Plot: A wealthy teen (Yelchin) goes to a new public high school and ingratiates himself into its social fabric by using his charm to become the school's resident "psychiatrist."
At last! A smart teen comedy! The concept and the storyline are highly interesting, the humor is subtle (for instance, the entire movie has to do with illegally-distributed medication and during a scene the leading actor is wearing a T-shirt that reads "People like YOU are the reason people like ME need medication")
Some scenes are wonderful (the longest scene in the limouzine, the scenes between Charlie and his principal in Charlie's house and in the pool)
Anton Yelchin is unbelievably good and has earned my full respect. During the film he speaks english with 3 or 4 different accents and he's equally great in all of them. He's also amazing in the scenes where he is shown visiting different psychiatrists and expaining different symptoms to conditions he doesn't have. Yelchin is a fresh breath of air. Great acting job also by Robert Downey Jr. who is flawless in his every performance and by Hope Davis who plays the seemingly uncaring mother. Tyler Hilton and Kat Dennings didn't do an equally great job -they were simply mediocre.
All in all, a great, funny, light-hearted comedy that is easily likable and watchable.
However, it is generally far-fetched and unreal, since school life could never be like that. Someone who is illegally distributing prescrition drugs and is responsible for a suicide attempt faces crime charges, he doesn't just change schools. Also, someone who is responsible for the bullying and beating of others faces some expalsion time, not just walk around free or suddenly have a change heart.
I have yet to totally finish it but I really like it I was at the tail end and thought it was a whole lot better than I thought it would be
From the trailers I expected something Ferris Bueller-esque. Not quite what I got but I actually really liked this movie.
All about a kid growing up and learning how to deal with being different. A pretty fun flick that touches on some heavy issues but does not go too deep into them to take you away from the humor.
Anton Yelchin reminds me of the Johnny Depp Willy Wonka in this movie, but moreso, he has some great moments. The movie was blah. 4 stars for "Yankee Doodle".
this movie is not as good as i thought,,it had some funny moments, but not that funny, and charlie is a nice guy,the story was pretty ok,anyway,it's a nice movie
i really liked this film. it is more than just a teen comedy. it makes you think about the things in life. and the main character is cute ;d
Pretty okay. A little wild which actually made it better towards the end. Interesting concept....nothing too unusual or unique in the delivery but overall a pretty decent show.
LATE REVIEW:
All the teens gave steller performances, but it's no surprise that the real hightlight here is Robert Downey Jr. especally the last scene where he is drunk with a gun!
A good teen movie but surprisingly could have been a bit more impacting and could have had a better ending.
One of the years best, originally thought it was going to be a pretty good movie, but it turned out even much better than that! Go see it now!
Coming of age film about high school life is clearly influenced by Ferris Bueller's Day off, but while that film was light and funny, this comedy drama takes on teen suicide and drug abuse to make a film wildly uneven in tone.
I liked it because it was sort of 80s in style, and Bartlett was quite outrageous and a little crazy, and he's so young looking that it makes him seem more adorable. And I'm glad the "leading lady" looked different from all these other current young "actresses".
haha. this movie is amazing. i love the scene where starts taking ritalin. haha. and when he tells susan what happened to his dad. ohh. and i love len. he's hilarious. :)
This is a terrible movie. I feel like the only people who would like this are those who don't watch indie movies and therefore have never seen a movie like this before. This movie stars the kid who got kidnapped in Alpha Dog as this annoying kid who wants to be popular in his high school so he sells prescription meds to his classmates. One star solely for RDJ.
Good movie about an enterprising teen who will go through any lengths to be liked which includes psychiactric assistance for his troubled peers in the form of advice and prescription medication. Anton Yelchin is great as Charlie Bartlett and Robert Downey Jr. is as awesome as ever as the school's principal and father of the girl who wins Charlie's affection. Reminded me of Ferris Bueller meets Mumford and Pump Up The Volume.
this is my opinion of the film...
original,vibrant,on the edge,hillairous and sweet
about a boy who is allways looking for trouble in school to be noticed and his new scam will be the worst and funniest. thats all that needs to be said, now you have to watch it.
the plot is interesting and apleasing film all round.
the central character is not the average icon for a film, but he's brilliant. yelchin plays him well. so are the rest of the cast with dobert downey jr popping in it and making a "splash" literally. his character is very different.
its quite dark in places covering sensitive issues which makes it good, people can relate to it more. the light heart lines from charlie make it funny and nice again.
a decent film to be seen by everyone.
I'd like to see more films from the lead actor, Anton Yelchin. Having said that, this film fell short. It had it's really funny, indie-ish bits and multilayered characters. But then it had its cliched, predictable teen movie plot and moralistic themes as its downfall. Not to mention, Downey Jr.'s flat performance, although the irony of his character was not lost on me. Oh, Bobby.
So, Charlie Bartlett = a film with great potential that fell short of the mark.
it is such a sweet movie i luv it an even tho its R besides a little swearin an showin its really fine o also its one of those highschool teen movies. its greeeeaaaaat!!!
SPIRAL BEACH! Honestly, they are why I initially wanted to see this movie when I heard about it a year ago, months before the trailers came out, but then when I saw the trailers, it just looked super awesome, which it was. Fun and quirky and endearing.
This movie is alright. It wasn't that funny, but had its moments. The story was good as was most of the actors.
Completely differnet from what I excpeted but I still kind of liked it. Anton Yelchin (Charlie Bartlett) reminded me lot of Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
one of the worst movies in my collection. bought it from the cover claiming "like juno" well, it is a "movie" but pass it by.
The casting department wins the award for this one. Anton Yelchin's a little smug but he did a great job with what he was given. R Downey and Hope Davis elevated the stereotypes they were given. Tyler Hilton's nuanced bully with heart was fresh and attractive, and Kat Dennings brought skill and maturity to the adolescent proceedings with a pitch-perfect performance. I'm going to keep an eye on her.
