Another superior movie that has eluded me for far too long.I have always loved Kathy Bates,In this movie you cannot help fall in love with her character. She is the greatest person, would do anything for anyone, except herself really. Her underdog tone in this movie is very believable,so does get a backbone down the line but the journey is sad and funny at the same time.I also have loved Mary Stuart Masterson forever, this was a stellar cast of women, although this is not just a movie for women or your typical chick flick at all.I will also add this every once in a while to break away from the glitz and digitally explosive hollywood is a great thing. You take a story that is very special and combine it with such a well rounded cast you create magic. The amazing thing is,For any woman if you are 17-75 you WILL find some part of this movie or one of the characters that you can relate to,or are maybe in the same sort of situation, there really is something here for everyone,I am truly ashamed with myself that I let this one go as long as I have.See it!!!

I never get tired of watching this. Everyone does such a great job. Enjoy watching Kathy Bates' character change from frunpy door mat to a confident woman who stands up for herself thanks to Jessica Tandy's story telling. One part of this movie always annoyos me . Mary Louise and Mary Stewarts's characters are in love with each oher and the movie just side steps it. I guess the producers were afraid of what telling the truth about these characters would do to them at the box office. Personally I think it would have enhanced the movie but we'll never know.

« Fried Green Tomatoes » is one of those classic films from the early 1990s I missed because back then I was exclusively interested in horror, science-fiction and fantasy. I decided to give it a chance as it seems to be rather popular among my « Flixster community. »

The movie is a story of two female friendships, the modern, transgenerational Kathy Bates / Jessica Tandy relationship and the post-WWI friendship between Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker. In both cases, a failed marriage leads one woman to reach out to another, in whose friendship she finds the true meaning of her life, and an opportunity to realise her better ( ?) self, formerly stifled by the marriage relationship.

The film is rather predictable (the two final « revelations » were definitely not news for me) and more than a bit disturbing in its ideology. As a supposed « family movie », for instance, it deals with such morbid themes as wife beating, murder, children?s deaths and mutilations, alcoholism, masturbation, vagina-gazing and even cannibalism, and it also involves a fair amount of profanities and blasphemies. However, as the film is a nostalgic chick movie set in the Deep South and looks like a cross between « The Great Gatsby » and « Stand by Me », nobody seems to have noticed it is basically a hardcore punk movie that might have been shot in the 1970s with a Clash soundtrack.

Even Kathy Bates?s « self-actualisation », rather than involving self-knowledge and self-control, is a matter of tapping into her inner psychopath (her inner Annie Wilkes, if you want) and unleashing her violence onto the world, in a kind of post-menopausal explosion of girl power (a movement which, apparently, was not originated by the Spice Girls but dates back to the 1920s, where it had adopted the rallying cry of « Towanda ! »)

So I didn?t like the message of the film (though I find it less radically evil than that of « Pleasantville », for instance), and I was midly captured by the story, but as I did watch the whole movie, I guess it deserves its two and a half stars.

i love this film, for some reason. its funny and has a lovely story to it, about an old woman telling the story of two women in the 20's and 30's learning about themselves. cant really describe it but its a good film.

the cast are great, (bates) is funny.

    so heartwarming, lovely, worth watching.

This was one of the best, heart-felt movies I have ever seen. It has it's different twists of comedy and drama. That is what gives it it's classic originality. It is one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen. It kept me entertained for the whole time.

The plot was quirky as was the character of Itchie. She was an interesting individual. She quite surprised me through-out the whole film.

I definately reccommend seeeing it if you have not yet!!! =D

This movie is in my top 10 for skillfully portraying a friendship that develops by coincidence (something far too rare these days) and at the same time having an intriguing subplot set in the past. I will never grow tired of seeing this movie... I confess that I always want to cry twice when I watch it... kathy bates great as always.. The way this movie is made is one of the great charms of it.
