''A vigilante is just a man lost in the scramble for his own gratification. He can be destroyed, or locked up. But if you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, and if they can't stop you, you become something else entirely.''
''Which is?''
''A legend, Mr. Wayne.''The story of Bruce Wayne and how he becomes Batman. A fresh start, a new awakening...
Christian Bale: Bruce Wayne / Batman
Michael Caine: Alfred
Liam Neeson: Henri Ducard
''Are you ready to begin?'' Dark, focused and a return to form for batman thanks to Christopher Nolan. Mesmerizing how it tells the origin of batman afresh an conveys a sense of darkness and emotional attachment to the main protagonist.
Amazing settings and locations, in the middle of no-where,Tibet-style Asia journeying. A man trying to find his destiny, ultimately a way to vent justice and bring a sense of self worth to his existence.
Losing his parents and becoming lost as his thirst for revenge is ruined and claimed by another. He disappears from Gotham his home...to search the world for answers, for purpose.Batman Begins features some of the most compelling scenes ever done in a film I've seen.
A car chase that pits the Dark Avenger in a colossus of a vehicle against Gotham's police. Cleverly it manages to be thrilling, tense and yet at the same time comical, for example the police making quirky amusing comments on the chase or Batman's car/tank size or ability to jump rooftops. Highly entertaining.Another incredible sequence between Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow/Crane and Batman sees his lethal toxin used against him. We are treated to a terrifying vision of the Dark hero through Cranes eyes. A demonic creature of the night, an oozing dark eyed monstrous being.
Christian Bale truly makes the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne his own. Nolan choosing his muse English Star Bale, also doing Prestige round near the same time, was the beginning of a triumphant reboot of a fading franchise.
We have Gary Oldman too as Sergeant Gordon, a later ally of Batman in Begins and another example of genius inspired casting. His ''borrowing'' of Batman's tank is as amusing as the first time he sees it. Not to mention the beautiful scene where Bale uses an emitting device to call his bats that precedes Gordon's arrival and the chase.
Not forgetting sensational legend Michael Caine as Alfred who provides another sparkle and quality to Batman Begins.
''Haven't given up on me yet Alfred?''
''Never.''
Just strikes a chord with me everytime the accuracy of the bonds between characters, the level of raw emotion and love, especially Bale & Caine, or Bale & Rachel, who just click on every level.
The same can be said of Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox. Caine and Freeman can always guarantee a film with impact as well as quality and cause smiles then charm audiences with witty dialogue.
I even loved Katie Holmes in this as Rachel Dawes, who did her part to the best of her ability but was picked on by critics due to her being with such a strong assembled cast.Nolan's masterpiece puts a realistic vantage point on the dark hero. Giving twists and a more human, more believable nemesis who bonds with our hero on many levels. Making an impending final battle even more powerful.
Liam Neeson does an excellent job in this capacity. Hard, cold and idealistic as a mentor turned against pupil twist.
The beginning half of the film was sheer perfection for me. Liam Neeson and Christian Bale really sent shivers down me in all their glory, the sheer emotion and rage, dedication and ideology, fear and strength really struck a chord with me.Cinematography, score, music, action all effortlessly executed, all pulled of by Nolan to perfection. Not even Burton's iconic take on Batman that I grew up with could stand up to this new improved revamped, Dark, Playboy by day, Bat Avenger by night, hero.
Thus Batman Begins leaving us with the calling card of the Joker and Gordon immortalizing line,''I never said thank you.'' Followed by Batman's reply,''And you will never have to.''
Batman Begins begs us, taunts us for a sequel. Nolan did his job so well that in the end it was truly inevitable.
A certain Dark Knight, pardon the pun, definitely was on the cards.''It's not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me''
#1 BATMAN movie ever
Words almost cannot describe how much I loved this movie. I did not expect it to be as good as it was. I think Bale plays Bruce Wayne very well throughout the whole movie. He needs to work on the Batman voice but overall it was very well done!
first decent batman flick since the tim burton ones. christian bale is not as good as michael keaton. with burton he made batman which was good and then batman returns which was great. with nolan he's made batman begins which is good and then went on to make the dark knight which is great. all of the versions inbetween burton and nolan were a load of toss.
whereas burton relied heavily on his weird and wonderful ideas nolan derives his batman on a truer note picking up on all the characters faults and what makes him human. bale whilst a good actor doesn't pull it off as batman. his extent of being batman consists of speaking in a deep and raspy voice. however fortunately making a film about batman doesn't mean you need all your actors to be on form. it could be anybody in the costume.
some people don't like the way nolan makes several stories intertwine and insist that it would be better to focus on one bad guy and cut the runtime of the film. i disagree. first time around i didn't think much of liam neeson playing henri ducard but if you wanted someone to train you and look wise who else would you pick? the fact that him and cillian murphy who was awesome as the scarecrow were both in it worked out well. the scarecrow was probably the best character in its entirety.
nolan concentrates on bruce wayne the person and the characters surrounding him. katie holmes played rachel dawes and isn't likable on the best of days, however the rest of the cast, morgan freeman and michael caine especially were either quite good or astounding. much like nolans "prestige" where caine steals the show from jackman as well as bale.
the special effects and action sequences were seamless along with the new batman vechile of choice. it was entertaining and strongly so.
in batman begins nolan sets about instilling a vast sense of moral fibre into batman/bruce wayne setting up the stage for the joker to enter the foray and tear it all apart again in the dark knight.
nolans batman is a batman who is constantly questioning himself. a human batman
Bruce Wayne: "They told me there was nothing out there, nothing to fear. But the night my parents were murdered I caught a glimpse of something. I've looked for it ever since. I went around the world, searched in all the shadows. And there is something out there in the darkness, something terrifying, something that will not stop until it gets revenge... Me."
The origins of the Caped Crusader of Gotham City are finally brought to the big screen in this new adaptation of the perennially popular comic-book series. The young Bruce Wayne (Gus Lewis) leads a privileged life as the son of wealthy, philanthropist parents, both of whom stress their commitment to improving the lives of the citizens of crime-ridden Gotham City. After his mother and father are murdered by a mugger, however, Wayne grows into an impudent young man (Christian Bale), full of rage and bent on retribution until encouraged by his childhood sweetheart, Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes), to search for answers beyond his own personal vendettas. Wayne eventually finds discipline in the Far East under the tutelage of Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), a member of the mysterious League of Shadows who guides him in the study of martial arts -- and the ways in which an ordinary man can hone his senses to an almost superhuman acuity. After seven years away from Gotham, Wayne returns, determined to bring peace and safety back to the city. With the help of his faithful manservant, Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine), and Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), a scientist at his late father's corporation, Wayne develops a secret identity as Batman, a masked fighter for justice. But when a shady psychiatrist (Cillian Murphy) joins forces with the criminal underworld, Wayne realizes that putting an end to their nefarious plans will be very difficult indeed. Batman Begins also features Gary Oldman as Lt. James Gordon and Tom Wilkinson as the crime boss Carmine Falcone.
For those of you who were disappointed with the last few Batman movies, 'Batman Begins' redeems the caped crusader in a big way. 'Batman Begins' takes us on a journey through Bruce Wayne's tragic past again, giving us a real insight into what drives and fuels his quest against suffering and injustice. We discover how the billionaire came to be trained in the martial arts, develop his alter ego, and acquire his technological arsenal. Christian Bale gives us a riveting performance as not only a very dark hero, but also a tortured soul looking for the means to combat the wrongs of society, a society that we see is also responsible for the death of his beloved parents. Another thing we notice from the beginning is that this story does not tie into that of the other movies in the series. This is however not a disappointing feature, in fact it seems to breathe new life into this timeless classic. So for all of us who have followed the Dark Knight's journies, strap yourself in for a wild and inspiring ride.
This movie makes Batman seem more human and superhuman at the same time. It's a much darker side of the story but very intriguing.
This film sucked! And The Dark Knight probably will too. Bring back Mr.Burton you fools!! The first hour is good, but the Batman action scenes in this film were so overly homosexual, I didn't know whether to throw up or laugh. A disaster of a film as far as this old school Batman fan is concerned. This is the second worst Batman film ever made.
Batman: The Movie (1966) 3 stars
Batman (1989) - 4 and a half stars
Batman Returns - 3 stars
Batman Forever - 2 and a half stars
Batman & Robin - 1 and a half stars
Batman Begins - 2 stars
The last batman movies seemed to have been adapted from the cartoon shows on WB Kids. This version of Batman however, & let me just say this is the best version, takes on a realism that other comic book movies don't have. Or perhaps it is the fact that the filmmakers weren't targeting child audiences. Whatever the reason, this movie rocks!!!
''Are you ready to begin?''
Like it's title, the beginning truly is the masterpiece. Liam Neeson & Christian Bale show how deep a man with a dark side that needs a destiny can be.
DC Comics was, for a long time, criticized about not starting an Ultimate comics line of their own when Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men became huge hits. Ironically, however, this movie is everything an Ultimate Batman would have to have been: a perfect distillation of the character's origins and motivations, but set in a contemporary timeline and featuring streamlined continuity (such as the paired-down portrayals of Ra's Al Ghul and Scarecrow). And yes, I am a massive geek.
Now if only Warner Brothers would follow this example with the rest of the characters in the DCU for their own feature film endeavors!
Not exactly a fan of batman.
Cast was fantastic. Beautiful graphics and effects. Story Plot unspeakable. Two thumbs up.
In fact, never knew his parents was murdered. hahaha
i like this kind of filmmaking stripped and done fromthe ground up. the slap was a bit wierd from rachel. i hope we see ra's al ghul again i get tired of liam neeson cameos and no pay dirt what a tease.
