Plot: Harry Hook's adaptation is not as faithful to the William Golding novel as you'd wish (they excised the Lord of the Flies dialogue with Simon!) and because of it, the movie is less allegorical ...( read more read more... )and less resonant. A group of young men from a military academy are stranded on an island. The group quickly becomes fractious with a passive section led by Ralph, trying to get rescued, and a hunter faction, led by Jack, trying to procure meat and "have fun." Peter Brook's 1963 filming seemed to get closer to the Darwinist sense of this cultural disintegration. Here, the hunter faction seems more like Peter Pan's Lost Boys than the bloodthirsty murderers they are. The performances, particularly young Getty, don't quite carry the weight of the situation. It's still, however, sobering to slowly watch the school uniforms traded for war paint, and the little boys turn into little savages. --Keith Simanton

After reading the book you cannot feel disapponitment watching this adaptation. They changed too much in the film, but that's not why I didn't like it, a movie adaptation doesn't necessarily must be faithful to the book to be good , but this lacked of any symbolism, it was scattered, not intense and with a poor dialogue. The actors playing Ralph and Jack were good but the rest sucked, but overall the acting was better than in the adaptation from '63.
    For thrills read the book.

The book was exploring the nature of human beings, and it showed that there was contradictions in character. This was not shown here as the script seemed to be heading for a very black and white approach. It cut out a lot of subtleties which 'made' the book. Why make Jack a trouble maker from the start when in actual fairness he was prefect and had responsibility in his old life etc. Almost like they are trying to say, well a normal boy wouldn't do that - but Golding was saying, but they would. Also where was the key scene, where Simon speaks to the Lord of the Flies? From watching this film alone I would have no idea why it was titled such. The film was not bad, but I'm marking down because it didn't tell the story it was meant to tell.

The best filmatisation of this book. The movie really touched me adn I felt like I was Ralf. A great allegory of an elite theory of society.

When a group of military academy boys are stranded on an island, they quickly assume ranks - and form two groups. One, led by Ralph who are intent on being rescued, having rules and survival, and the other led by Jack who wants to hunt & have fun. His group soon become bloodthirsty, and commit many attrocities towards the other group. The young cast perform v. well.

The cover shows the actors from the 1963 movie and the 1990 movie is not as good as the original.

    The book was amazingly good!!!
    The movie is SLOW!

I still believe if the right Director would remake this movie then it would be ever bit as good as the book!

A sleeper film > If you read the plot written by Keith Simanton then you'll undertstand why the movie was not that grand.

READ THE BOOK until someone can make this film right!
