"If you can see the future, you can save it."
A man with the ability to see the future and change the outcome of events before they occur is forced to choose between saving himself and saving the world in this supernatural thriller starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day, The Edge). Cris Johnson (Cage) is a Las Vegas magician who possesses the unique ability to witness the events of the immediate future moments before they happen. As a child Cris was subjected to a series of cruel experiments by government scientists and doctors, but a change of name and a new identity allowed the tortured psychic to elude detection and start a new life away from the prying eyes of his former captors. Though his clairvoyant vision only extends a few minutes into the future, it has still allowed Cris to eke out a living as a low-rent Las Vegas magician while earning a little extra cash at the blackjack tables. Up to this point in his life Cris has never used his power for anything substantial, but when he experiences a vision of Los Angeles being incinerated in a nuclear holocaust, the small-time magician realizes that he could hold the key to saving millions of lives. But as low as he has tried to lie in recent years, Cris has never completely escaped detection by the government. Now, as terrorists prepare to unleash the ultimate horror on an unsuspecting city, FBI counter terror agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) sets out to capture Cris and convince him to use his exceptional gift to prevent the nuclear nightmare from becoming a terrifying reality.
Review
Philip K. Dick has been the inspiration for many movies from big hits like Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Minority Report, to box office bombs like Screamers and Paycheck. His story, "The Golden Man" is the basis for Next. If you know what deus ex machina is, you'll know roughly how the ending goes. You'll also know how the ending works if you watched the TV show Dallas. I won't ruin the movie by telling you how it ends, but as the end credits rolled, I got a feeling that I was ripped off, simply because the ending is exactly what writers are told never to write. I didn't expect it, but it was disappointing nonetheless.
no.no.no.no.no! i hate nicolas cage. he is dummbbbbbb. if this was any other person playing the magician then MAYBE this movie would be alright. i atucally loved how he dodged the security at the casino. but the rest of it was pretty dumb.
The ending was way too disappointing, but apart from that, it was a nice movie. I especially loved the whole message: 'you can see the future, but no matter what you do, you can't change it to suit your needs'.
Similar to Memento in its use of concept and existentialism. Not quite as good, the existentialism being buried pretty far under all the effects, but a good use of an interesting concept. Cage's character has to be using his ability to go back and redo certain events thousands of times more than the special effects show and his narration about the ripple effect of time travel is what gives this story lots of possibilities. I liked Julianne Moore, Peter Falk in a short scene, and Jessica Biel. The romance between Biel and Cage was awkward though. They tried to develop his feelings for her as the thing which pulls his conscience into action, but most of their scenes together seemed like they belonged in a different movie. This movie has the opposite look of Memento though with all the bright sunshine and wide open spaces, even Las Vegas is big and bright.
a great movie....nicolas cage was just perfect for his part..(he can do no wrong in my eyes lol).
have watched it a few times and have enjoyed it every time. wish i had that ability..lol
I just watched Next. it was a pretty good movie- entertaing.Didn't like the part where he split up 10 different ways in the warehouse...and what's with the "I gotta take care of something. Ill be back in a week or a month?" Why is it going to take so long? Im confused!! And he's having a VERY BAD hair day!! hahaha And I agree- the match up of him and Jessica Beil is not good- there's at least a 20 yr spread!!!

*SOILER ALERT*
In response to the last reply, being that Nicolas Cage's characterv already knows everything down to the details of where the bad guys are located, it would be lackluster for them to show them go through everything again.
