Plot: Four London working class stiffs pool their money to put one in a high stakes card game, but things go wrong and they end up owing half a million pounds and having one week to come up with the cash.
Barfly Jack: "Rory? Yeah I know Rory. He's not to be underestimated, you've got to look past the hair and the cute, cuddly thing - it's all a deceptive facade. A few nights ago Rory's Roger iron's rusted, so he's gone to the local battle-cruiser to catch the end of his footer. Nobody is watching the custard so he turns the channel over. A fat man's north opens and he wanders over and turns the Liza over. 'Now fuck off and watch it somewhere else.' Rory knows claret is imminent, but he doesn't want to miss the end of the game; so, calm as a coma, he stands and picks up a fire extinguisher and he walks straight past the jam rolls who are ready for action, then he plonks it outside the entrance. He then orders an Aristotle of the most ping pong tiddly in the nuclear sub and switches back to his footer. 'That's fucking it,' says the guy. 'That's fucking what' says Rory. Rory gobs out a mouthful of booze covering fatty; he then flicks a flaming match into his bird's nest and the man's lit up like a leaky gas pipe. Rory, unfazed, turned back to his game. His team's won too. Four-nil."
Eddy has been known as a cardsharp since he was young. So he and his three friends Soap, Tom and Bacon all decide to chip in £25,000 each to allow him to play in an illegal high-roller game run by one of the local villains, Hatchet Harry. However, Eddy didn't realize the game was crooked and he ends up owing Harry £500,000 with dire threats about losing his fingers one at a time if he doesn't pay within a week! Eddy and his friends discuss various completely illegal schemes to obtain the money and eventually decide to rip-off the gang of thieves next door who themselves are planning to raid a clandestine drug growing operation which keeps all of its money in shoe boxes where they grow the cannabis plants. The scheme is simple enough but the best laid plans of mice and men always seems to go awry as does this one. As extreme chaos breaks loose the violence and associated body count spiral out of control, Eddy and his friends realize that they are out of their depth and desperately try to find a way out before they too find themselves among the casualties!
Guy Ritchie is a genius. He turned a seemingly generic card-themed flick into something magnificent I don't even know where to start. Okay, so basically four guys, Nick, Tom, Bacon and Soap shell out their life savings so they can join a high-stakes card game with local mob boss Hatchet Harry. It turns out the game was rigged and the four of them ended up owing Harry half a million pounds and they have a week to come up with the money. Their "genius" plan to come up with the money draws the ire of some notable figures of London's underbelly like marijuana-dealer Rory Breaker, old school London thug Dog and debt collector Big Chris. The events that will follow is either a) funny, b) hilariously funny, c) wickedly entertaining or d) just pure black comedy genius.
This film is just too darn good. Its a healthy mix of black comedy, style, flair, wickedness, dark humor and awesome, magnificent turn of events. The casting and characterization is perfect, and Ritchie isn't afraid to move the cameras around; no pretense is really made here at "realism" - Ritchie doesn't mask the fact that it's a film and he runs with it.
The dialogs were perfect that is if you understand what the hell they're saying. At first if you don't understand their accent, just be patient because you'll get used to it.
The last 30 minutes or so is probably the highest point of the film. All these colorful characters collide each with their own agendas and you will be laughing until the end. The closing frame of the film will either shock you or leave you in a cliff, hanging. The ending of the film is probably one of the greatest movie endings of all time with the accompaniment of that catchy song, this film is overall one heck of a treat. I had a blast watching it and I'm pretty sure it will stay with me forever.
"Its been emotional" - Classic. A must-see.
One of the best English/crime film ever. Guy ritchie is awesome who knows why he married Madonna and the film that put Jason Statham and Vinne Jones on the map of awesomeness.
An intricate plot, kinetic editing with imaginative camera angles topped up with slick streetwise dialogue amidst an atmospherically seedy UK underworld and made up of a osse of hip, handsome male leads make this a wild woolly high-energy entertainment.
What a movie.A little better than Snatch. You will really enjoy the humor in this.I've always liked the majority of British films.
kinda look alike Snatch, but somehow different. guy ritchie has a funny way of making films, i guess it can be called his style... his movies often are a satiric view of organized crime, usualy with lots of gangs that will converge at some point of the movie to a bloodbath between themselves. but what its strange and that takes alot of laughs out of us, is the way and the reasons that that will happen. ritchie produces movies not to be admired, but to be enjoyed, and he does that quite well.
A very well done crime film. Guy Ritchie shows alot of promise here. It's got that low budget feel and plays well off of it. The dialogue is very snappy. The performances are all very well done. Jason Statham is very cool in this movie. And Vinnie Jones is the man in this movie. He is awesome. Such a badass. I love how he demolished that guys head at the end. Brilliant. I loved how everything worked itself out. And what the fuck was Sting doing in this?
8.5 out of 10
This movie met all my expectations, it was everything I had in mind for it.. Funny all the way through, and some scenes are just hilarious..
Smart script, I'm definitely going to be watching it more than once just to catch up on all the jokes..
Genius screenplay, and loved the way the characters get presented to the viewer.. Each has his story and then they kind of interlock in the most interesting way..
You do get the feeling that it's similar to Snatch in a way, but it's just a minor resemblance.. Other than that they're completely different.. And I guess I liked Snatch a bit more!
The performances were all good, great casting choices I believe..
But there is one performance that has to be pointed out in my opinion, for I found it rather remarkable; Vinnie Jones, I always like him but this was one of his better roles..
I saw this film last night at a friend's house, and as we were all getting mashed I must admit that I enjoyed this film muchly - Vinnie Jones is an absolute legend!
It didn't help that we all pissed ourself laughing at the Traffic Warden scene!
know,I know I can't believe I am just seeing this one.Two things,Guy Ritchie should make a hell of alot more films cause he is just genius. Two I am Loving Jasoon Statham more and more with every movie I see with him.His humor his demeanor,he just roaks!Anyway I am sure I am the last person on the face of the planet to see this, but if you havent this is defintely a great one,it never gets boring, some very funny moments and a surprise role for Sting.5 stars Solid!
an original movie. WARNING you will laugh so much you might have to watch this film twice to see the parts you missed
Loved this movie.theres a lot of talking but its the good talking and a lot of killing but overall a great movie!
Extremely cool & entertaining, Probably the coolest & most etertaining movie I've ever seen, Well It's comedy/crime & it's great in what it is & has a tight script with so many witty lines & I really liked the way it's filmed,... Not even a single uninteresting character, not even a single unnecessary moment, not even a single corny line,... and ofcourse a good cast & good perfs, Oh and the closing scene is great as well
Probably one of the best scripts there is including hysterically funny dialogs and a fast-paced, unpredictable and ingenious story. Add british accent, beautiful cinematography, perfect music, some of the best and coolest actors ever and you got one of the best movies ever made. Thank you Guy Ritchie.
Not as good as Snatch., but still very close. This is also impressive as director Guy Ritchie's first movie.
A self-indulgent comedy of errors, that I'm sure Guy Ritchie had a lot of fun making. It's a dark and violent comedy without a trace of a point, and a bit hard to follow at times. Very clever bits though...
Funny and serious at the same time, Huge Fan of Jason Statham. Lock Stock and Snatch are my two favourite that he has done
Some insanely hilarious dialgoues and terrific chemistry between the cast. Lock Stock may seem to be out of the book of Tarantino, either way it shouldn't be missed.
Very Very Very pleasant, or should I say hilarious, surprise! The movie is excellent! It keeps you going from start to end! All the time I was on my tows! The story is excellent, the plot, the characters, the performance (even Sting was good).... Really, Ritchie did a good job. So, don't forget to watch it
Unbelievable, funny too. It should hav shown us what happened at end tho, whether he threw the guns off or wot
I love Guy Ritchie. Vinnie Jones and Jason Statham are two of my favorite actors and when you pair them up nothing can go wrong.
I'm starting to think most British comedies, even the darker ones, made in the last 10 years are all the same one. That being said, this was definitely one of the best of the lot that I've seen.
This movie was quite an entertaining ride, with machine-gun dialogue and interesting characters. The plot is layered and intricate and the payoff is both funny and thrilling.
Good Brit films come rarely... but when they do you know they'll be good when Guy Ritchie is behind it, along with a stellar cast like this. Being his first outing, it looked like it would be a bit shakey, but this film is, on the contrary, a confident, brilliantly scripted and perfectly played out comedy drama that twists and turns every step of the way but never once leaves the viewer behind. The best British film of 1998? No doubt. The best British film of the decade? By a long way. The best British film of all time? Maybe. Just maybe...

This movie proclaims itself as a real comedy, but when i first watched it I found that i was enthralled more by the seething underworld these men live in. Having said that its still got some bloody funny parts in it. Watch it, its great.
