Plot: A former neo-nazi skinhead (Norton) tries to prevent his younger brother (Furlong) from going down the same wrong path that he did.
Ah, Edward Norton is the embodiment of a neo nazi. The breaking of the skull on the pavement is legendary. *ouch*
He really makes me hate, hate, hate him. That's how good an actor he is.
Dark film with Ed Norton about a young man who learns the difference between loyalty and friendship. Human fear of the unknown is explored briefly in this movie that takes on a difficult and controversial topic; the racial issues in the United States. Well worth watching, partly for the story but also for the performances of Edward Norton and Stacy Keach.
A good Movie, I hope Every of u Fucking Skinhead turn over to the right side after u have seen this movie.
i finally saw this movie and i thought it was pretty good and Edward Norton and Edward Furlong did great in it
and its about This flashback-laden film delves into the world of a former neo-NAZI and shows how his hatred spawned itself in his younger brother. After committing a brutal assault and Derek is sent to prison. There he sees that all humans have potential and all life should be respected. His life turned around and back out on the streets he tries to cure his brother of the same disease that took him.
Disturbing yet fantastic film. THis was my first time seeing Ed Norton and what an amazing actor he was and is to this day.
Amazing gut-check movie. Daniel Vinyard.....I mean Edward Norton (can you tell the difference?...didn't think so) just blew people away with this one.
I love this in pairing with Schindler's List. Also a reminder to us all that even though we may grow, we still must live with the consequences of the actions we take.
The neonazi history is very interesting, and when some white guy stay 3 years in prison for murder, some strange is happening.
Violento al punto giusto, con ampi spazi di riflessione sul finale. Qui Edward Norton in versione palestrata sembra calarsi perfettamente in quel mondo razzista messo in piedi dalla sceneggiatura.
Holy shit. This movie is...amazing.
Its dark, cruel and yet so fasinating. Its really powerful...and Edward Norton's performance is spectacular. Absolutley amazing.
I hate anti-racist literature in most cases, all because most such texts inevitably come to a self-righteous preaching tone before the end BUT:
This film first of all has the gratuitous violence that so many other films will gloss over. I don't think that it's overdone but I'm sure some people disagree with me, os99? Secondly its far too well written to fall into the trap of being preachy, with that in mind it makes jokes about the change in Derek's situation. It's a rediculously powerful film and (along with Donnie Darko & Lost & Delirious) is one of the only movies to have me near to tears with the ending.
I couldn't believe that the writer would let the twist happen and when it does it leaves a feeling that the entire story hasn't done anything to change the situation. Edward Norton's weeping over what's happened however shows the change its not an end to the violence but the reaction to the violence that American History X is concerned with at this point, only Edward Norton could have pulled off this bit without making it seem hackneyed but when it's done as well as it is by script writers & Ed Norton it just becomes an amazingly powerful conclusion to an extremely powerful film.
Hmm. Implies that in prisons the biggest threat of rape comes from other whites! Typical hollywood inverted reality.
Very good movie that really touched me in the end. Edward Norton is very, very good in this movie. I must say that this is his best performance yet in movie history.
This movie is extremely powerful. Edward Norton is outstanding, as is the rest of the cast. The pace is great and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. One of my all time favorites. The entire experience is riviting.
This movie touched me on so many levels the first time I watched it. I always wondered why the director wanted his name off of it.
Fantastic story-line, E.N. the "thinking woman's sex god" pumped up and controversially tattooed. A film loaded with violence but somewhat balanced by the plot.
Decent effort, but felt too much like an After-School Special. Extremely predictable, and the movie hurt its own message by stereotyping white supremacists. Still, a decent effort all around, and a bonus star for at least *trying* to deal with racism.
'We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.' What can I say? This movie is great.
Don't get me wrong, this movie is very good, but it's disturbing, the storyline as well as one scene in particular with a curb and broken teeth. But the movie was well delivered and the acting was right on the money, but since I saw it years ago when it came out, I've never been able to get past that one scene and it totally creeps me out!
One of the few flashback-y movies I love. Damn powerful message, and the last thing I have seen Edward Furlong do any good in.
"Hate is baggage. Life's too short to be pissed off all the time. It's just not worth it. " Powerful, shocking and most of all, real.
Edward Norton gives a blistering performance as Derek Vinyard and is definitely one of his best performances by far. You hate him at first because he's a Nazi but when he reforms you start to sympathise with him.
Edward Furlong, who played younger brother Danny was an excellent addition to the cast and might be the only film in which he truly delivers. I felt sorry for him at times because he was following his older brothers footsteps.
American History X is a groundbreaking drama about the tragic consequences of racism.
a very hard film to watch on a number of levels, but a worthwhile experience. a stunningly-acted redemption story with unavoidable consequences. the film is also a startling expose of one of the darkest sides of American youth culture while bringing to light the utter emptiness and futility of racism and hatred. a movie that accomplishes the rare feat of entertaining and challenging the viewer to think. overly harsh and caustic at times, but still grippingly human.

excellent movie especially the story. i didn't expect the end in anyways and the movie has a good mesage to learn.
Excellent, brilliant and genial.
A movie based on a pure and hard truth of life showing that a simple event can change it's course.
Excellent work starting with the director and ending in the actors, standing out between them, the brilliant interpretation of Edward Norton.
This movie is awesome for many reasons. But it is in it's ability to explain how racism is a social disease, and a disease of the mind (in the same way that alzheimers is a disease of the brain), that makes this movie a masterful piece of work.
Question! Has anybody heard anything about American History X 2. I've heard that it was to be released in the fall of '06. I'm pretty sure that that's a bunch of crap, but I do want to know if anyone has heard of this.
Amazing Movie... We've watched it at School At since Then I Love It.. It Contains Deep Meanings & Purposes...Good Job!
Amazing movie. Very well made and acted. But i wish they should have made it a little more extreme in the action.
The nazi party could have been better. The prison part was good.I did'nt even have a clue that edward furlong's sonna die at the end.
The past part in balck & white and the present in colour was very well thought of .
Edward Norton delivers an astounding performance. The whole movie is great and carries an important message. They should show it in schools.
I think I must have been about 10 when I first saw this film. It has remained my favourite movie ever since.
The only movie so far that's capable of making me need to turn away, no matter how many times you see it.
Not only does it send a great message and have a great storyline, performed by brilliant actors, but the way it is told is just great. The way it allows the audience to seperate what's in the present and what's it the past by colour and black & white picture. And also how it is all told over the course of two days through the essay Danny writes. So well thought out!
This movie was a good movie. I will not go as far as that, it could have been great but just a little unreal. try "the believer" if you want a more simple yet complex look at race relations.
A movie that makes you flinch no matter how many timesyou see it. Edward Nortons character is absolutly believable. What makes this movie so incredible is that it makes you take an uncomfortable look at the dark parts of your own soul.
