Plot: A quietly troubled young man returns home for his mother's funeral after being estranged from his family for a decade.
I am a sucker for Zach Braff (said it time and time again) So when he writes directs and stars in one film i have to see it. The music is well chosen and the shots are fantastic.. And while the plot is so mundane and never really develops past the first minute, that is the odd charm about Garden State.
Cute film. Amazing soundtrack. Sam is a prime example of the injection of free spirit and purity than everyone needs in his/her life.
I've seen this one five times, in three days, so I guess that explains a lot.
I am surprised with how much this movie isn't appreciated enough. But I guess that has something to do with personal experiences. I did have a look at my own personal abyss, and abyss looked back at me when I saw this one. So many things just rang true.
I loved all of it. The colors. The dialogs. Humor which was a string of gold.
On the other hand, I hear so much comments, from those who liked it, and those who didn't alike, about soundtrack being immensely excellent. It didn't strike me as such, as it for the great part sounds as it was taken from my player. Sounds rather ordinary. I guess that is just another thing that shows how close to me this movie is.
Non so, mi aspettavo di meglio da questa commedia. Il finale proprio non mi ha convinto. Carine le musiche.
Definitely a unique romantic comedy demonstrating naive attraction. The soundtrack itself redeems the whole film to a new level. I can go as far as saying the soundtrack deserves more merit than the film.
Though the first part is dragging, but this is one of zach's best movie and directed it too, this is one good movie so is natalie portman here . . .
An underrated but better cousin of Elizabethtown. A story of a young man who discover love when he is lost in his ordinary life. Natalie Portman shows how good an actress she is in this movie. Yes, thsi is one of my favorite romantic movies of all the time. The ending was dramatic and very satisfying.
Charming, rich, and relevant. From the moment I first saw the trailer I knew this was a winner.
Zach Braff not only shows his remarkable eye with this film - just about every shot is a real beauty, but also his solid taste in music which is utilized to the fullest. Perfect casting here as well. Chameleons Sarsgaard and Portman (the best young actress working) both play likable, interesting characters. And the three of them on screen together during their little adventure is a pleasure.
Clever, subtly comedic writing with a deep relatable subject at heart.
What I learned from Garden State: Pills are bad. You can stop Lithium cold turkey without a single withdrawal symptom. Zach Braff thinks dog testicles are really funny (or erotic, depending on the purpose of those lingering shots). New Jersey is full of psychotic bitches. New Jersey bears little resemblance to New Jersey.
Sorry, this movie just agitated the hell out of me.
I didn't expect this film to be this good. Zack Braff really shows his talents and potential as a big name in Hollywood in this film. Not only did he star in this film and do a wonderful job might i add, but he directed it and wrote it. He really proves himself as an actor, not just in the comedy sense the way he has done before but as a real actor that can successfully put his hand to any genre out there.
Braff plays Andrew Largeman, an actor who returns home after nine years for his mothers funeral. Up until this point he has lived his life pumped full of lithium and at this junction in his life he decides to stop taking the medication to see what life is like without it. On this emotional journey Largeman encounters old friends and a girl, Sam, played by Natalie Portman. As the plot develops Sam brings things out of Largeman that he never knew existed. The chemistry between Portman and Braff is quite unexpected to say the least but together they really are brilliant. Bring the best out of each other in the character sense and in their acting abilities. It can't be easy to direct yourself and know when you've got it just right but Braff does it with such ease I hope he gets around to doing it again if this is the kind of results we are going to see.
Peter Sarsgaard plays Mark, Largeman's friend from High School. The pair make an obvious duo with Mark being happy to take life as it comes and is in no real hurry to do anything with his life, whereas Largeman is someone who is searching for some reason to it. Luckily, by the end of the film he resolves his problems with his father and himself and in some obscure way, finds some kind of meaning to his life.
The rest of the cast do an excellent job as well. I have to mention Jim Parsons even though he's only in one scene. He's a really funny guy even if he doesn't get much of a chance to show it in this film. He plays the Fast Food Knight by the way.
Braff won a fair few awards for his efforts as a new director which were completely deserved if you ask me.
A quirky film that is completely original and definatly worth checking out. You'll discover a whole new side to Zack Braff which I welcome with open arms after seeing this.
I've wanted to watch Garden State for ages for the simple fact that Zach Braff stars in, wrote and directed this film - I just had to see for myself if he could be anymore talented than he already is in Scrubs!
About the film itself: it was really funny but mostly in a sacastic way. Also in some parts it was a bit too odd and I felt that it didn't need to go that far. But on the whole I really enjoyed this film and I would reconmend it!
With this movie Zach Braff proved to me that he isn't only a good actor but also a talanted director. Natalie Portman performs well too and the chemistry between them are great. I really liked the soundtrack, the music was good and fitting. Garden State is beautiful, has a great story and is well acted.
One of my most favourite movies ever. It has some beautiful moments, and a brilliant blend of humour and touching scenes. The soundtrack is also skillfully compiled and is one of my favourite CDs, as well as really capturing the tone of the movie. Watch it or miss out.
I want to marry Zack Braff. Anyone who can write, direct and star in this masterpiece needs to be my husband. The character development is so amazing in this film.
It was a bit different from all the other films I've seen, a bit clumsy at places, but still quite powerful.
'I spent 26 years waiting for something else to start... so, no... I don't think it's too much to take on, because it's everything there is... I see now... it's all of it'
Written, Directed and starring Zach Braff, fans of scrubs may be expecting the same sharp wit and sarcastic humour used in Scrubs, but the humour in this film is more of a natural humour, with occasional laugh out loud moments.
I feel it took a little time for you to realise which direction this was going in but seemed to liven up as soon as Natalie Portman appeared.
Quite a deep story for a rom-com, very watchable and very different.
...and finally a great Soundtrack!
*Today, after watching it for the 10th time, I've decided my review wasn't good enough considering HOW MUCH this movie means to me, so I will write it again soon*
The Movie That Changed My Life and Made Me Want To Be a Filmmaker.
Dear Zach Braff: Please shut up. This movie is like two hours of listening to a frat boy trying to sound deep.
This is definetly NOT a comedy. But some part of it is very funny, like the part that Sam berries her mouse. I thought this is funny and brainless when i borrowed it but it turns out that it's more than a comedy. It's a very special way to see trough life. Sam and Andrew both have mental problem and they help each other get trough it. Helpin and loving has to be in ur life, or your life will lose it's meaning and lost in a desert that nothing can grow.
One of my favorite films. You can tell Zach Braff is a new director, but he still did a very good job. I love films that have a deep message and make you feel and think. I also really enjoyed Natalie Portman's performance. And the music is probably the best part. I actually listed to the soundtrack before watching the movie and fell in love with it then.
One of those films for late teens who are looking for something 'deep' but not deep enough for them to not understand. Commercial deepness, if you will. With a 'troubled youth' and a 'quirky romance' all thrown into one. And a guy from Scrubs being all serious. Annoyingly - it did a very good job at what it set out to do - and I would reccomend the soundtrack. It all just seemed a little bit too obvious for me. But you cant deny its charm that it tried so hard to claim.

Beautiful, amazing, and one of the best i've ever seen. And now the song 'New Slang' is my favorite song and makes me happier if I'm feeling down :)
Dont talk about Knights around Mark its a very source topic
I'm gonna kill that mother fucker lol
Really really really amazing movie like nothing ive over seen before AMAZING
This film is definitely one of my favorite films ever!.... Zack Braff is soooooooo cute is I'm so extremely jealous of Natalie Portman for sleeping wth him.... even if it was pretend!!!
The acting is freekin incredible and it really opens up the way you think about life *and Zack Braff too*
two words boring as, adding a third word, hell! not one good laugh in the whole movie, just sulking whining and crying. this movie makes me hope zach braff never directs again. terrible, awful stuff. natalie portman sucked too by the way
This movie is one big walking cliche. The characters try so hard to be eccentric that it just comes off as pretentious. Not to mention that Zach Braff and Natalie Portman's acting abilities are questionable at best.
this is hands down the best movie ever one of the best i've seen in a long time. zach braff is amaizing. it's incerdible.
Zach Braff's movie debut lives up to its high expectations. He has the potential to be one of the greatest actors/directors/writers of this coming era.
