William H. Macy plays with brilliance another lonely wanderer of the night, tired of his pathetic existence. if only Stuart Gordon had more talent behind the cameras, and the photography wasn't that bright. In the end, it's uneven, and the violence a bit cartoonish, but the strength of the piece is, of course, Mamet's dialogue and edgy situations, always compelling and deeply moralistic.
Uneven and at times preposterous study of a dissolutioned man's descent into the dark side. A starry cast service Mamet's vision.
William H. Macy's performance is brilliant, but the film is brutal for the sake of being brutal and any attempt it tries to make at social commentary is not explored deeply enough to be worth sitting through.
Edmond: It's too much.
A strange drama/thriller involving William H Macy on a very weird sexual odyssey, leading to some harsh situations, which conclude in a worse manner.
It is based on an old play written by David Mamet, and despite my love for his dialog, this movie is just to strange to really enjoy.
Certain scenes play out well or surprise, but the overall story just didn't sit right for me.
Could be worth watching. Will find and devour with my eyes!
Its refreshing to see Stuart Gordon take on strong, dark dramatic material as opposed to horror. Edmond is a dark journey into one mans contempt for his life that hes lived. There is more going on in this film that one veiwing allows one to take away from it. Macy is great as the title character whos dark journey takes him to the seedy underbelly of New Yorks night life. With some truly great cameo roles from Jeffrey Combs, George Wendt and Joe Mantegna. The ending is as hilarious as it is shocking.
