of Shakespeare.
With almost perfection in acting, great direction and a great script what is not to love. This is one of the best Shakespeare movies out there.
Fishburn is brilliant, seeing him in this role, proves his artistry. Watch the movie and understand the Shakespare.
An "R" rating is not necessary for this film ... so you see a flash of tits ... so? Anyway, good take on Shakespeare's play.
Excellent adaptation of this very sad and hard to watch play. I love it but I can't watch it very often. It's too harrowing.
This film is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello. Othello has left his hometown "Venice" to fight against the Turks on the island of Cyprus. During the battle, he was accompanied by his faithful lieutenant, Cassio. As the film opens, Othello is returning to Venice from the long fight against the Turks. With much excitement, he meets with his love, Desdemona.
Iago, Othello's trusted companion, envies Othello's life and plans to ruin it by manipulating Othello into believing that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio and is pregnant with Cassio's child. He arouses Othello's suspicion and jealousy gradually, and then plants Desdemona's handkerchief in Cassio's clothing for Othello to find. When he does, he is convinced of Desdemona's infidelity and, in a rage, decides to kill both her and Cassio.
Really well done. Laurence was exactly what I imagined Othello to be and Iago was awesome in his evilness!
Laurence Fishburnes performance as Othellos isn't really what i had in mind when i was reading the play. I don't think his performance was right for Othello. Kenneth Branagh did an amazing job as Iago. The movie is kind of boring and i never got this bored while reading the play.
