The year is 2027. Humans can no longer pro-create. Women are infertile. The youngest person alive has just died aged 18. The world is in chaos. Only Britain soldiers on.
These are the horrifying points that are made in the opening fifteen minutes of 'Children of Men', a startlingly realistic, genuinely disturbing film set in a post-apocalyptic future where there are no children. And it's shocking to witness what happens in a world without children. To witness the emotional turmoil of all those who suffer; to witness the lengths humans are pushed just for survival; to witness how a world without children can take away the good in people, and force them down a path of cruelty, and selfishness, because they have no idea what else to do.
Our story concerns Theo, a former activist who is asked by his ex-wife Julian, head of an infamous terrorist group, to transport an illegal immigrant across the dangerous south of the country to the safety of the coast. The story is a journey from devastation to refuge; despair to hope.
Director Alfonso Cauron avoids all the clichés of disaster films, the Government meetings, scientific advances, and instead focuses on the ordinary people who try to survive in this perilous future. The film is all the better for it. The action is thrilling, but understated. Even little anecdotes are strangely compelling. Characters you start to deeply care for are cruelly snatched away, and Cauron ensures that through all the horror and disaster experienced, we never lose sight of a ray of light, and hope, for everyone.
Clive Owen is superb as Theo, and supporting turns from Michael Caine, Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Pam Ferris all impress, without diverting the quality from this amazing picture. As young Kee, Clare-Hope Ashitey is also a great find; despite her attempts at firmness and edge, she remains a young girl in an awful world. Through an extraordinarily authentic set design, dark, gloomy mise-en-scene, bleak cinematography and a hauntingly chilling atmosphere Cauron quite literally creates a future where for miles, all you can see is devastation. The audience see little other than a destroyed Britain, streets littered with bodies and buildings, and immigrants locked away in cages like animals. The impact is almost sickening.
There is little else I can write about 'Children of Men'. It is a film that you have to experience, not be informed of. Cauron successfully combines classical aesthetics with a raw, human story to thrust his provocative and powerful film to the forefront of recent cinema. Its originality and visual effect fail to diminish hours later, and the fate of the characters is permanently etched on the mind. Is this what our world could come too? Is this the future that awaits us?
WOW, this movie is spectacular. Long camera shots draw you into the scene. The camera work and set design in this movie, make it worth watching. The story and acting just add to what is a great movie. The realistic view of humans facing extinction.
Clive Own's acting is not acting but reality. He is that good.
Cuaron honestly depicts the greatest action scene since Saving Private Ryan.
I didn't remember this one being as good as it actually is. As an action movie, of course; it doesn't work that well as a sci-fi. Cuarón's direction is just perfect... I don't know the English name for "plano secuencia", but here there's a seven or eight minutes one, and not exactly a quiet one. Wow.
amazing concept with a great cast. there were some beautiful moments in this film, and it's message should be a real eye opener.
An intense, heart-wrenching story that takes place in a future where the human race has lost the ability to have children and the world begins to fall apart.
I suppose this is one of the movies you either really like or really dislike. For my part, I did not consider it worthy of the extravagant critics I heard toward the film. Neither the story nor the realization appealed to me. There is a "smell" of cliche in the air, a vague impression of weakness that makes the plot all but flawless. I would call it a fake intellectual and innovative movie. The only greatthing though, was to see Michael Cain with his strawberry ganja...a rather unusual scene !
When i saw the ad for Children Of Men i said to myself that I have got to see that film. Little did i know that it would be one of the most exciting films i would ever see! The plot is so different than any other film i have seen before. Children Of Men is set in the near future; which in my opinion is the most believable future set film to date. No disrespect to any other writers but some films would have flying crafts landing on buildings as a daily sighting in the middle of a spotless London. Alfonso Cuáron makes us believe that we are seeing the future. He adds a few futuristic features such as moving ads on the sides of buildings and buses and to add to the realism, there is rubbish on the streets. Cuáron delivers us breathtaking sequences such as the five minute long sequence which follows Theo trying to find Kay in a war stricken area. The tension is persistent in this movie. The escape from the farmhouse left me on the edge of my seat. Not only is the plot strong but the performances are as real as the setting. I think this is one of Clive Owens' best features and deservedly so. This is a movie worth watching.
This is one of my favorite Clive Owen movies. This was a perfect role for him. The story is very moving and touching, and with guns-o-blazin', it keeps you on the edge of your seat as you keep wondering practically through the entire movie if they are going to make it. Julianne Moore did a very good job as well. But the directing was definitely something to be seen. This was a great film that I highly recommend to anyone.
A futuristic society faces extinction when the human race loses the ability to reproduce. England has descended into chaos, until an iron-handed warden is brought in to institute martial law. The warden's ability to keep order is threatened when a woman finds that she is pregnant with what would be the first child born in 18 years. This film was enjoyable for me to watch, although it could of been made better than it turned out to be. Clive Owen acting in this film was great as well as Micheal Caine, Charlie Hunnam, Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Clare-Hope Ashitey. Alfonso Cuarón's directing for this film was amazing. One of the best drama films of 2006.
A very impressive movie.
Manages to have eye-striking imagery while being extremely realistic in it's portrayal of a chaotic future world.
It reminded me a lot of Romero's Land Of The Dead in it's political perspectives but it is a much more accomplished movie. Probably because of having much more interesting characters.
great story, fantastic cinematography. Crazy long action sequence shots. I know they are altered but they are still great work that outdo anything else i have seen. The story stays realistic in that it doesnt drag into the reasons for the crisis or gurantee that there is a solution
A fantastic SF movie like we rarely see. Dark, gritty, significant, and very, VERY well-directed. Some of the scenes are gut-wrenching and unforgettable.
The best sci-fi movie of recent years, and the best film of the year to come from the 3 (spanish) amigos
Filme futurísco muito bom! Me fez pensar sobre algumas questões que podem acontecer com a gente mais pra frente...vale a pena!
A rather strange movie that shows a possible near future with chaos on the streets, terrorism everywhere and most of all infertility among humans.
I must admit, some of the scenes were very dramatic, it was impressive how some of the sequences were done in a single shot without cuts.
Clive Owen's character development was also good.
But overall the movie is too hard to watch. It's one of those you'd watch only once. Plus I really am not into those bitter reality movies, so I'm giving it an average rating.
Bringing nothing new to the dystopia genre, Children Of Men isn't badly made but there's nothing to gain from watching it, other than a shabby moral and a downbeat mood as the characters walk around in a dream-like state that threatened to put me to sleep and the plot gets sillier as it goes. This one is about the only pregnant woman in a world where the human race can no longer conceive, but if you've seen one post-apocalyptic drama, you've seen them all.
Great concept and really well done. Plus the super camerawork, of cos. And roles that suit both Clive Owen and Julianne Moore, for once.
It's a good watch, I really makes you think about the future of the world. I hope it never comes to the extreme circumstances as potrayed in this movie. I think Clive Owen in this movie is great, and his character is very believeable, he isn't some epic hero, he is just an ordinary man with his struggles, and his character became a hero because of his extraordinary circumstances.
[spoiler alert if you haven't seen it]
This movie didn't really seem to have an end to it. Which pissed me off to no end.
a weird depiction of the future of britain if infertility ran wild its pretty cool and some of the scenes make you think!
I will never forget this movie for as long as I live. This one is so good that it actually bumped my leading candidate, Casino Royale, from the top of my 2006 list to second place. Some might call Children of Men too emotionally manipulative; you see, when a movie is emotionally manipulative, chances are it's doing something right. The acting is fantastic, and one of the other things I really liked was that it tried to avoid Hollywood cliché as much as possible.

this movie got ripped off in the Oscars....Clive Owen deserved at least a nomination for this one!!!!!!!!!
Children of Men is an Amazing film.
I just watched it for the first time and I can safely say it's one of the best movies I've ever seen!
Dear Flixster,
Gary Oldman is not in this movie.
Sincerely,
The People Who Watched It
this film is the best film ever made. why flixster only gives it 3 stars is beyond me. yes it is a message film, but the message isnt preaching, its merely predicting the future. god dont ignore the fucking chaos to come!
Gary Oldman IS NOT in this movie. It's a mistake by the moderator.
Anybody see the nod to Pink Floyd? This was a very good movie. If you hate reality and violence then skip this one as you'll not be able to handle it.
