Plot:
"Are you free tonight?" A simple enough question, but how Jonathan McQuarry answers it will change his life forever. A corporate auditor adrift in a sea of New York's power elite, Jonathan's work is ...( read more

its not so much thrilling .. but the plot pretty decent as some parts are unpredictable .. its quite entertaining and Jackman plays well ..
The first half is all about sex, Ewan McGregor and Michelle Wiliams. Hot.
The last half reveals twists and turns etc and is quite entertaining. B-grade, but still good.
Very disappointing.
Boring characters and an unoriginal story combine to give you deception; a film that looks good on the outside- but is a complete mess on the inside.
Not even Jackman or McGregor could save this....and perhaps that was the problem- the fact that the film relied heavily on the stars to show audiences the non-exsistent potential.
Take two amazing actors like Ewan Mcgregor and Hugh Jackman and put them together and you have great potential for a film. This one started off interesting, and the pace quickened, and as it didn the plot grew thicker and more twisted and interesting. But then sadly, it got lost somehow, and the momentum it had was all but gone, and it appeared like many predictable thrillers. This was much like the film Derailed, only not nearly as well written. Mcgregor did a good job but it felt as if Jackmans unbelivable acting abilities were kind of subsided by this one. There were sometwists and erotic subtleties, but this one comes across as your average thriller, with an unsatisfying finish, that was kept afloat by a good cast.
With this movie sex and intrigue?? An accountant is introduced to a mysterious sex club known as The List by his lawyer friend. But in this new world, he soon becomes the prime suspect in a woman's disappearance and a multi-million dollar heist. This movie is interesting with a huge twist at the end but not interesting enough; it could have been so much better.
it was fine...me and my frnd was supposed to watch a hoorror film but then fe chose this and well..it was just fine...hehehehe.....
Not the greatest movie - see the Jennifer Aniston flick Derailed for a better version. I still love Ewan even though he has a crap accent in this.
It was ok, i mean if you like to see Mcgregor getting HIV you will love this movie hahaha, kidding, honestly it wasnt original, and the great acting of Hugh Jackman was totaly wasted.
It's opening makes me feel it will like Eyes Wide Shut; the middle sounds like Secret Window; then it becomes a traditional thriller, with a twisted plot development.
A good but predictable movie; a drama than a thriller.
Ewan vs. Hugh? Some serious actors in this movie made justice to the story.
The combination of Jackman and McGregor made this movie unique with all the suspense, drama and...... the only thing needed to see it one bowl of popcorn and enjoy it of course!!!!!
It was definitely a good movie. On a scale of 1 to 10 it obviously takes and 8. BUT! I thought this was going to kill me. I thought this movie was going to be the reason of my existence for the following week. Shamefully it isn't, I got out of the theater with a wah wah wah sing-songy feeling in my head. The performances are awesome. Ewan McGregor is always good. Michelle Williams impresses me more and more every time. And Hugh Jackman is absolutely PHENOMENAL! The three of them gave everything here, and the characters were definitely well-written and developed. There was so much background on the three of them that made it absolutely delicious to think about them. Jackman's was definitely my favorite, I always like the bad guy and he was perfect for it. My problem was the development of it all, for starters it was a little slow and lets be honest, thrillers shouldn't be because the lose themselves. Finally, the ending, I mean the guy died! There was no point whatsoever on him dying! and then the other two left the money, are they dumb or what!?! The ending was definitely forced, like while writing the writers couldn't think on a way to end it and therefore put the most obvious thing ever, he dies with the name of the other and the other two stay together and live happily ever after... wah wah wah... though definitely a good movie, I was dissapointed.
A disappointing film with low expectations.
I saw a trailer for this film a while ago and it looked quite good, but after actually seeing it I can say that it isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Deception is a story about a boring accountant (McGregor) who accidentally picks up his new friend/employee's phone (Jackman) and gets a phone call from a woman asking him if "he is free tonight?". It turns out that his friend did it on purpose in order to introduce him to a private sex club. The accountant begins to enjoy the opportunities, until he begins to suspect that he may be being set up for something...
In fairness, Deception isn't all that bad for people who like thrillers, but it just has too many problems for me.
Lets start with Ewan McGregor. I usually like the characters that Ewan Mcgregor portrays, but with this character I just couldn't sympathies with him at all. The character is such a stereotypical nerd/geek account that it is very hard to care about him which is a shame.
Hugh Jackman is good however. It's really good to see him play someone totally different to Wolverine. He's probably the star performer in this.
The main thing I noticed about Deception, and what really destroyed the film for me, was the way tension was built up and the way music was used to emphasize it. Because the scenes that were supposed to be filled with tension were not actually all that engrossing, music had clearly been over-used to really emphasize the tension. The result was just laughable. It would have probably been better to not use any music in those scenes.
Overall, Deception is a disappointing thriller, but if you really like thrillers or you like Hugh Jackman and you want to see him play someone very different to Wolverine, then you may want to watch it.
Well its name decribes it all. Deception. Without giving too much away it has a twist at every turn...what you believe is the truth is turned upside down.he double crosses of the double crosses were awesome with a very intricate storyline. It's a very interesting movie, and is a lot different to the movies I normally see, which to me is a fresh experience.4/5!
If you're planning on seing it...see it.
I was really looking forward to this film, with such a strong cast and seemingly strong plot I thought it was locked. It was ok.It was great to see Michelle Williams,I figured with her and Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman they could have had much more intense sex scenes,I ain't gonna bullshit cha thats what I was hoping for.Anyway didn't happen. They really could have made this one alot better.WAIT FOR DVD.
hmmm.... sex and intrigue?? An accountant is introduced to a mysterious sex club known as The List by his lawyer friend. But in this new world, he soon becomes the prime suspect in a woman's disappearance and a multi-million dollar heist. "Are you free tonight??" if so this movie is interesting but not interesting enough; it could have been so much better.
Not as good as I had hoped it would be. The trailers made it look a lot more of a "dark" picture, then it really was.
Exciting plot line and cast. The film rounded was extremely entertaining and gave me chills through out.
I liked the idea, and the cinematography was interesting. Great acting with a couple of semi-predictable plot points. Loved Hugh Jackman. Creepy and insanely sexy. If you want a hot movie, this is it.
I felt it was alright though I liked how the end, ended up but i kinda predicted that after watching the explosion.
I think that the plot is original but I hope the ending doesn't blows it...want to see also the chemenstry between ewan and hugh
5.9/10
Have you ever longed for a bit more excitement in your life? Many of us have. Especially, it seems, introverted and slightly nerdy Jonathan McQuarry, an audit manager played by Ewan McGregor.
McGregor is a high flyer, checking the books for top Wall Street firms. There's only one problem. He doesn't have a life. Zero social world, and near zero sexual escapades to look back with his mates. Assuming he had any. Which he doesn't. Accountants are wary of him for the few weeks when he looks at their figures. And to everyone else he's just a temporary fixture.
Until smoothly tailored Wyatt Bose breezes onto the scene. A spliff, a game of tennis, and an accidental swapping of mobile phone handsets puts McQuarry in line for more sex, deception and perilous living than Little Red Riding Hood in heat checking out the bear pit.
In the opening scene, McQuarry is alone in a majestic Manhattan skyscraper, only the cleaners in the background (behind glass doors). The camera traverses the splendid skylines. All is framed to perfection, both visually and to establish the characters and storyline. So when the plot moves into Basic Instinct territory, you are not surprised to see lovers pictured in postcard perfection. Standing in the rain. Or having is sex in those geometrically interesting positions. And lighting that just happens to show off their lovely skin tones and delicately arranged shadows.
Director of photography Dante Spinotti (The Insider, L.A. Confidential, Heat) uses a high-tech Panavision Genesis digital video camera for the night scenes, capturing colours and detail in a way where film falls short. "The Genesis has a much stronger sensitivity," Spinotti explains, "so it can read in the shadows much more than film does." I spent much time admiring the photography. It was more interesting than the story. Shifting dodgy funds about electronically is hardly visceral viewing. So we have a mysterious sex-club that McQuarry stumbles into. He meets high-profile women whose lives are too busy for relationships.
Queue meaningless sex. No names. No work talk. The initiator, male or female, pays the hotel. The only important words being, "Are you free tonight?" McQuarry is emotionally attracted in one encounter ? against the rules. Her name begins with S. She's blonde, leggy, and played by Michelle Willliams (Brokeback Mountain, She's Not There). Soon the games begin, and you won't be surprised to learn they include blackmail and large amounts of moola.
To give Deception its due, the intrigue does develop in ways I hadn't expected. I just wish I could have cared enough about the characters to ignore the plot holes and lack of any real depth or substance. As a thriller, a piece of soft porn, or a character study, Deception is room temperature. Luscious visuals are poor compensation for a contrived and unengrossing story. It passes the time well enough and makes a competent debut feature for director Marcel Langenegger, but Spinotti needs worthier projects and McGregor and Williams need to show that they are serious about acting.
Some of the best lines used the f-word ? so well suited to McGregor's well-modulated and slightly posh voice (when he can maybe seem almost like a more buff version of the very proper Hugh Grant). He sadly he doesn't get to say them, but his co-stars do.
Deception makes for a pleasantly titillating hour and a half but, much like a drunken one-night stand, it would be silly to take it too seriously.
Great cast and plot. Jonathan (Ewan) is an auditor who wants a more exciting and fulfilling life. He meets Wyatt (Hugh) a conman who befriends Jonathan and introduces him to the high life. Things turn nasty when Wyatt threatens to kill Jonathan's crush (Michelle) unless he helps him steal 20 million dollars. The pace is good throughout the movie but the ending did not live up to the rest of the movie.
The acting is top notch in this slinky thriller. What starts out as a seemingly innocent mix up turns into a liberating sexual experience... until things go horribly wrong... that goes double for the last 20 minutes of this movie, which becomes completely unbelievable. (spoiler alert!) how the heck did an accountant with no friends suddenly get a fake passport? How come you can shoot someone in a park, across from a bank, in broad daylight and not have the cops come? Why would you just leave 20 million in cash and walk away, in a foreign country without a way home and under an assumed name... your past life and any schooling is basically flushed... how are you going to live... wait tables? Someone shot the writers before they finished this story and then just made up some poor excuse for an ending. Rent it if only to see how hot the cast is.
