Not really a big fan of the Beatles but this movie is definately amazing.
The visuals are fantastic.
I found it pretty complete, a musical with good music.. afterall is there anything better than beatles. the scenes and the events in the film was well accompanied by the beatles songs.Taymor, my hats off to you.
So I've been waiting 18 months to see this... and I was very disappointed. So my sister had seen it and says it dosn't pick up until Bono comes in (who I love), however, that was an hour in! Within that hour we get alot of good songs preformed badly or just thrown in for use with no real purpose. "With A Little Help From My Friends" was okay but nothing wowed me by the first hour in. We also discover a man named Jude- "Hey Jude!" will play, Lucy- "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" will play, Prudence- Sorry I forgot the title but her song will play and Jo-Jo- "Come Together" will play. It all became annoying! As well realisim and the higher-than-a-cloud routine don't really work- every song was performed in extreame fantasy and everything else took place in extreame realism. So like 'Rent' it didn't work! And therefore the second excruciating hour was just as painful! It looked and sounded good don't get me wrong, but it still didn't work. The 20 minutes that followed the second hour were totally unnececary and were only partially rescued by a so-so rendition of "Hey Jude!"- which is my favorite Beatles song. Then it gets hokey and lame and heartfelt and even dumber, mearly reinstating that there was no plot or story to this film except that two people fell in love in the 60's and sort of fought adversity and so on. So here are my sugestions to viewers: if you wnat to see a movie that gives tribute to a band, see "Mamma Mia!" the songs aren't as well written but the movie knew what the hell it was doing! If you want to see a musical that gives a much better snapshot of the 1960s, see "Hairspray", yes it's sugar coated and totally unreal, but I felt that I got the 60's better there than here. And overall if you want to see a colorful, blaring, beautiful musical using pop music and a kick ass love story, see "Moulin Rouge!". This tryed to be that... it was so far from! And it makes me sad that people think this was amazing and have never heard of "Moulin Rouge!"- get educated, especially the ones too young to know better! SKIP THIS MOVIE AND SEE "MAMMA MIA!", "HAIRSPRAY" OR "MOULIN ROUGE!"!!!!!
This was pretty amazing and colorful. This totally reminded me of some the "RockOperas" made in the 80's. Like Tommy and Quadrophenia. Loved the music, but who doesn't like the Beatles? Great performences and great story telling. I loved it!
I love that they could take all those wonderful songs and base a story line on them and it actually works!
Brilliant! Beautiful movie and magnificent rendition of the Beatles songs which are now some of my favorites. Couldn't even tell it was a musical, there was never a disconnect between the acting, singing and lyrics which were all wonderfully tied together.
I hear it has good a Contact Improv dance scene.
I liked these reviews:
"It sounds and looks great but it isn't...."
"sloppy, unfocused and uninteresting characters and ideas along with shades of brilliance"
"As much as Moulin Rouge succeeded by telling a decent cohesive story stringing together random songs, this movie failed miserably. ... Also, we need to stop idolizing the 60s as an era of nostalgic revolution - if you want to change the world, do it now...."
Visually, it was incredible. Very beautiful and artistic. The storyline barely made a point, but I overlooked it just because the signing was amazing and so was the acting. All songs went great with the film (except for Blackbird, which had absolutely NOTHING to do with the scene...), and the message it sends out makes it a great movie to watch if you're the anti-war type. Like I said, the storyline was a piece of crap, but you'll enjoy everything else.
Love/hate relationship with this movie.
It was a very sloppy movie. The editing and plot are kind of random. Especially "Blackbird"- had no relevance to the plot whatsoever. I felt the filmmakers threw in their favorite Beatles tunes and tried to make a movie out of it.
But they all have great voices! Martin Luther had the best voice and my favorite rendition in the film was "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
It sounds and looks great but it isn't when you dig a little deeper.
It may have worked if it had been made in 1972, in the era of trippy rock films - but I doubt it. It isn't even close to films like The Wall or Tommy, which were written as wholly conceived rock operas. As much as Moulin Rouge succeeded by telling a decent cohesive story stringing together random songs, this movie failed miserably. Too many characters of interest, too many disjointed story lines, and overall the story was not compelling. Also, we need to stop idolizing the 60s as an era of nostalgic revolution - if you want to change the world, do it now - we have plenty of problems that still need to be solved. A slight nod to the soundtrack, which has some fine arrangements and performances, but as a film, terrible.
Directed by: Julie Taymor.
Starring: Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther, Eddie Izzard, Bono.
<< "We're in the middle of a revolution Jude. And what are you doing? Doodles and cartoons?"..."Well I'm sorry I'm not the man with the mega-phone, but this is what I do." >>
I really don't know what my final verdict is. Across the Universe is a mish-mash of psychedelic and visually stunning sequences along with over-choreographed, misfired sequences...and sloppy, unfocused and uninteresting characters and ideas along with shades of brilliance in what is said and done. I'm torn for now, but I don't think I'll be seeing it again...at least it has got me wanting to listen to more Beatles songs.
Full review coming soon.
This film was just incredible. The acting, the cast, the music, the train of events all worth the time watching.
One of my favorite movies! Beautifully done by Julie Taymor and her music supervisors, choreographers, and so on. And what an interesting idea to cast almost all unknown people as leads. I did fall in love with Jim Sturgess and Joe Anderson who delivered such performances.
And the music, the music was definately in a league of its own. I have found a new love of the Beatles. The adaptations were to die for and I can honestly say that I cannot pick out a favorite song from this movie!
The cast sang them beautifully and it was great to see those big names rockin it, Bono and Joe Cocker.
The movie takes you back in time to the rebellious 60's period and we get to see Lucy, Max, Jude, Prudence, and the other characters deal and try to blend in to the things that were going on. And while they do we get to hear some of the best music of all time.
Movies like this *can* be good. Admittedly, my favorite movies aren't romantic musicals and I really hate the Beatles, but I went into this with an open mind. The story is constantly being interrupted by the songs, whereas it should flow into it. The cast is stiff and unconvincing, and this movie can't decide if it wants to be normal or "psychadelic". I've concluded that it was merely an excuse to commit several Beatles songs to film.
I don´t like musicals, but i do like the beatles. Love the way they played the songs. See it as a 2-hour music video and you´ll be fine.
The lyrics tell the history and describe a generation. But he love lyrics remain universal. Alucinant, the movie does not need anything else to be great.
AMAZING film, the acting was brilliant, the singing was even better.
I LOVE THE BEATLES
peace and love
biraz izledim ama devam edemicem kendimi kötü hissediyorum böyle (romantik) gençlik filmleri izleyince. biz burada eglenmiyoruz. Anlamsiz komedi filmlerinden baska bisi izlemek istemiyorum.
Pretty good movie with great effects and musical score. Also very good symbolism used. Great musical, definitly worth watching again.
I really enjoyed this movie, and had I been more awake at the time of writing this review I could explain the true greatness of this movie. Save one part (the character Prudence) I love every part of this movie and everything from the animation to the choreography is extremely pleasing to the eye and just a wonderful romantic story. Definitely one of the years best.
This movie was amazing. I loved it. The music in it was beautiful. The Beatles are awesome. My favorite songs in the movie were All My Loving, A Little Help From My Friends, Revolution, Strawberry Feild Forever, Hey Jude, and Across The Universe. These songs were amamzing. Beautiful movie. I will watch it again.
I really find this movie a work of art but some parts are really annoying, although all in all it was a great movie
Being a huge Beatle fan I was really disappointed in this movie. The story is weak and the covers of the songs are not as good as the originals. I would stay this film is a failed interesting idea.
Astounding soundtrack, exceptional art direction and costume design. The problem lies with how they utilized the songs. Not everyone made good renditions, and the musical numbers just won't find a place in the story, making the plot sound silly as ever.
Some of the songs aren't as friendly to the originals as they should be, but it's understandable that they took liberties. The story isn't really anything new, but the visuals are amazing. The whole film is a work of art, really.

I LOOOOOOOOOOVED This movie and i like their twist on the beatles music they did, the voices and music are so much better than the how the original beatles did it. no matter what other ppl. might say. it's inspirational even cause of the time period and what was going on and now whats going its good!!
This movie is amazing...... One of the best movies I've ever seen...... I totally recomend it
i liked the beatles songs more than the movie. the movie is a little bit weird.
i have an obsession with this movie
it's beautiful, exlilerateing and fun i've seen it 5 times!!!!
i wish the filmmakers and actors had 1% of what made the beatles great. but dumb kids who don't actually understand beatles music are sure to love this cash machine with the beatles name pressed so neatly on the cover
it is the one of the most beatiful movies i have seen and it is so romantic and the beatles make this film amazing to see again and again!!!!!!
I've been listening to the beatles since I was born, and to me this movie has great performances, good choice of vocals and the scenes are very moving. I loved it.
The best fuckin movie of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can not get enough of it!
"NOT a musical.. NOT a movie" This whole whatever it was.. was everywhere and to me didn't make a lot of sense. The only part I did like and the song was "Let It Be". Don't get me wrong I do like the Beatles but thats all this film had to offer. It was very artsy in most parts and it was like watching songs being reborn into film. The scenes themselves did not follow through or have a pattern with the characters. The whole of the movie was one big Beatles tribute. I was sadden for this film because I actually thought it would be enjoyable. 2 stars
