Plot: Contemporary drama comedy set in New York revolving around the guilt people suffer over moral decisions they must make during the course of their lives.
"Halley Reed: He wants to produce something of mine.
Clifford Stern: Yeah. Your first child."
A presice and admirable effort in portraying complexities of human relations , including their inner struggles and moralities.Although not exactly a Comedy, It has numerous incredibly hilarious one-liners. Woody Allen is a master!
One of Allen's 3 best films ever. Martin Landau is brilliant as the doctor having an affair. Allen shows that a comedy and a drama in the same picture can work.
not underrated, but mostly underseen. Fantastically dark and openly inquisitive Allen drama. Match Point lovers, be prepared to set the bar a bit higher for Woody Allen dramas.
"So Fucked Up" highlight: whole plot
One of Woody Allen's perfect films. Are we the sum total of our choices? The film tackles some of life's great moral dilemmas with humor, charm, and intelligence.
Judah Rosenthal: I remember my father telling me, "The eyes of God are on us always." The eyes of God. What a phrase to a young boy. What were God's eyes like? Unimaginably penetrating, intense eyes, I assumed. And I wonder if it was just a coincidence I made my specialty ophthalmology.
The more I think about it, the more I believe this to be my favorite Woody Allen film.
It has an exceptionally strong cast. A wonderful split story. The dialog is of course greatly written in true Allen tradition. It has a wonderful soundtrack. It is one of Allen's best works in terms of a well made film, complete with well imputed flashbacks, cutting, and editing. It also plays situations for the darker, which works very well for the picture.
Lester: Comedy is tragedy plus time!
Story one is a typical Woody Allen styled comedy/drama. Allen plays a struggling documentary filmmaker. He is seemingly unhappily married and has just been given the terrible but needed work of making a film about his pompous brother-in-law played by Alan Alda. This is pretty terrible for him, but he meets a woman on the production, played by Mia Farrow, which he wishes to pursue a relation with.
Cliff Stern: It's probably just as well. I plagiarized most of it from James Joyce. You probably wondered why all the references to Dublin.
Story two involves a successful eye doctor Judah, played wonderfully by Martin Landaou. While he is well respected, he is having an affair with an obsessive woman, played by Anjelica Huston. As she seems to be trying to hurt him by revealing the truth to his wife, Landau is forced to come to a decision based on the advice from both a rabbi who is going blind, played by Sam Waterston, and his brother Jack, a small-time gangster.
Ben: It's a human life. You don't think God sees?
Judah Rosenthal: God is a luxury I can't afford.
The two stories have many similar themes, of course played for different effect, before eventually coming together. The film itself has multiple layers and is all ingeniously constructed to work on many levels.
It is of course also set in New York, which provides for wonderful scenery in terms of showing many sides of the city.
This is truly a great film in all respects, filled with wonderful dialog and moving along at a perfect pace to reflect on both stories.
Cliff Stern: I think I see a cab. If we run quickly we can kick the crutch from that old lady and get it.
Welcome to world of "preachy" Woody Allen, Crimes and Misdemeanors is a Bergmanesque flick which dwells into human conscience but in a comical way, the Woody Allen way. Pretty Brilliant indeed.
A mix of comedy and drama: One is a Woody Allen comedy that is right on and the other is an adulterous drama heading down a dark path. It is funny (Woody's lessons), symbolic (the Rabbi going blind), ironic (the good suffer and the evil go unpunished), deep (faith and suicide), and is a film that leaves you with something to think about and learn from. The main question arose in my mind was "Why be moral if we can get away with it?", the same question that Allen's Match Point would arise.
The other point would be Hally's (Mia Farrow) surprising revelation at the end of the film, which shows us that we shouldn't judge on the surface, but must look deeper into the individual value of people. Do we trust Hally, or do we stick to what we see as the truth during the film? This is a lesson that Woody's character (Cliff) doesn't even fully grasp at the end, but Allen gives us the insight. It's one of Woody's bests, but is certainly not for all tastes.
One of my favorite Woody Allen films. Landau is outstanding in this. A must see for Allen or Landau fans. Big thumbs up!
CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS (1989)
directed by Woody Allen
starring Martin Landau, Woody Allen, Mia FarrowCrimes and Misdemeanors is an expertly crafted movie by Woody Allen, its one of his best. Its actually two films for the price of one as we follow two stories, which have nothing to do with each other, but we can only assume there is a point coming at the end.First, we have Martin Landau as an opthamologist whose mistress threatens to reveal their affair to his wife, not knowing how to deal with the situation and not able to convince her not to do it, he thinks of getting rid of her in an old-fashioned pseudo film noir plot way. Then we have Woody Allen, as a documentarist with a failing marriage who falls for the associate producers of the profile he is directing about his brother-in-law, whom he hates. That cute little lady isnt ready for a relationship as she isnt over her divorce yet. In the end, both characters end up in the same room give a sense to everything we jsut witnessed.
The Martin Landau plot is dealt very seriously, its dark and ambiguous to some extend. The tone isnt the same with the other plot, its lighter and looks like most Woody Allen films we've seen before, except for once, he isnt trying to create a hatable character for which we care. He is simple normal, with issues trying to deal with them, a bit more realistic and less neurotic.
The soundtrack used for this film is very suiting, there are some incredible scenes with little lighting and low violin giving some chills and tension rightfully suiting for the scene. Yet, there are other scenes which are simply funny as it could be expected with Allen. Both tones mixes up perfectly.
There are some pretty good performances in this one. Anjelica Huston is often on the edge of over-acting but she keeps it together and delivers the goods. Martin Landau is amazing and does show how his character feels inside with just one simple look. Alan Alda is fun to hate. Mia Farrow is charming and cute, as usual. And Woody Allen, is well, Woody Allen.
In the end, Crimes and Misdemeanors is a film about guilt people may suffer over decisions they take, its often about morality but it also have some interesting insight on infidelity, love and religious education. It makes its point quite valuable in that last incredible scene involving the two main characters, wether you agree or not. One of Allen's best screenplay yet.

One of my favorite Woody Allen films! I think it could be a little slow for some people but if you enjoy his films like I do, and you enjoy a good storyline, you will like this as much as I did.
Annie Hall being Allen's best work, I would have to say that Crimes and Misdemeanors is a very close second. This brilliant film centres around the repercussions people face after making certain moral decisions. Once again, Allen brings in an extremely talented cast, and gives them wonderful dialogue and a great story to work with. Highly recommended.
Ah sim... agora sei em que fonte Allen bebeu para fazer Match Point. A auto-inspiração, nesse caso, fez bem - embora Crimes e Pecados seja superior a Match Point.
a mature, intelligent, thought-provoking film analyzing virtue, morality, and choices. beautifully crafted from the darker, more pessimistic end of life's spectrum. great acting, great script, and a wonderful marriage of ruminations and themes from the Woody Allen philosophy.
This is a darker venture for Woody Allen - a lot of the comedy is bitter and cynical, and most of the story revolves around moral dilemmas and unavoidable rejection. A very thoughtful, exquisitely written piece, this is just more proof that Woody Allen is one of the greatest writers in cinema history.
This is Woody Allen's peak achievement. It's a culmination of everything he had been trying to achieve up to that point. The Bergmanesqe themes and depth, the European art-film sophistication, yet still leavened with Allen's trademark humor and wit. Frankly, he should have retired after this one.
Right before Allen decided to check out for a while as a daring director he made this brutal examination of ethics and morality. Admittedly tempered with some very funny moments, the film makes some brutal demands of its viewers, making them complicit in some reprehensible behavior. One of Allen's best.
I greatly admired this film, but it made me uneasy. And while I don't agree with this film's philosophies, it presents them with thought and humor and great filmmaking.
Still Woody Allen's best film, a contemplation on the darkness of existence in an unstructured universe.
with "Crimes and Misdemeanors", "Husband and Wives" and "Match Point", I'm beginning to wonder why Woody Allen does make more dramas. though this still has its share of hilarious one-liners and blends the drama with more comedy than the other two, i would still categorise it under the director's more serious work. like all Allen films, the dialogue is always interesting, New York is filmed a in way that only Allen can and references to Bergman are abound. the film is expertly paced and for 100 minutes, Allen grabs you and doesn't let go, proving to you why he is considered a master. if you're not really a fan of the director's work or have only seen his comedies, see this immediately as it's definitely one of his best.
