just plain confusing. was there a prequel to this that i missed? or is it supposed to make no sense. some cool effects though.

This film was everything the Hollywood film Underworld wishes it could have been... intelligent, well acted, well scripted... and kinda unsettling at points... It got me hooked on the novels.

If you've read the novel, this film is based on the first of the three stories in the Night Watch book...

Indeed, it's one of few such. The visual style is excellent, with a dark sheen reminiscent.

I loved the battle of wills between good and evil. I also enjoyed seeing the way the Others hide under the surface of the 'normal' Moscow.

With its somersaulting trucks, drafts of quaffable blood, and skies full of digitized ravens, Bekmambetov's movie has every intention of whacking "The Matrix" at its own game

Want to watch it again, but I could not stop falling asleep, and honestly, I wasn't that tired, either.

I couldn't understand this movie. It's a mix of Matrix and some bad horror. Story of light and dark fighting is boring especially in this matrix version...

The visionary clearly wasn't enough here to entertain me. People who haven't read the book didn't understand one bit of what's going on. And people who did - were simply bored.

One of the biggest successes of Russian literature (and now cinema) and one of the few exports that made it to other countries in recent years has quite an interesting take on the eternal battle of good and evil. The look of this fantasy / horror movie is defined by a wild, sometimes odd mix of modern Matrix-esque special effects and every day life of Moscow, which can be positively described as unique, but also causes quite a bunch of WTF moments. Without having read the novel it's still very apparent that the script had to rush a lot into this first movie of three. Apart from those few rather weird, inappropriate and confusing scenes there isn't all that much to complain about this. It's entertaining and adds some new spices into an old genre. It's just not all that impressive either.

My first Russian film! This one seemed to come well recommended. A very modern day vampire style film, capturing a very different angle to others. I did lose the storyline a bit toward the end, but have to say the effects were terrific, not constant throughout the film, but impressive when they appear.

The effects were really awesome, and the story I guess was okay. I have a feeling that ill like this better a second time around though because it was just so different to take in for the first time.

Overall I liked this flick. It's kind of Blade, Underworld, Matrix and Highlander all thrown into a Russian Blender. I was told the books are good, have to check them out. Also, I saw the dubbed version. I will watch the Russian version and may update the review. I watched the Russian version and it is better. Don't even bother watching the dubbed version.

This is not your ordinary movie! Based on the Russian novel; or rather set of novels, this is a great movie,... but MUST be watched with it's sequel, Day Watch. A third movie is scheduled; called, Twilight Watch.

It's often a bit too hard to follow for it's own good, but at least it looks nice and has a good plot.

Fun and very visual film from Russia. The story is okay, with perhaps too much emphasis put on mysterious elements rather than building characters, but knowing that this is the first chapter in a proposed trilogy that's okay. Plus the payoff is pretty good too. Makes me anxious to see Daywatch and the director's Wanted.

Nice style, but not much content. Serves up as an intro to plenty of characters but doesn't really flesh out any of them.

Pretty goddamned disappointing. Nightwatch has a great premise, generally fantastic imagery and not a hell of a lot else to back it up. The character development was generally uneven as was the story. Things would happen and I'd wonder where the hell it all came from. This movie had is moments, definitely but it just made me want to watch Constantine instead.

superb visual effects. very cool, although i didn't really get some parts. i felt that it was bordering a little on style over substance, the visuals distracted the viewer from the story and message.

I cried at the very end on this one. I undervalued this movie at the beginning. But it has a really good message and a really good drama for a vampire story.

By the way, Konstantin Khabensky is so sexy!

This was a bit hard to follow. I think it is probably better in Russian with subtitles than with the dubbing. The next in the series is quite good.

It just doesn't make sense. There are extremely well-made movies like Sin City or Sweeney Todd that make no sense, but that is of so little importance when virtually everything else in those films is stellar. This film makes so ridiculously little sense at all that not even the great special effects can redeem it.

i realy dont know how to rate this movie !
the point is the story is so believable !
i realy like it but i dont know why ... it could be another minimal dracula or good/evil movie but its not .
i should have rate it up to 3 stars but at the end i gave it 4 .

a mess. more style than substance. perhaps some things were lost in translation, but i can be certain the plot was incoherent also.

Very interesting story and artistic concepts. This IS an "art" film believe it or not. The way they worked the captions is amazing and something I've never seen used before. I'm not sure if the entire story really grabs me. It can be sometimes confusing. But the movie is worth the watch.

A very dark affair. Took some time to settle into the script and the end seemed a bit rushed. Visually amazing though.

Absolutely amazing film. I know a lot of people didn't like the story line or the graphics, but I found the whole movie amazing.

But there is one thing to note: AVOID THE DUBBED VERSION! The subtitled version is the way to go. Seriously. You don't even realize you reading them, and the dubbed over voiced seem to take away from the original.

All in all, my favorite vampire movie. Seriously. Watch it. Now.

You can get the books in english at probably any bookstore. They have them at Chapters and Indigo...if you have those stores in your vicinity.

I suggest reading the books, they changed shit around in the flick...but it wasn't bad. I'd have not, but hey...I'm not the director or screen writer...now am I? XD

If you want to read the series, which is vastly different from the movies.. yet awesome in their own right.. you can usually check out nightwatch from your local library.. but the other two you'll have to buy at barnes and noble. they also sell them online at amazon where you can find them at discounted prices.

personally i liked the american versions better than the russian. i didn't like the way they were cut in the russian versions.. but i absolutely love this series. the books are really great and contain a lot more detail about the gloom and magic that the movies don't really cover.

Only watch the ORIGINAL RUSSIAN version with subtitles, as it's FAR superior to the UK/USA dubbed one!
