Plot: An in-name-only adaptation of the once notorious sexual reference guide by Dr. David Reuben contains seven episodes based on helpful questions answered in the book.
Aphrodisiacs-
I liked this segment. Allen as a fool trying to do stand up comedy before the medieval court is ready to hear his jokes was funny. The slapstick and verbal jabs were enjoyable.
Sodomy-
Uncomfortable! A much longer dramatic story greatly condensed. At times made me laugh a little, but this was as I turned my head and tried to cover my eyes.
Women's Orgasms-
Copying an Italian Art picture. Wow, never seen Woody Allen play this cool Italian sort of character, he can play something besides the nebish neurotic New Yorker. It is funny that Americans have always been more accepting of sexual themes in foreign films, as long as we can't understand the words, Europe can talk about or show us anything.
Transvestites-
Actually the guy is a crossdresser, not a transvestite. This one was not very funny.
Perversion-
A fake TV gameshow with a young Regis Philbin as one of the guest celebrity panelists. I didn't understand the rules of the game cause I don't think it was developed enough. Again not very funny.
Sexual Research-
A science fiction B-movie. Complete with man and woman strangers meeting and by coincidence having the same destination, a creepy old mansion run by a mad scientist with humped back servant, the mad scientist's laboratory going haywire allowing a giant monster experiment to escape, and the man and woman turned heroes finding hick sheriff and working together to capture the rampaging killer experiment. Now, the scientist is researching sex and the escaped monster experiment is a single giant boob! There are so many BAD jokes and the milk is gross! Still I laughed a few times in spite of myself when I wasn't cringing.
Ejaculation-
I don't have any desire to see Eddie Murphy's Meet Dave. This is much funnier especially since it deals with the male body in preparation for having sex. Tony Randall, Burt Reynolds, and many others work the brain control room sending out orders for different body parts to respond when necessary. Hilarious!! The short circuit, the pleasure center, the priest tying up the conscience and making guilt keep the gears in the erection room from working properly, and of course all the sperm getting ready to "fertilize an ovum or die trying" is genius. Woody Allen as the one sperm who is afraid and doubting his purpose in life is worth seeing.
Classic scenes including Gene Wilder in love with a sheep and Allen as a sperm afraid to make the jump. Also Allen as the jester is hiarious.
Absolutely hilarious premise for a film, and the entire movie comes together really nicely. This is, regrettably, only my first encounter with Woody Allen, but I look forward to more. Bad taste done tastefully, indeed.
John Carradine is ridiculously funny in what has to be my favorite segment of the film.
One of Allen's best in my opinion, not all laught out loud funny, but all smirk enducingly absurd, Burt Reynolds on the inside of the body during sex is my personal favorite. There's also a fifty foot breast, and a Rabbi endulging his fetish of watch...(read more) ing his wife eat non-kosher food, and paradoies of Italian films, American sc-fi, and games which are pretty spot on.
The only slight mis-step in the film or at least something Ive always wondered about the "What Is Sodomy?" section? Because in this film Sodomy is synonymous with Beastiality and either Allen is telling some kind of joke about how people know nothing about sodomy and incorrectly identify it, or somebody needs to buy him an anatomy book...actually the scene in question with Gene Wilder (that's Willy Wonka to most) and the sheep he's come to love is priceless. One of Allens best comedies, a minor classic.
Woody Allen's farce about different aspects of sex was hilarious for the most part, but like all comedy, was hit-and-miss. The medieval, sheep, mad doctor, and inner body segments all killed me, especially the sheep. I wonder why Allen hasn't worked with Gene Wilder again after this, he seemed to fit this material like a glove and would handle his later, more dramatic work well, too. The awesome quips and general cleverness had me entertained throughout, even through the less funny segments. This was my first time watching one of Allen's early comedies, and if this is a sign of what they're like, I'm sure I'll enjoy the rest.
Perhaps the only really funny Woody Allen flick, this one asks all the naughty questions about sex in the middle of the sexual revolution of the time. It seems dated today.
Everything I wanted to know and everything I'm afraid to ask are the exact - same - thing! No, but seriously this movie is something else. Watch it. Not good for a laugh, but close.
Hilarious short stories about everything you always wanted to know about sex, but were afraid to ask. (My favorite is the last one :)
80/100
a mercilessly lampooning satire filled with Allen's usual offbeat comedy, bad puns, and outrageous slapstick. aisde from being assigned "questions," the vignettes have no real connection or consistency, though they each have their levels of hilarity. a standout of Allen's career for sure, even though it's more subtle and urbane than his usual work. given the subject matter though, hats-off effort.
Allen tries hard on a bit more edgier comedy based on some curious sexual habits. Some moments are outrageous, but not all of them work, none its hysterically funny except from the last one. despite that, all the episodes have their own "charm", in a quirky way.
it was 35 years ago. so you shouldn't expect too much of woody. the last episode was fantastic with all those silly "special effects" but other episodes wasn't that good.
EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK (1972)
directed by Woody Allen
starring Woody Allen, Gene Wilder, Tony Randall«With most grievous dispatch I shall open the latch to get at her snatch!»
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex is the film that really got Woody Allen going. After that one he pretty much shot one film a year until today, and its not finished yet.Its basically about sex, but thats no big surprise. It is seperate in seven segments, some are better, of course, and some are more boring.
Do Aphrodisiacs Work? is the first segment. Its stars Woody Allen as the fool, in a sex parody of Hamlet in which he tries to open the queen's chasity belt. Its quite funny, some clever jokes, but not too clever, and Allen is aware of it, and thats what makes it funny.
Then you have What is Sodomy?, which is about a doctor falling in love with a sheep and ruining his marriage for her. Its quite silly and Gene Wilder as the doctor is nearly brilliant.
The third segment is probably the most interesting. Do Some Women Have Trouble Reaching Orgasm? is shot entierly in Italian and is an hommage to Micahelangel Antonioni. Its visually stunning and its quite funny even if I didnt understand a word they were saying.
Are Transvestites Homosexuals? is the most boring segment about a man dressing up as a woman, falling through a window and trying to explain to the police what happened while his wife and daughter are having dinner in the house with the girl's in-laws.
What Are Sex Perverts? is quite clever. Its a parody of a black and white TV quiz show, but this one is about sex. Its called What's Your Perversion. A few participants have to guess the guest's perversion. Regis Philbin, as himnself is one of the participants. Its funny.
The sixth segment is simply silly. Its called What Are Sex Perverts? and its about a giant boob killing people, created by a mad scientist - kinda like Dr. Frankenstein - doing some strange experimentations in his lab. Woody Allen is in this wone again, its funny and its looks like those bad 1950's horror films about everything being giant.
Last one, but not least, What Happens During Ejaculation? take us in the human machine. Like it was a spaceship in a science-fiction film, or the NASA control station. Here, they are simply what makes the body work. In the meantime we have the sperms, one of them is worried about whats going to happen: «I'm not getting shot out of that thing. What if he's masturbating? I'm liable to end up on the ceiling.».
Overall, even if not all segments have teh same quality we cant say the film is uneven, cause they all keep the same tone. Its always funny and despite its title, its never really says anything that important about sex, or anything new or even shocking, which is the point. Fun film, reminded me a lot of Monthy Python's The Meaning of Life, which came out about a decade later, of course.
A different comedy with seven different questions, my favorite is What is Sodomy? and What happens during ejaculation?.
light and funny..."what is sodomy" and "what happens during ejaculation" were the funniest, the gigantic teet one was absurd in a kind of unfunny way maybe
Very funny. Woody Allen takes 8 questions from this famed sex guide and turns them into comical sketches. My favorite may well be "What is sodomy?"
A fun and interesting series of sketches (seven in all) in which we see many sides of Woody Allen's odd-ball humour, some much better than others. Of particular interest are the sketches featuring Gene Wilder ("What is Sodomy?") and Burt Reynolds ("What Happens During Ejaculation?"), which are really the two winners out of the lot. A fun and inventive collection worth checking out... and for the record, the first Woody Allen film I ever watched (I read his book, Side Effects, before ever watching his films... that's weird, right?).
Woody Allen. Drôle, pince sans-rire, léger. Il a développé son style. Un véritable plaisir pour les yeux et la réflexion.
That last little sperm skit was THE the cutest thing I've seen in a while. But all in all, this was slightly disappointing because I liked maybe just half of them. But yeah, the end skit made up for everything, almost.
A funny movie - at least in parts. A series of unrelated 'skits'. Especially like the one with Gene Wilder!! lol Also though the 'transvestite' story was funny. :o)
At times, horribly painful. A few funny moments (like the ending sperm segment) can not save this bizarre mess.
