Plot: A middle-aged American man, tormented by his wife's suicide, drowns out his dark feelings by engaging in a torrid sexual relationship with a young Parisian woman he meets in a vacant Paris flat.
A film set on the city of love, Paris, but the relationship of Brando and Schneider in this film is not lovely, but very tragic. Erotic art in its finest.
Utterly quirky film on two obsessive people, one obsessive on wanting to just care about nothing and the other who is obsessive about finding someone worthy. It is really bizarre as it follows an unclear plot where the wife's suicide could be a catalyst at times and a conflict at times and you always wonder where these two people wander next. A very strong film and a daring one too at the same time which was well-acted too.
Sexual,provoking,masochistic,
luscious, breathtaking, like biting the most delicious fruit and realizing temptation worthed the undeniable stir of your body.Bertolucci uses psychological symbols, eroticism is the main course and bohemianism = life.
Very dark movie, Marlon Brando at his best. Kind of creepy in a way but thats what a classic is all about.
Marlon Brando in the early 1970's X-rated flick about sexual abandon in Paris between a man in the golden years of his life and a young precocious woman.
This film left me feeling devastated, raw, emotionally drained. Marlon Brando sucks up every scene. He burns with intensity. It was a hard film to watch.
It's been a while since I watched it, but I still believe it's some deep stuff... One of Brando's best, he's unforgettable. I quite liked Schneider in it too, too bad she actually happens to be a fucking idiot.
Graphic and uncompromising Bertolucci's masterpiece, not for the faint of heart or easily offended. Marvelous acting (specially by Brando) and direction make of this an exquisite piece of art to enjoy several times.
92/100
dark, rich, emotional, elegantly gritty, and uniquely European. a harsh, disturbingly moving character study with brilliant performances from Brando and Schneider. some great cinematography craftily blended with smooth jazz scoring. deep and unusual, Bertolucci's artistic classic is ripe with interpretations. you get from it what you want.
Not my cup of tea. Although I understand the deep message that Bertolucci wants to give us and appreciate Brando's acting, I don't like it!!
I?m not sure why I waited this long to check out this well regarded Bertolucci film, I?d heard a lot of misleading descriptions that made it sound really pretentious. The film isn?t really pretentious and I need to quite worrying about that because 90% of the time someone says that about a movie it isn?t true. Marlon Brando is really good here, and so is Maria Schneider. The film is still shocking, but I can?t imagine how crazy it must have been when it first came out, as it gets imitated a lot. It tells an interesting character story, and while I wouldn?t call it a masterpiece it is definitely a film I won?t forget soon.
i loved brando's ad libbed performance plus of course the awesome butter scene.. still trying to figure out the ending...
A true work of genius in so many ways! What amazing staging from frame to frame, surprising dialog, unexpected (but believable) character interactions. Oh, and for people who think this film is pornography, I would advise them to look a little deeper. The sex scenes only take up a fraction of screen time, so get over it. This is an original depiction of the human spirit, of how we deal with fear and death and love and so much more. A must see for any adult who has a passion for anything (in other words, everyone who has a beating heart!)
i think bertolucci did what he wanted to do in this, in "The Dreamers". he couldn't make this one work.
strange film regarding love, lust, and losing it all. Brando's character is confusing and goes through so much personal trauma, therefore creating a massive arc. it is the kind of role Nick Nolte would do in a modern day version. but they would never re-make this...
Difficult to rate. I guess since it is so difficult to untangle the feelings it causes, got to be a good movie. It is certainly not a boring movie, and worth the whole length of the movie. Not for purists.
Brando's contradictions are fascinating, and Schneider holds her own as a one-dimensional character. Leaud is well-cast as the amateur filmmaker. The score is an unforgettably important part of the whole film. Bertolucci's writing and direction though, are overrated. There is an ever-present sense of incompletion.
When you think something is gonna happen, a girl screw EVERYTHING. I didn't like the movie but after i saw the end, i hate it!
Story about a no-strings attached affair. There's some nice photography and music cues, but it drags along.
Saw this when I was 17 and it was rated X.....didn't know better.....it was terrible! On my "Movies I DID NOT Like!" list.
bertollucci is a big psychologis t@ first and then a wise and briliant director.i love marlon brando.
Les dessous d'un amour passioné. Violent, extraordinaire, intense, triste, brutal, impossible.
well. that's a classic. it could be a little shorter. marlon brando gives a truly wonderful performance, and his chemistry with maria is perfect. she is great too. as well, bertolucci. that's art.
I must admit I haven't seen this film since it was originally released, and ironically the thing I remember most about the whole experience was getting rear-ended on the freeway by a drunk while driving home.
