Plot: The clock is ticking for Johnny Depp in Nick of Time, a twist-filled, race-against-time thriller directed by John Badham (Drop Zone, Saturday Night Fever). And indeed it is a race, filmed in "real tim...( read more read more... )e" so that onscreen events unfold minute by nail-biting minute as they would in real life. No sooner does accountant Gene Watson (Depp) arrive at L.A.'s Union station with his six-year-old daughter than he's plunged into a nightmare. Two shadowy strangers (Christopher Walken, Roma Maffia) separate Watson from his little girl, slap a gun into his hand and present a devil's bargain: kill a top government official before she leaves a nearby political rally... or never again see his beloved child.

Mild thriller of interest to those interested in seeing the talents of Depp and Walken lock horns. Depp is blackmailed by Walken and his 'parter' Roma Mafia into murering a political candidate, using his daughter to their advantage. As the plot thickens, Depp discovers that more people are in on it then he was initially led to believe, and he manages to discreetly request the help of an honest shoe polisher Charles S. Dutton. A conventional ending, Nick of Time gets by on the stars and its short running time.

This clever thriller plays itself out in "real time"; that is, the entire action takes place during the time required to watch it.

Although this isn't an absolutely excellent movie, I still had to stay up to the early hours of the morning to wtach all of it because I just had to know what happens in the end. This film has a great cocept. A man with a little daughter is randomly picked up by mysterious people who tell him to murder the governor of California or they will kill his daughter. That must be one of the worst situations to ever be in. Johnny Depp plays the said manwho is forced against his will to do this murderous deed. For once, he looks normal and plays a straight character. This is one of his more less intresting roles, but he does enough to make you feel sympathy for him and really get how tense he must be feeling. Christopher Walken plays the man who has forced Depp to do this. He is really the gem of the cast. He steals the show as the sneaky villian, you get the feeling he would shoot a little girls head off without a second thought, he creates a genuine villian. As he film patters along, for once actually keeping with real time for the most part, things start to fall abit. The beginning works because there is really only a few characters involved, Depp, Walken, the daughter, villians assistant and the govenor. BUt as the film goes along, the plot thickens and more characters are thrown into the mix, a conspiracy develops, more people are revealed to be bad guys and a couple of good guys pop up. It worked better focususing on Depp and Walken. Yes, the extra characters do make the plot move on more, but I think they should have written it just focusing on the two leads. As it reaches its climax, things seem to get really rushed. alot of things seem to happen all at once. With the ending it just seems to stop. It needs more backing to have more of a rounded off ending, it doesn't work if you have all this action and then just seems to suddenly end. This sin't the sort of film that called for it. Really see this film for a straight performance from Depp and a great show stealling performance from Walken. A strong start, ok middle, shakey ending.
