Johansson's first appearance as Allen's new muse. Thrilling to watch. Love the story line. Definitely different from typical Allen. Much more modern.
Its a good movie... but kinda sad. to understand the what kind od movie it is you would simply have to watch it.
If an Abercrombie and Fitch magazine advertisement came to life...well thats "Match Point", a technically well done drama which purposely feels quite antiseptic and steely. It's about a man who has luck on his side, marries into a wealthy family and ultimately has to choose between love or money. The movie is about the choices one makes, and the consequences thereafter. However, the final outcome of one's deeds sometimes is determined more by luck. All performances are competent, however no character is truly likeable and hence, the movie serves more as a moral fable....it is not entertaining; I would characterize it more as a thought provoking piece of work. It's definitely worth watching as the final half hour plays out in dramatic fashion.
It's perfect in my eyes. Writing-wise is unbelievably sharp and intelligent, Woody avoids his own typical Woody-ness masterfully, acting-wise Rhys-Meyers delivers the greats as usual, Mortimer is actually quite touching in (what could have been) a rather flat role and Johansson is actually, unlike popular opinion, quite perfect, and directing-wise it's almost oddly haunting, the use of opera music giving me goosebumps.
scarlett johansan was weak. but everyone else made up fro her poor performance. Jonathan is a committed actor who is always up to the task.
"There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net and for a split second it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck it goes forward and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose."
'Match Point' is a tale about love, lust and luck. It is an unfurling array of characters, clothes and plot so thick it makes for an abundant soul of repressed emotion. It isn't tacky or decisive, but smart and sincere in leading the audience to certain presumptions, only to pull the rug from beneath us and diverge the narrative down a more surprising avenue of traditional tragedy.
Chris Wilton is a bored working class tennis instructor who prefers the better things in life: opera, tennis, the arts. He is well-mannered, old fashioned. When he becomes romantically involved with the daughter of a wealthy upper class family, his life is thrust into a safe world of jobs, money, and marriage. But he lusts after his brother-in-laws fiance, and his reluctance to avoid temptation makes for a tense and obsessive love triangle.
Woody Allen's direction is superlative. Tension floods the screen from start to finish, and themes of love, infidelity, and chance are explored with utter sophistication. More than once 'Match Point' appears to go in one direction, but takes another curve altogether, through luck as it would happen. The writing is fluent and intelligent, and I admired how well he moulded characters into reality. His use of classical music too is innovative, and in tone, perfect.
'Match Point' also boasts some incredible performances; Jonathon Rhys Meyers is impressive as tennis-pro Chris, and both Emily Mortimer and Scarlett Johansson add melancholy and fire as his wife and mistress, respectively. Their chemistry is spot-on, and their relationships some of the most interesting you could witness unravel.
Chris' life has repeated opportunities to fall one way or the other. On the one hand, he could end up with everything he wants, needs and desires. On the other, he could lose, and losing could destroy what he has worked so hard to gain. Although the ending lasts just that little too long, it is successful in highlighting the lengths a superficial man would go to protect his life, and ambition.
A film like 'Match Point' nails it's own ambitions. Allen is masterful at extracting the most from his actors, and setting. The world of upper class Brits is juxtaposed with the most horrific crime, and underneath the perfection lies deceit, and treachery. Tragedy and success are based more on luck than kindness and spite; much more than we would like to admit. This exemplary drama conveys how things out of our control are those which actually shape our lives. How life may very well be a game of luck.
Help me please. Save me from Woody Allen. Watched Cassandra's Dream last week and as well crafted and acted as it was i never got on board. Based on my friends recs I decided to try again with a movie supposed to be better. I think I must have a hidden aversion for Allen. I recognize the craft, just don't enjoy the work.

I agree with the movie: "I´d rather be lucky than good". This is a movie about luck, obsession, passion and temptation, the movie may seem slow but it´s worth to see. With great performance by Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.
Match Point is my favorite Woody Allen film. This movie is just a perfect drama with an unexpected and different ending.
Not typical Woody Allen, but worth a watch. I find this a little bit overrated, although it is a very good film with solid cast and performances and a beautiful script, as usual. Very recommended, and that's it. Very nice watch.
83/100
"The man who said 'I'd rather be lucky than good' saw deeply into life. People are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It's scary to think so much is out of one's control. There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose."
This film begs you to hate it. You hate the characters, you hate their moral choices, you hate that they are above consequences, you hate Chris's final choice, you hate the part of the innocent blood being necessary, you hate that...Well I won't ruin it because if you make it through this the last third is suspensefully worth watching, but I hated everything about this movie except the suspense of the last act and the twist ending, and a great job by Woody Allen for putting together something so far from his element. I just wish he would do it with a story that is worth telling.
But there really is nothing likable in this story, its characters, or most of the actors. I'm sorry, I guess I missed the boat this time.
Evil.A glance at the hypocrisy, the infidelity and the cinism of the modern society...all in one man.
I like the Crime and Punishment trilogy...Can't wait to see Scoop!
I think that Mr. Allen did a great job as far as this movie is concerned. The performance of the actors and actresses was formidable and absolutely flawless.
A really, really well done movie. Shocking, unexpected, sexy, beautifully acted, and wonderfully nuanced in direction, writing, and music. A movie that I can watch again and again, yet never really tire of.
This is Woody Allen? Props to him for stepping way out of his comfort zone and making a really good movie.
First of all, I don't really see why this movie was rated R. Second of all, I didn't feel that the lead actor (Rhys-Meyers) was that great, nor was Scarlett Johansson.
Oh my I love that movie. I don't know how the man got away with such a heinous crime. He killed the old woman next door and then killed Scarlette's character just to hide his infidelity and outside unborn child. My goodness and he still got away with the crime even though one of the investigators had no doubts that he was guilty. Nice movie I really couldn't keep my head away from the tv screen:)
Good suspense movie. This is one Woody Allen film that got a lot of acclaim. But, to me, it ends up being a revision of "Crimes and Misdemeanors," a film I didn't like in the first place.
I thought this was kind of boring. I thought I'd like it a lot better that Crimes and Misdemeanors, which it's a newer version of, but I actually didn't.
Like Fatal Attraction this is a good advert for fidelity and just how bad things can get if you can't control yourself...yet where this film pulls itself together is the unpredictable last half hour which nicely rounds off the "luck" theme that is discussed at the start.
Match Point is a terrific film involving love triangles and is actually pretty thrilling. Woody Allen does it again with this masterpiece. This is one of his best. The whole cast does a fantastic job. This is a must see for everybody out there.
This very cleverly constructed Woody Allen film jumps from social climber story over love drama to ice cold thriller really perfectly and still flows really evenly. The scenes are short and to the point, some events may be happening a little too fast but the plot is carried at any time by an excellent cast, especially Rhys-Meyers and Johansson are very convincing. The audience can't help but watch how the noose keeps closing around the main character's neck and yet the movie always comes up with new turns and a pretty unusual ending. For someone who was never much of a fan of Allen's comedies, consider me impressed.
The subtly funny dialog and stellar acting (read pouting) do the film justice, though the end is morally disappointing.
It seems to follow a well-worn formula, but finishes very strongly, and it's ultimately worth watching despite a male lead that can't act.

A masterpeice!!!!! A powerful story that has been amazingly acted out and superbily directed....an absolutle must watch!
for those who have seen it: the whole movie deals mostly with the theme of luck. the main character is extremely lucky, getting the job, the ring bouncing off the fence, and some guy picking it up that happens to be charged with killing Scarlett Johansson's character and neighbour. last line in the movie,"i just hope he's[the baby] lucky". the main character wonders if luck was really a good thing in his life. once i thought of this i liked the movie a LOT more.
Absolutely spellbinding. Amazingly acted, directed and splendidly written. Definitely worth watching.
Every screenplay should be like this. Woody Allen makes it again. This was definitly one of the best five movies of 2005. It touches me, moves me and impress me. It really shows the bad side of the human being in the best way it could be shown the fight between love and happiness.
