This was pretty good for entertainment, but it really wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it would be more about the movies they were making and less about the community, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was nice to see Jack Black in another tame role.
This was a pretty good idea for a movie and it could have been alot funnier with better people involved!!!
Highly recommended for all D.I.Y filmmakers out there, proving that nothing is impossible (except for copyright infringement)
A little disappointing to say the least. Definitely some funny lines. But the idea for "Sweeding" should have been taken further in my opinion.
This film was hard to get through it was very slow at times. I just have to mention the ending scene which felt like twenty minutes, I am not kidding this movie didn't want to end. This film leaves loose ends. Loose ends are realistic, but they don't make good films. Mos Def was quite good in this film everyone was just whatever.
If you must watch this film expect, a slow paced, artsy film with a few chuckles.
Director Michael Gondry all won us over in 2004 with *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind* But Failed to do the same with this Film.
I went in expecting the world in 'Be Kind Rewind'. I thought that this was going to be this years top comedy, but let me tell you, I was wrong. I think it's simple, I went in expecting way to much, and this film really didn't have to much to offer, there weren't any laugh out loud moments for me, I thought the cast and the whole plot looked really good on paper, but when you put it all together, there just isn't much there.
It just seems like everything fell apart for this movie, their was all of the hype and then when it finally released in theatres, the wheels fell off and it flopped. I mean, what else could you call it other than a flop, it was in theatres for about 3 months and only brought in $11,175,164 Domestic. But that's not the reason I didn't care for it, money doesn't matter to me, the movie as a whole just wasn't really anything special, it was unique however, but sometimes you need more than that to save yourself in todays film era.
I wish it could've been something I could've enjoyed, everything was their great script, great cast, great director. It's really tough to say what happened to this film, and it's a shame.
This was pretty funny,I had heard it was a different type of movie so I wasnt quite sure what to expect. You get the same old Jack Black (Thank God) and an interesting little movie. The remakes are pretty hilarious and the fact that tons of people were lining up for these ridiculous 20 minute re-makes left me in stiches.Check it out when you get a chance =)
the idea is quite funny but the end was pointless, and the means to which the making of the films was just random. then the film companies coming i just was a pain, then the film they ll made and what happened after as just left - felt let down.
Insane movie, it seems unscripted which is great for Jack Black, man was it ever funny though, have a little drink before watching this & loosen your grip on reality...it's a fun trip! ;-) Enjoy.
This movie starts off with an unbelievable, but very funny, premise... That two incompetent rental store workers have to reenact and rerecord the movies on their shelves after one of them inadvertently erases them all. And the middle part of the movie is actually about that, and is funny. However, the joke can only be carried so far, and soon we've wandered off into the fate of the video rental store and the creation of a movie production studio and all these things I didn't really care about. I just wanted to see these two try to get away with continually filming their own stuff. The movie was quirky enough it could have worked. So the middle 45 minutes or so were hilarious. The beginning 30 are slow to get moving, and the final hour is so boring (and confusing) it's barely worth watching. So rent it, assume it's a short movie, and skip the first several scenes. Pick up with when they go to sabotage the plant. And watch until Fletcher gets back. Yup. That's all the good parts right there.
This movie was beyond slow in parts but I totally loved the "sweded" scene. It's a must-see for fans of movies.
I've seen this on one slow day at work, and I didn't realize at first it was Gondry. It didn't promise much at first, but I was bored, and I really like Mos Def and Jack Black so I decided to watch it no matter how trashy it looked. I found myself laughing out loud and really enjoying myself. When the movie ended I finally realized it was Gondry, which made me love this one even more. You see, he did disappoint me a little bit with "Science of Sleep" which I felt was to fake and way overdone. Yes, you are weird and imaginative and so kwel, we know it, you don't have to keep proving it.
But, this one had no such intentions. It was just a funny little movie made to look as if they were not trying hard enough so that sweded movies would be easier to fit in.
I can understand why someone wouldn't like it, but this is definitely my favorite Gondry so far.
Quite a bit of a coincidence that the last two movies I have seen have been about remaking movies, Son of Rambow and now this. This one does alot more than one film. Let me just get one thing out of the way, this movie is very, very daft. The start of the movie is one of the low points, you don't know enoguh about the film yet to understand what is going on, but it does make more sense when you reach the end. Mos Def and Jack Black play Mike and Jerry, who are two mates, and Mike is left in charge of a video store by the owner Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) whilst he is away. BUt when Jerry becomes magnetised by trying to destory the power plant, he unknowingly erases all the tapes in Mike's store. Thats the most daft part of the story out of the way, even though thats saying something, the whole movie is pretty daft. So anyway, as a last resort Mike and Jerry decide to make their own versions of the movies to satisfy customers (what little they have). The first movie they make is Ghostbusters. In my opinion, that is the funniest part of the movie. Jack Black and Mos def work incredibly well together, and they make something that could of turned out pretty crap into a comedy gem! The rest of the remakes are very funny but the first one they do is the most original and funniest mostly because it is just them two doing it. Very surprisingly, the public actually prefer Mike and Jerry's versions to the real thing. So, they start making anything the public want to see, from King Kong to 2001. They call their productions Sweded (for some reason), and they become local celebritys. But problems arise when Government officials soon start getting involved and the sotre is in threat of being demolished. The main two problems with this film is the first 10 minutes or so and the ending is quite mushy. But the main element that stops this being too mushy or abit too odd is its cast. The cast make it seem real and give a storng sense of meaning and well just give the film sense, if you get me! Jack Black is his usual good self, supplying most of his comedic talents into his role, most of the laughs do come from him. Mos Def gives a nice, good-natured performance and has great on screen chemistry with Black. Danny Glover injects the film with his old school cool, he just really plays himself. Mia Farrow is ok, she is just really in there to help move the plot along and add more sweetness to the movie. One of the surprises of this movie Melonie Diaz as Alma. She gives a nice, intelligent performance which the character really needs. Also look out for a great cameo from Siourney Weaver as a Fed. I have only seen one of Michel Gondry's other movies, which was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I prefer this movie because it is funnier and not as weird. This is sometimes at a risk of being overly over the top but it has enough charm to stop that and the end result is a great movie, with the remake scenes being some of the most original and funny scenes I've seen in a movie for a while. Be Kind, and watch this!
This film was just a complete waste of time. Jack Black is the same sort of character he is every one of his films to date. there were some funny bits at the beginning but then it just incredibly bad about half an hour in and didnt come back. The storyline became hard to understand. There were no memorable moments that i remembered the next day.
The two main characters (Black and Def) recreate some famous movie scenes, but it seemed like Gondry gave them the camera and said film this movie. The camera work was shaky and extremely amateurish. There was no real depth and the ending if it could be called an ending was just plain predictable. Be kind rewind was a real surprise coming from the same director that did the stunning Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Just a real dissapointment.
it started of sooo well but just couldn't carry it though 2 the end. but did have some very very bits at the start
This movie was very funny and yet a little a bit confusing. I just loved it how the interpruted all the different movies. Ghostbusters was the funniest!!
As with most of Michel Gondry's work, the film forms itself around a mundane dreamscape. Whatever little victory of life there is in this endearing microcosm, it is celebrated. It's rare to find a movie that takes so much care of the things the world gives to us.
I love this movie!!!!...I don't know why, I just love it...is so inspirational for anyone who has ever dreamed of making movies. Yes, some of the actors were not great but they were OK, I guess.
Gotta love Jack Black for that Miss Daisy impression haha
its okaay but it lacks a bit. it seems to have a few comedy moments and good ideas but it doesnt put these to work well enough,
When you're walking down the street and you see a little ghost whatcha gonna do about Ghostbusters? I would tell them that this movie is great and it makes me very happy.
Ok, that's awesome, that's hilarious, not Shitlike hilarious, but hilarious in the right way. That's right, beleive it or not, an american one, wich had the same promotion design as any other on of them, but this one was actually not "empty". The Story was amazing!
This is not just a mountain of stupid events, even though there are some funny jokes, the whole concept is interesting. For exemple, they introduce us to this whole home movie thing, by telling us about Jazz history. Maybe it's just a film for Movie Geeks like me, but I think it's really something that everyone will appreciate.
The plot was stupid in some parts, but overall, it was still a good movie. I loved the inspirational message of chasing after dreams despite the odds.
I must admit that when I see a movie has Jack Black in it, I just discard the idea of watching it... most of the time.
But I really admire Michel Gondry's work so I had to see this.
I just have to say, as someone who is persueing to be a director, I thought this movie was awesome. Super entertaining, though didn't like the end that much.
