MCT:September 5, 2008A touching Vietnam movie. Big in scope and range, thanks to De Palma's bold cinematic tricks, Stephen Burum's cinematography and Ennio Morricone's score, which, as a matter of fact, is not one of his best, but it works.
I don't agree with people that say Michael J. Fox was miscast, I think his childish 'eternally young' looks served him in this contained, human, agonizing performance; and
Sean Penn was as amazing as he always is when he plays profoundly immoral characters. -

This is a film I only watched once, and I may never see it again in my life. It is about a gang rape and murder that took place during the Vietnam War, and is very painful to watch. But as always, De Palma's cinematography is brilliant.

Every great director has his big war flick. "Casualties of War" is DePalma's translation of hell unleashed in Vietnam.
An interesting real story always keeps the viewer on the edge of his seat, and I don't recall any real war mission adapted on screen before that.
Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn both delivered outstanding performances, and Ennio's soundtrack is mindblowing. -

De Palma's Vietnam war movie based upon true events is a really depressing watch. The subject matter is strong and iam sure itll stick with me for a bit. Which to me if a film can make me feel that way then its gold.
There is one key scene that goes a little over board in the ' I dont get it" dept. involving a coughing fit that could give away a position only to have the soldiers SCREAM about killing her so the Vietcong cant hear her coughs?. Makes no sense.
But thats really my only gripe about Casulties Of War. -

Fine movie both in appearance and in moral stance. They are all just kids! They just saw their good friend die! I dont really know whether or not Sean Penn and gang should be punished so harshly. Nonetheless, they are to help the Vietnamese and not to kidnap, rape, then murder them.

Michael J. Fox is excellent in this moving and disturbing tale of wrong doing under the cover of war. Fox's performance is his best to date and probably will be fullstop. There is very good supporting play by Sean Penn of whichyou come to expect really. Back when DePalma was directing strong movies this one is a cracker.

a harrowing depressing and asborbing vietnam drama about soldiers who witness their frinds being killed while some are able to cope there are others who take out their and frustration against the vietmeese and comit murder. In this story oits about a heroic young soldier who stood up against his own battallion after they captured a young vietnam woman, raped her and killed her like a piece of garbage and pretnd nothing ever happened except for the solider who stood up against them and brought justice to those that desever to be punished even if it killed his career. Michael J Fiox proved hismelf as an actor and proved to be just as good as sean penn and John C Reilley. All three of them along with a john leguizamo give performances that will forever haunt you and the horrifc act they do will stay with you long after you watch it. A powerful motin picture.
a must see. own it if you want. -

an excellent vietnam film. as with the majority of the genre, it will live in the shadow of full metal jacket and platoon but this one shines in its own right. the cast are strong - fox and penn face off particularly well against each other.

As much as I Hate Brain DePalma, I got to give him credit for this film. He knows how to make this film stick with you. It's absolutley haunting to watch these soliders. Sean Penn and Michael J. Fox both showed in this film why they are the stars they are today with there top-notch performances.

Gripping war drama set in the Vietnam War is a powerful experience and quite a superb movie. Based on a true story, 'Casualties of War' follows a soldier named Eriksson (Fox) who witnesses the horrors of the Vietnam War that is he not prepared for. While on patrol, Eriksson's squad unnecessarily kidnap a female Vietnamese villager (Thu Le). The rest of the squad soon proceed to rape the Vietnamese girl, but Eriksson refuses and ultimately empathizes with the girl. After the squad murder her in cold blood, Eriksson becomes determined to ensure that justice is served to his fellow squad-members. An excellent cast with superb, solid performances; this is one of the finest war movies ever made. The film moves at a steady pace and is extremely powerful and moving during some of the battles. For those seeking great action scenes, there's much to see here. 'Casualties of War' is an excellent production, and if you have not experienced it before, you must. Recommended.

I read somewhere that this film was pretty good and Sean Penn's performance was excellent. Whoever wrote that was spot on. You should watch this film if only to see Sean Penn in action. He really is excellent. Michael J Fox is brilliant as well. The plot is really solid and gives you an idea of the different horrors that soldiers had to go through during the Vietnam war and all the others as well. Good character for John Leguizamo to play and not quite his usually type of character but he did a pretty good job. Brian De Palma is a brilliant director and he should be proud of this film.

casualties of war is extremely emotional and well acted. Some narrow minded critics at the time bagged the film because of little things like fox would have been too short for the army. Sadly if they were focusing on that, they missed the whole point of the movie. Fox has always been seriously underated as an actor. In this film he showed if he was given good material he can do drama. Well written, brilliantly directed, excellent acting and a score that just tugs at your soul. In one word 'Perfection'.
